Lost Outlook Express.

Yesterday I allowed an update through from Microsoft.

It was for Microsoft Office and after it was downloaded and installed, I restarted my computer.

After the restart, there in the bottom right hand corner, was a shortcut to Microsoft Outlook mail program.

I have always used Outlook Express, because I find it easy to use and I'm used to it.

Microsoft Outlook's set up I don't really care for and would like to reinstall Outlook Express.

Is it possible to have OE back?

I heard somewhere that Microsoft are doing away with OE?

I looked in my programs and files but still cannot find OE anywhere. It just disappeared!

Do a system restore to a date before that last update.
I would suggest taking your machine off MS automatic updates and do it manually. Ask to be notified. Then do them as necessary

Gene, doing a Systems Restore brought it back. Thank you.

It removed the installed update, which was Office XP service pack 3 containing, Microsoft Outlook 2002 and other things.

Now the little yellow [updates waiting to be installed] icon, sits in the notification tray, like a lost soul waiting for me to allow the update in!

Is there anyway I can install the Office XP service pack 3 and still keep Outlook Express on my computer?
I already had/have Microsoft Outlook in my computer, [before these updates arrived] if I wanted to switch to it.
But as I said before, I'm quite happy with OE!

With MS Office 2007 or 2000 just open Outlook and the setup window appears. Probably the same for other versions. Follow along and at some point you will probably be asked if you wish to make Outlook your default mail handler.

It should not be an issue then. However, if you would like to learn about the feature check the the hide box and select the customize button>Apply>OK. Be sure to uncheck and the follow up clicks to return to your previous settings. It's really easy and can clean up a crowded Taskbar/Notification Area. DA

gmom, Here is the link that is most likely to save your day: www.OEHelp.com/OETips Scroll down to the red 'Update'. Have a read, but before you do anything else, download the free programme Outlook Express Quick Backup (don't worry about the command line instructions because you never use them - you just push the buttons). Before you run OE Quick Backup create a new Backup Folder (preferably on another drive) e.g. 'Current'. Run OE Quick Backup and select the 'Current' folder then click 'Backup All'. Once your latest data is safely backed up in 'Current' create a couple more folders e.g. 'Old 2008' and 'Old 2007'. This is because, if things work o.k., you are likely to end up with several .dbx files with the same name and you need to save them in different places - as explained in the next paragraph. So, to recover e.g. an old "Sent" email folder copy sent.bak and save it to your current identity as sent1.dbx and then backup that to "Old 2008". A quick word about .bak files - when Widows saves a later version of any file with the same name as the original one it changes the extension of the original file to .bak e.g. text.txt to text.bak and program.exe to program.bak. This gives you only one chance to 'easily' recover your data because if you save again using the same name then the first .bak file is overwritten - this is windows way of preventing your hard drive from becoming full with obsolete files. N.B. My Windows theory might not be 100% correct (I am both old and self-taught!) but the general principles are about right and it could save you from corrupting anything that you do manage to recover. I Want to Save a Folder I Have in Outlook Express

Try searching for 'Outlook Express Tutorials'. I don't have time right now to read it. Last summer my OE crashed and I lost EVERYTHING in it. Now I have a folder on my desktop labeled 'email'. I highlight whatever I want to save , go up to 'file', 'save as' and browse to the email folder and click 'save'. Time consuming and there may be a better way but I haven't found it yet.

I have Outlook Express and Service Pack 3 but I didn't have
your problem. I can't say why your having it.
For future information here is were O.E. files are kept.

The easiest way to locate Outlook Express' email store is to ask Outlook Express. Open it up, and then in Tools, Options, on the Maintenance tab there's a button labeled Store Folder. Click that and it will tell you the folder containing your email folder.
Highlight the address and right click it and left click copy.
Start - Run - Paste in the address - click OK

Do you happen to have MS Office on your computer????
If so, then I believe the update is putting MS Outlook as the default email client.

Is it possible that you just lost your quick launch icon rather than the program? Did you look in the Programs list?

I have XP and Office 2000 and use Outlook with one of my email addresses (work one) and I use OE for the other five email addresses.

I had no problems at all when I downloaded SP3, I didn't even know that there were problems with it until long after I had installed it.

The up-date was OFFICE XP Service Pack3 for Microsoft Office, not Windows XP Service Pack 3

Anyway the situation has gone from bad to worse!

I did a system restore and OE came back [that's good!]

The Office service pack 3 up-date I had install two days before was no longer there, after the restore and a new up-date message came through for it. It will not install because it says there is a file [Proplus.MSI] missing or corrupted!!! Yet it install two days before without a hitch!!!??? Other than taking my OE out!

The only way now, I believe, to cure this missing or corrupted file situation, is to re-install Microsoft Office or at least do a repair from the MS Office CD, which unfortunately, I do not have....[ and that's bad!]

So at present I'm just ignoring that PITA little yellow icon that is sitting waiting in the notification tray, until I come up with the required CD! LOL
