Currently using XP--Should I but and use 7?

My Dell desktop uses XP and my Tosiba laptop, which I now never use has Vista. I wasn't crazy about Vista but I did adjust. When I got my netbook, 7 was new and people said awful things about it, so I got a Toshiba netbook with XP. I use the netbook only when on trips and vacations and my laptop is there simply for a backup. I occasionally fire up the laptop just to get current updates. I wonder if 7 is now stable and is it time I upgrade to it. I understand XP will, if it hasn't already happened, lose Microsoft's support. Do I need 7 now?

If you feel rich update.
Otherwise keep what you have updated & be happy for free.

When you start discovering you cant install some new program because it requires vista or higher.. then consider moving to win7.

A year from now it will be Win8. So why rush to 7, unless you have a valid reason to do so.

my opinion anyhow. Win7 is the best of the bunch.. but if you dont need it Win8 is being tested by lots of people now.

I like the Jiffy 7's too. They always work well for me. For the average Joe who is not starting hundreds of plants these work extremely well in my opinion. Virtually no mess, no cleanup. I use the sprayer from the kitchen sink to fill the tray part way, go through my seed packs and decide which ones to grow, come back 5-10 minutes later and they are popped-up, ready to go. I learned the hard way, if it doesn't say JIFFY, it's not! By mistake, picked up another similarly packaged system a couple years ago, with horrible results. Don't recall the brand, think I got them at Walmart. Once the pellets were fluffed, they reminded me more of sawdust and less like starter mix. The germination rate was abysmal. The Jiffy pellets are always 100% germination...or darn close.

How do I force W7 to use my selected driver?

Well, this will not resolve for me, so I come back just in case there's a answer - seems the answer is "no" not with W7 64 bit.. maybe the history of new MS OS release is a gradual increase in the number of updated applications/drivers. My circular problem is the IR driver W7 installed on its "own", straight plug and play did work some, at least I was able to load the DT on W7 from my Hand Held. So I figured go back to the IR device mfg and see what they had to offer. After loading that driver I found the IR completely no-op, never made even a connection. So, I uninstalled the mfg driver and went back to have W7 PnP get me back to the sometimes work...but this time I did note the driver identification. Well, PnP loaded the same driver. On the face of it this is good news, PnP was able to fine the mfg's driver. But, as I don't know what was there in the beginning, I assume the earlier/first driver load was not the mfg as the device partially worked. Is it possible that since I downloaded the mfg drive the W7 installer is able to find it on my HDD? I did a W7 Control Pannel uninstall and I checked the file system and found the associated files that I knew of were gone.

Can I use a 7-1/4 in. blade in a 7-1/2 in. circular saw?

I do this all the time with my table saw and radial arm saw. They will take a 10 inch blade but if I run a 7 1/4 inch blade or an 8 inch blade the saw doesn't have to work as hard. Especially helpful when going thru very hard thick material. Pooh Bear

What size pendants should I use over a 7' 6" island?

There is a formula it goes something like this: Measure the length of your island/table in inches. Example: 60" wide Determine how many pendants you want and the diameter of each. Add them up for a combined diameter. Example: 3 pendants with an 8" diameter. Combined = 24" Subtract the combined diameter from the length of the island. Example: 60" - 24"= 36" Add 1 to the number of pendants. (This accounts for the space between each pendant and the ends of the island) Example: Since its 3 pendants, this number will be 4. Divide your subtracted value by the number of pendants. Example: 36" ÷ 4 = 9". You’ll want about 9" of space in between each pendant.

WinXP support doesn't end until 2014. I don't plan to change until then.

that is xpSP3 support does not end until 2014 if on SP2 it has ended already.

If you have one with Vista have you done both service pack updates to your Vista? That made a huge difference in Vista and made it much more like 7. Vista and 7 are quite similar.

If they are all working fine and doing the job you need them to do then just stick with it till there is a real need to move up. Just be sure to keep not only windows updated but all the other things like flash, java, adobe etc those can leave you very open to infection if not kept updated. Using the secunia tool can help with that.

on any unit that is not left on you run the risk of having an antivirus program that is way behind on it's definitions, that is why it is really much better to leave it on daily enough to allow those to install so that when you do turn on the pc it is not opening without the most current protection in place.

Since you brought up the thought of whether or not to purchase a new system, if you are financially able and comfortable to purchase a W7 then do so. With XP you are two generations of O/S behind already, and if you waited for W8 you would be three.
