Currently using XP--Should I but and use 7?

My Dell desktop uses XP and my Tosiba laptop, which I now never use has Vista. I wasn't crazy about Vista but I did adjust. When I got my netbook, 7 was new and people said awful things about it, so I got a Toshiba netbook with XP. I use the netbook only when on trips and vacations and my laptop is there simply for a backup. I occasionally fire up the laptop just to get current updates. I wonder if 7 is now stable and is it time I upgrade to it. I understand XP will, if it hasn't already happened, lose Microsoft's support. Do I need 7 now?

If you feel rich update.
Otherwise keep what you have updated & be happy for free.

When you start discovering you cant install some new program because it requires vista or higher.. then consider moving to win7.

A year from now it will be Win8. So why rush to 7, unless you have a valid reason to do so.

my opinion anyhow. Win7 is the best of the bunch.. but if you dont need it Win8 is being tested by lots of people now.

I have never used rockdust but I was curious about your question so I Googled it. It is milled volcanic rock quarried in Scotland. It is advertised as 'helping with poor acidic soils' which are pretty rare in UK gardens anywhere, and very unlikely in SE England. But you say you don't want to be told you don't need it, so I will refrain. Just going by what the manufacturers say, you shouldn't add lime as well as rockdust. Not because rockdust will raise the pH but because lime will 'lock up' the minerals in the rockdust. The application rate recommended by the manufacturers (and they presumably will be trying to get you to use as much as possible) is 1/2 kg per sq metre, so your 2 - 3 kg psm looks like way too much. I am just curious as to whether you have had your allotment for very long. Have you had disappointing yields in the past or are you trying to preempt hypothetical problems? If the latter maybe a year of growing in the conditions as they are will help form a picture of what your soil might or might not need. Regarding your other post about lime and clubroot. Does your plot definitely have clubroot or are you just anticipating that it might be a problem? The allotment site where I have my plot does not have clubroot. It is not inevitable. If your land does not have it already and you grow your own brassicas from seed you may never experience it. pnbrown - yes there is greensand in the UK.

Can I use a 7-1/4 in. blade in a 7-1/2 in. circular saw?

I do this all the time with my table saw and radial arm saw. They will take a 10 inch blade but if I run a 7 1/4 inch blade or an 8 inch blade the saw doesn't have to work as hard. Especially helpful when going thru very hard thick material. Pooh Bear

One needs to be careful where one exchanges currency. Some time ago a young person who'd spent time in western Canada and then lived in the southwestern U.S. (TX, OK, etc. I think) had an aunt die in Canada, leaving her 20 - 30 thousand dollars from her estate. When the lawyer sent the cheque, in Candian dollars (which was what the bequest had been), when she took it to a bank in her area, they wanted something over $1,000. as an exchange fee, I think ... she came on here asking what to do. I think that many smaller banks, unfamiliar with such activities, are unfamiliar with how to do it efficiently. I told her to send it back to the major Canadian city where she'd lived, where they do that all the time and where they knew her (for ease of dealing with the cheque, not related to the exchange aspect of the situation), that they'd give her appropriate exchange, usually about 1% (or less for larger amounts). She did, and paid a low fee. (I told her that she owed me a dinner, some time when we got together). Her husband had been U.S. military, I think. The more that one knows about money, the more effectively that one can use it. During a number of years as a personal finacial advisor, I've said to a great number of people that learning how money works is an interesting hobby ... and it pays well. A local guy, authour of a book, "Financial Freedom without Sacrifice", has said for years that they should teach kids in school how to manage money. I copied the photo of your rug to my photo program and sampled the colors in it. I then compared those colors with paint colors from Benjamin Moore and Sherwin-Williams. The light gold of the background most closely matches SW 6374 Torchlight. The light brown was similar to BM's 2166-20 Caramel Latte. The green matched SW 7729 Edamame, and SW 2806 Rookwood Brown is similar to a taupe in the rug. Neither the coral or the dark red have any matches, and they would overwhelm a room in any event. What looked blue in the rug sampled as gray. These colors in your rug are muted by the small areas they occupy. They are more saturated when viewed by themselves. Below are approximate samples of the above colors. You should first of all check out these colors on the manufacturer's website in their virtual paint. Here is Benjamin Moore and here is Sherwin-Williams. Remember that you can choose a lighter version of these colors. For instance, SW 7726 Lemon Verbena is a lighter version of Edamame, and SW 6373 Harvester is a lighter version of Torchlight. Once you have narrowed the choices you should buy samples and paint on poster board. You can then set the poster boards against the walls you want to paint to see how the colors work. This is the only way to see if you like the colors enough to live with them. Otherwise you would be better off choosing neutrals.

WinXP support doesn't end until 2014. I don't plan to change until then.

that is xpSP3 support does not end until 2014 if on SP2 it has ended already.

If you have one with Vista have you done both service pack updates to your Vista? That made a huge difference in Vista and made it much more like 7. Vista and 7 are quite similar.

If they are all working fine and doing the job you need them to do then just stick with it till there is a real need to move up. Just be sure to keep not only windows updated but all the other things like flash, java, adobe etc those can leave you very open to infection if not kept updated. Using the secunia tool can help with that.

on any unit that is not left on you run the risk of having an antivirus program that is way behind on it's definitions, that is why it is really much better to leave it on daily enough to allow those to install so that when you do turn on the pc it is not opening without the most current protection in place.

Since you brought up the thought of whether or not to purchase a new system, if you are financially able and comfortable to purchase a W7 then do so. With XP you are two generations of O/S behind already, and if you waited for W8 you would be three.
