Adding Memory

Need help adding memory to an HP Pavilion Mod 8565C Desktop,

trying to help a friend who lost the technical instruction manual that came with the system, so I need info that gives the ram values and options and any pertinent info for upgrading, the system presently has only 96 MB sdram. The friend is on a very limited income and really needs to update the complete system but is unable to do so.

you can run this free tool and it will give you the info on exactly what is in your pc

but he can always go right to the HP site and search his model number to get all the manuals and the info and specific directions with pictures of his pc

Upgrading Memory (RAM)

I hate to say this but that is a very old pc and likely it can not take much ram and what it can take it really would be a waste to even spend that much money on that old of a pc. He could buy a used newer pc instead, that pc is just not worth it. I have personally bought some great computers on craigslist for very good prices. Or maybe he can get someone to build one for him out of used parts.

Max it can take is 384 MB (3 x 128 MB DIMM)

I would try to find some used RAM, many shops that repair and build computers might have some of that older RAM laying around, check locally for used computer parts.

I made a mistake in my earlier post and divided everything by 1024. I should have said 1 gig and 256 meg. If I were you, I'd try narrowing things down. I would first take out the original RAM and put the new modules where the original modules were. See how much RAM is reported. Also see if it reports the speed. If that shows 2 gig of ram, then the new modules are the right size. If it shows 512 meg, then the new modules are 256 meg modules instead of 1 gig modules. Then, try putting the original modules in the slots where you currently have the new modules. See what is reported when you have it in that way.

Added RAM..now pc not working

Actually I now have a new problem. I pulled out my original memory card (that had not been touched) and reinserted it. I left out the new card. That seemed to do the trick as far as the beeps go. Machine started up with no beeps...HOWEVER....now I have no monitor. Nothing. Nada. I even tried my old monitor and nothing. On my emachine, there is a light on the front that flashes when the pc is off, but the monitor is on. When you turn on the pc, the flashing light goes solid. It doesn't go solid now. Just keeps flashing as if the pc is not on. Why WHY did I mess with my pc????

I wound all the bills and the "memories" around a toilet paper roll, put this in a box and wrapped the box real pretty. Had a slit cut in the top where the pulled the money out. I really don't think they paid that much attention to the money after they read the first memory. I think they were just looking for the next memory. It was def. a hit.
