getting 'not responding' losing my sites :(

Lately I have been getting alot of 'not responding', with the 'end now' captions.

I have been searching for furniture/tv's, so I frequently have more than one program going, so I can compare products. Of course everything is shut down, and I have to get everything back online.

I have a scan run every 12pm.

What may be causing this?

I think you mean that you have more than one browser window open, right? I'll need more information, which browser? (Internet Explorer, Firefox, Safari or something else)What type of internet connection do you have? (DSL, cable, satellite, dial up or something else) Is your scan running during the time you are browsing? I have mixed, but usually slow results from shopping online...the websites are usually much slower than my normal connection. Are you allowing some extra time for websites to open before clicking on the next item? Do you get any errors from your browser? How long since you cleared cache and cookies?

This is not going to be a black and white answer since there are multiple variables.

Yes- it is browsers that are open. I have satellite, win xp. No, the scan runs at a time when I am not on the computer.
It is not that I don't allow enough time for the result to load, it is that after I click on a site- (it doesn't have to be just a shopping site- it is all kinds of sites), a small window will pop up saying 'the program is not responding'. Or a small window that says- 'end now' and another comment that I forgot. Then, without me clicking anything, the computer 'turns off'- not completely, but to where I only have my 'start' and programs on the left side of the page, ie IE, Yahoo Mail, Reader, etc.

Hi folks, as I actually started the GW Adenium forum in April 2012 I certainly hope it's already helped a lot of growers (me included as that was my main reason for instigating it!). So, I feel a need to respond to the above in some way :) Chris705743 sorry you seem 'very disappointed', and Gessieviolet I apologise for you being 'very discouraged', but, it happens. That said, Chris, I have searched GW (not just this forum, but GW as a whole) for your posts of 26&27 Nov...and they do not appear anywhere?? As already pointed out by respected member Rick, it's a quiet time of the year on many forums and especially here as our plants 'tend' to go dormant...like us members. Work, celebrations for some, and life get in the way. After all, the help, time and advise given is all voluntary as you are no doubt aware. As for posts of newcomers not being answered immediately, I'm sure you realise that isn't intentionally the case :) Global time differences can add to time delays in some cases (I note you are from Malaysia...KL is some 13hrs ahead of New York!) Posts are answered by those who have the spare time to actually be on the site at any given time or by whoever choses to reply, for whatever reason. Response rate/number of replies can even be dictated by the wording in the subject matter, and also by how the actual post is worded...we do like a 'please' or a 'thank you' :) Even those with subjects titles that crop up (very) regularly are answered with courtesy. ..despite there being a search facility giving lots of past info. Hi again Carol, How gratifying to hear your report of how things are going for you and family. Speaking of family - I hope that yours became accustomed to your upgraded situation without too much distress. Interesting, isn't it, how people get used to seeing others (and themselves?) in sort of a rut, following a familiar path? Sometimes I wonder whether some of the partially/slightly negative attention that they pay to someone else's changing course may have some connection with their unhappiness with their present situation, possibly having some inner desire to do something similar, but being rather unwilling to give that desire house-room, whether from inertia (? - I thought that there was a more precise word, called son, but this is the best that we can think of at the moment), fear or whatever motive. I'm pleased that you're finding some success in the field that you've chosen to pursue, and hope that it proceeds apace. Son and I attended a networking project called "The Beehive" last year that's rather different and enables one to meet a number of folks who might be able to offer mutual support/business contact/development possibilities. I heard of it through an economic development council that I've been connected to in our area and took son to one of their initial local meetings. Actually, it was while I was taking son home from their first meeting that I attended that my car got smacked! They divide a number of people in a room into several groups of about 4 each. They pass out a business envelope to each participant, with a card inside. Each person becomes a "Queen Bee", writing some question relating to an idea that they'd like to develop their business around. For me, a financial planner, instead of writing, "Would you like to pay less income tax?" (which would focus on the hearer[s] only), they encourage me to write, "Do you know someone who would like to pay less income tax?" (asking the hearer to think whether they may know of someone in that situation, in addition to themselves). Another member of the small group becomes the "worker bee", and when the round begins, starts by asking the question in her/his own group. If someone knows of a person who might be interested, s/he gives her/his business card to the worker bee. The worker bee takes that Queen Bee's question around to each of the other groups in turn, asking the question. If someone there knows of someone that might be interested, they hand their business card to the worker bee and the worker bee departs, to visit another "hive". They get some hype and speed worked into the situation, each flying worker wondering whether they've been to this or that hive yet, and when a worker bee has finished in a hive and departed, the members of that hive put up their hands and shout, "Over here! Over here!" to attract another worker bee. When each worker bee has visited every hive, they all gather around the coordinator and each reads her/his question in turn, with the other worker bees handing over their own cards if they are interested in that question. Then each worker returns to his/her own hive and hands the question card with the group of cards that s/he gathered to the "Queen Bee" who wrote the question. They usually run four rounds, if there were four members in each "hive" - so everyone gets to be "Queen" once, and "worker" once. They usually run four rounds - which means that each person puts four questions of interest to each participant in the meeting that night. Each participant usually goes home with a fistful of pre-qualified cards in her/his sweaty little hand. The recipient of the cards then contacts the owner of each card received to ask for the contact. This avoids the pressure of the person contacted being put on the spot. I think that several friendships are developed that way, in additon to there being an ongoing live contact. If one of the other members who gave me his card and meets someone a while later who might be interested, s/he might give my name to that person, or tell me about the person's possible interest. I've offered a "Christmas gift" to folks here on the "Finance" and "KT" forums, plus here for several years now, a gift that should save them hundreds, maybe thousands, in their lifetime, in addition to keeping former friendships warm. Write the names of everyone you've known since childhood, with contact info, then, over time, add items that relate to them - training, profession, interests, hobbies, vacation destinations, etc. When you want to know something - ask the folks on your database. As time goes along, if you develop some items of interest to several of them, you might begin a sort of newsletter to send to all or a portion. As people become familiar with what you're doing, they may contact you when they have a question, etc. If you can be helpful in such a situation, that guy owes you one, right? Isn't that rather shameful - offering the same (no direct cost) "Christmas gift" to the same people, over and over?! I guess if one's as frugal as I, there are some things about which it gets rather hard to shame them! Well - I didn't do it last Christmas, at least. Karen, if your family is anything like mine, until you lost your Dad, you hadn't seen a lot of loss or grief for someone. It's hard to watch it (and experience it!) I think I'd probably just call my Mom, if I were you, and ask her to your house to eat, to go out, to watch activities that the kids are involved in, etc. Let her know that it's okay to not be in the mood to do anything. Also let her know that you really WANT her to be involved in whatever your family is doing. My Mom has spent the night at my house two nights since my Dad passed away. Get this, I had to break my ankle and have surgery in order to get her to do that! LOL I kid her that having surgery is the only way she'll stay at my house overnight! LOL We live 80 miles apart and I call her everyday - usually twice a day. We've talked more by phone in the last four years than we'd ever talked in our lives. My DH and I and our kids and grandkids make it a point to at least spend part of every holiday at her house. She likes to stay home, so we go to her. I DO feel sometimes at her house, when everyone is there but Daddy, that there's the proverbial "big gray elephant" in the house that no one mentions. You know what I mean? Everybody is highly aware of the fact that he's no longer with us, but nobody wants to talk about it for fear of upsetting somebody else! Now, when it's just my Mom and me together, we cry (and laugh!) when we feel the need to. That's something else that I haven't thought to mention. Let her cry when she feels the need to cry. I guess you don't have to say a word, just be there for her. She and I both have talked about the fact that Fathers are the HEAD of most families. Then, as women, we both agree that the Mothers are the HEART of the family. Maybe you can reassure her in that way that she IS a vital, needed part. ((Karen))

I had a hard time finding a GC too, although I didn't have trouble getting them to come out. I live in a neighborhood where older houses are routinely torn down and remodels are all of the granite-stainless-dovetail variety, so I was already outside the box for wanting to leave the walls up and not use granite. Wanting to use Ikea cabinets didn't help me, GC-wise (I think it screams "cheap homeowner"). I had already decided on them partly because of budget, sure, but also because I really wanted frameless Euro-style cabs with good soft-close slides, and those were the only ones I could find locally. Of course it's fine for GC's to want to work only with a specific cabinet manufacturer, and I appreciated it when they told me so straight out; but these are the things I heard from other GC's who came to the house: 1. Ikea cabinets are junk. I got this from most all of them except for the one who had actually used an Ikea kitchen. 2. I was crazy for expecting the electrical work to cost more than the countertops. This was after I explained that I had already priced out my favorite butcherblock countertops at $500 and that our 1949 house would need a total kitchen rewiring. 3. Instead of using the layout I'd decided on, I should take out a major load-bearing wall that included a fireplace. 4. Instead of using the layout I'd decided on, I should expand the kitchen onto the back porch, which would have involved taking down two walls that were originally the outside walls (and a corner) of the house. Never mind that the back porch, which was tacked onto the house by another homeowner decades ago, has a sloping floor and 10 windows that are all lower than countertop height. 5. There wasn't really anything wrong with the existing 1980's kitchen. (I heard this from my husband too, lol. It looked OK as long as you didn't need to cook.) 6. We don't generally work on jobs under $50K. -- This was actually my favorite GC of the lot, and I don't know how we didn't figure this out on the phone before he came to the house. Maybe he had a scheduler taking his calls. Anyway, he understood exactly what I wanted to do, and he was courteous and professional. I didn't keep him long so he could move on to a real job, but if we had been planning a bigger remodel, I would have been happy to hire him. And no, I did not try to talk him into doing a remodel for half his usual cost. So I ended up GC'ing it myself, with the help of some wonderful subs who were prompt and also courteous and professional. The electrician stories in this thread make me smile. I finally got a quote from ours after I saw him having lunch in the same restaurant where I was and went over to his table to ask him how much longer he thought it'd be. Poor fellow, talk about a deer-in-the-headlights look. :) I had already seen the great reviews he'd gotten from other women on my online mom's board, and I have partly paid him back by recommending him many times myself. I do not know much about satellite internet but perhaps the provider is over subscribed causing some of your grief. You never stated who your carrier is. Assume they take on 20% more customers than the system will carry efficiently you can see the downloads will be very slow due to sharing the available signal in busy times.

Have you tried different times of the day to see if there are any advantages? If you are on the east coast and you try earlier in the day a lot of easterners are not online and the west coast has barely gone to bed.

Wind and rain can affect a dish, we find that with our television.

I have included a link to some addons that might be useful if the price is right.

Another thing you might do is check your Event viewer to see if any error messages are there to aid you.
Click Start
click Control panel
click Administrative tools
click Event viewer
Click System on the left side.
Now scroll down the right side looking for red error flags or yellow warning messages. Double click on any to see another window with a slightly better description of the error. There will also be a link there you can click for a more in depth analysis.

It's something more than the server....I have a post below this one about unresponsive programs..don't know how to post a link, but it's towards the bottom of the forum page. The programs just seem to stop running and you get that message and then the "end now" message....this was on my Word Porgram..nothing to do with websites.

Maybee if you mean this thrad I thought we had brought that to a successful conclusion. You even put a smiley in the final post of the thread. Are you still having issues with that problem?

ilmbg clearly states her/his issue is when he is online or trying to get back online. Of course, you could be right but we can only answer as we interpret what the original posted decides to write.

Nope...it "is" resolved...but, I was just saying I was having that not responding thing and it had nothing to do with anything on the internet. When I ran those updates (which I didn't even know were there) My puter started perking right along again. So..I think maybe that message is a computer problem and not an internet problem...or different things could possibly cause it.

Any application can generate a 'not responding' message and for different reasons. In Internet Explorer, without other errors, it will most likely be a problem with the connection or the user's internal network. Your issue with Word had a totally different cause âº Experience with troubleshooting makes it a bit easier to diagnose.

owbrist- There is another poster on here that is having problems also- 'maybee'. It is making replies a bit confusing. I think our threads are very similiar.Either I got on her thread, or she on mine. With the frustration I have been having I doubt I put a smiley face- unless I was nuts!
I did go to the Event- there were red marks, and all except one had 'atapi', and they were in device/ide/ideport1, or device/cdrom0.
I did another scan, so I will see what happens today.
I see there were so very many items in the Event- everyplace that I have ever been, right?
Say- after 6 months or a year- even longer- don't these jam up or take up alot of room in the computer? I am thinking about this because my computer is small.
Is there a way to dump them to a smaller/compressed version, so they don't take up so much room?
If I am correct, you can never 'delete/empty' something- once it is in the computer it is always there in one form or another- so how do I make more room- my computer is 2 1/2 years old- it must have tons of not needed 'stuff'.
Also, does it matter which one I do first when I do the antispyware,scan, etc? Thank you

I forgot to ask- could the problem be that I have AVG, Super antispyware, Spybot search and destroy and Malware all on the computer. Some of you suggested all except the AVG- I already had that. Should I have deleted the AVG program? I know they compete. We do have a small server- it is a small town, I don't know if they have overextended themselves- it is TCTwest.

those programs are all ok together you just do not want to run any of the scans at the same time, so if you are doing your antivirus AVG scan do not run a scan with any others and same for Malwarebytes and superantispyware, the only one that runs full time is your AVG the others are all manual. You never want 2 antivirus programs on the pc they can cause conflicts so whatever you had prior to AVG did you get rid of it completely?

I would not worry with the event viewer logs they are not there forever they only go for so long. Plus being just text they would not take up much room.

The best way to get space back is to go through your programs and remove any that you no longer need or use and to put things like pictures on some other backup like cd, dvd or back up hard drive and take them off your pc, pictures and music take up a lot of space. I like to use little flash drives plus they are easy to carry around and cheap.

And clear your cache, temp files etc on your browsers, run disc cleanup or a program like ATF.

I do not use or recommend using registry cleaners so on any program you may choose to get I would personally stay away from the registry cleaner part.

OK- I think things are better- today I had the problem of the computer closing everything only once- much better- although still frustrating.
Raven- I had Norton, which you told me to get rid of awhile ago- and then you had me ad the others.
I don't do any music.pic downloads- I just browse-lurk-email back and forth with friends.

I see you added a comment to Urlee's thread that you have not got this sorted. I thought as you had asked about other items and ravencajun had replied you were moving along nicely, obviously not.

So why not perhaps start a new thread - or continue here. But before you do that go into the Event viewer, click on each choice on the left side and check for errors on the right side. You suggest you have 2 different error messages, so double click on each and record the 4 digit error code plus the source information showing above and any relevant comments in the box below. The 'atapi' error refers to a CD/DVD error

what you are trying to say when you said that it shuts the computer down but not really all the way down...
All that is happening is that it is shutting down your browser that means your browser crashed it is NOT shutting down your pc saying that is misleading and leads us on the wrong direction.

So your browser is crashing, are you only using IE browser? If so I would say go download firefox browser and try it, many times it will work fine when IE is having problems.
You can use either browser, you do not have to get rid of one to use the other, you just choose which one to use by clicking the icon for it on your desktop. I only use firefox, I do not like IE.
Now what may be causing your browser to crash could be many things.
doing the event viewer will help determine those possibly.

My computer seems to be running nice and smooth, thought I would go look in the "event viewer" I have quite a few "red" and "yellow warnings, have not touched anything but one is "avgascln" I thought I had removed that the others are to do with "Microsoft Office" which which must have been in a bundle when computer was new have no use for it and thought it was removed.
Have ran virus scans all come back clean, have local phone company dsl/computer 3yrs old/sony vaio/microsoft sp2/yahoo home page.
Should I worry? have never been in "administrative tools' before.

If your not having errors associated with this file then I don't see a problem.

Why did you try to remove avgascln?

If you are not noticing problems then I would just keep on keepin on. Sometimes those errors happen and don't really mess things up it depends on what it is. for example if you tried to remove a program and part of it did not get removed it could throw a red flag, if some program tries to run while something else is running it could conflict and throw a flag. But when we have things happen where we see pop up warnings etc then going to take a look is a good idea since we might find the cause.

It could be that you need to go get the updates for your MS Office programs and if you have it on your pc you most definitely should be getting the updates because there have been many many big security updates for office products. If you have it on your pc and do not do the security updates it can leave you open and vulnerable to some stuff you don't want to be open and vulnerable to. Not all office programs get their updates thorough windows updates so you must go to the actual office update page and scan your pc to see what it says you need. And usually it will ask you to put your MS Office CD in the cd drawer at some point during the updates.

I would not get rid of MS Office that is a very very expensive program and if you ever need to create a document or type a letter etc you will need it.

I removed (I thought) AVG virus thing and downloaded Avast/SuperAntiSpyware/Comodo BOclean/Zone Alarm/Malwarebytes/SpywareBlaster & CCleaner.
The Microsoft Office must have been free when I brought the computer for 30 days after that buy it which I did not.

I will leave well enough alone and thank you for the answers just had to take a look at what is in this machine.
