Windows Update won't do updates

Toshiba laptop. Fresh install of Windows XP home edition.
Open Internet Explorer, click Tools>>Windows Update
It goes to windows update and searches and searches and searches........
Processor use goes to 100%, have to use task manager to close IE.

Automatic updates don't seem to be doing anything either.

Downloaded sp3 manually and installed it. Installed Firefox.

This is a laptop I am fixing for someone. Can someone here please help?

Try resetting Windows Update components first, run the fixit at the link below

I would try one of 3 options there perhaps. Someone else may come up with a simpler fix if you care to wait a while, you are in no danger. Reboot and try again. Or open Windows Explorer, find and delete the log file mentioned and try the install again. Failing that I would download the whole Zonealarm program (being sure to stay on the free version). Then remove your internet connection, use the Add/Remove to get rid the current Zonealarm and install the downloaded program. Here is a link that might be useful: Free Zonealarm download site

Postings on the tech support forums I am on are indicating that this update has started being pushed out. You may notice your pc telling you it has updated and needs to be rebooted even when you did not do any updates. The only way to stop it is to completely turn off updates. So far I am not seeing any problems related to this update, but will let y'all know if I do. There is also another Windows Genuine Advantage Notification tool update happening, here is some info. Boy, do I know what you're going thru. I have two children to a previous marriage, my first husband was killed. I remarried a few years later to a wonderful man that loves my two kids, and three years ago, we had a child of our own. Our daughter was born with Down Syndrome. She is beautiful and healthy. My husbands parents didn't react so well when they found our she was downs. They treated her like a sick child, they told people she had "a touch of Down Syndrome". Well, to make a long story short, we told them that we didn't want her treated differently than the other gkids. She is healthy and wonderful, and she need to be treated that way. They were angry and didn't speak to us for 8 mos. That was almost two years ago, and still to this day Alison isn't attached to her grandparents. We visit pretty often, but it is almost like they missed the bonding time when she was a baby and Alison knows it. I really hope that your mother realizes that building loving relationships with her family is too important to throw away on a stupid power struggle. If not, she will miss out on so much that can never be returned to her. I understand your frustration, but you can't make her resolve these differences. She made this decision to be angry, and she has to make the decision to get glad! You need to not be so hard on yourself. She's a grown woman with a mind of her own. Maybe you both just need a little distance right now.

You did a fantastic job! What a difference a few key touches can make. You know, it wasn't so much that the border was bad, it was more that it was too personal. It was almost like if you'd painted "Ncamy's Kitchen" on the wall. Nothing wrong with it for when it is your kitchen, but of course, I wouldn't want my kitchen to say that. Best thing about it is all the bargains you got for the knobs, lights & faucets. This could have easily cost you three times as much if you hadn't done your homework. Congratulations on a job well done. I hope your house sells quickly. Please come back and tell us when it does!

You can reset IE to default settings, under Internet Options, Advanced tab, let it remove custom settings. I have honestly seen 'fresh out of the box' computers benefit from an IE reset when other troubleshooting failed.

Do you have a firewall or antivirus running?

I tried all 3 links. First link was an app that did some stuff and I got a screen
shot of the results. It showed that 3 issues remained when it was done.

The second link led me to download and reinstall a version of Windows Update.
This would load the WU page, then refresh and refresh and refresh........

The second link was also for a reinstall of a version of WU (different version).
I went to Windows Update and it is currently checking for Updates.
And checking and checking and checking and checking.........
Gave up. It was at 100% CPU when I Ended Task on IE.

No antivirus running yet. I don't know which one the laptop's owner wants.
Firewall is just windows firewall. I tried resetting the options. No Go.

What now please?

Windows update error 0x800B0100 as shown in the screen shot above, there is yet another fixit for that as shown here, for XP

Make sure your time and date are correct too.

Looking at the last 2 errors below for you, have to Google search them. You can try the same.

Service registration is missing or corrupt --Need to google

I re-installed the OS and sp3 and Internet Explorer 8.

I've got it down to this error:
Service registration is missing or corrupt

The automatic fixer doesn't fixit and I don't understand the manual instructions.
It wants me to look at a registry key but doesn't specify EXACTLY which one.

How do I find SID and SQUID?

I did install Trend Micro antivirus and activated Office 2003.

Automatic Update seems to be working. 131 updates are being installed.

I can't understand it either, and I don't have sid or squid. The only thing I can suggest is to visit the forum in the link and post in the windows up date section, they are specialist no fooling around...

There was really only one location that matched down to the last number.
But then there was about a dozen SQUIDs listed. Which one?

Can you do this, If you have time.

Click Start, and then click Run.
In the Open box, type windowsupdate.log, and then click OK.

Can you post the log somewhere and leave a link for it here.

It would be way to big for here, rather not have it here anyway.

It will probably tell us what we already know

I returned the laptop to the owner and told her about the problem.
She was very happy to have a working laptop again.
I don't charge for my work so not being able to fix it was not an issue.
