Avast won't update.

Dell, Win7-64

I updated my Avast to the latest version (5.1.889) yesterday and now I can't update the latest definitions. When I try, it says "Last encountered error:Invalid file signature. Set up will terminate."

Current registration will expire on:2/6/11

I have never had any problems with Avast before. I have tried all the suggestions that I found searching the archives, but still not updating.

I have rebooted, but have not tried system restore.

It appears to be working now. Will have to wait and see.

Jean whenever I get a scare like that I feel it is important to run both a virus scan and a malware scan just to build my self confidence.

I would try one of 3 options there perhaps. Someone else may come up with a simpler fix if you care to wait a while, you are in no danger. Reboot and try again. Or open Windows Explorer, find and delete the log file mentioned and try the install again. Failing that I would download the whole Zonealarm program (being sure to stay on the free version). Then remove your internet connection, use the Add/Remove to get rid the current Zonealarm and install the downloaded program. Here is a link that might be useful: Free Zonealarm download site

I re-installed the OS and sp3 and Internet Explorer 8. I've got it down to this error: Service registration is missing or corrupt http://support.microsoft.com/kb/971187 The automatic fixer doesn't fixit and I don't understand the manual instructions. It wants me to look at a registry key but doesn't specify EXACTLY which one. HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Installer\UserData\(sid)\Patches\(squid) replaced with ( and ). How do I find SID and SQUID? Glad that it finally got its act together, Shax. Sometimes there's no apparent reason for why an app or program suddenly hiccups. I have found...over the years...that holidays are busy internet times often overloading the airways...that slow down certain processes...testing our patience. Perhaps that's what caused your update problem. If it repeats...run Chameleon. And/or take a look at your Event log to see if you can get a clue there as to what's causing the problem.

there has been an issue with the latest version of Avast and a lot of Dell computers, many had to use safe mode to uninstall Avast.

Should anyone have this problem uninstall AVAST then try doing a re-install they are working on the fix and it should be pushed out already.

There may be other brands having the issue but most were Dell.

If you have not updated AVAST to the latest VERSION you may want to hold off for a week or so, no big hurry the old version is still fine.
