Can't update/register my Avast Antivirus

I'm confused. I installed Avast antivirus on my new thinkpad in September. I haven't used the laptop in over a month, and it is now saying my antivirus is expired. It gives me the option to upgrade to a paid version, or renew the free version I have. But when I click to renew the free version, it asks for my license key number. I have no idea what this number is (I dont recall getting one - and certainly didn't write it down). There's a link to click if you need help getting the product license key, but when i click on that, it tries to get me to register my free trial of Microsoft Office 2007 - which I don't want. I have open office on this computer and am not interested inactivating a trial program (in fact, I want to delete it and could use advice on removing it completely).

But I dont know why Microsoft Office is coming up when clicking on an Avast link (are they related?). My other option is to click FAQ for Avast - but they keeps taking me to a page that won't load - says it can't find URL. It gives me a link to click for just www.avast.com - but that'w what leads to the Office window.

How can I find my license key for Avast - or somehow renew it. I didn't realize it would expire. Is this typical for free Avast?

So now I'm running without antivirus. Don't want to do that for much longer.

After my earlier post, i thought I'd click the Avast link one more time. This time it worked. Apparently, the first download of Avast is a 60-day demo mode. After that, I have to request a key number, which Avast will email to me. That will be good for one year and then i have to re-register. So I'm not going crazy - i never had a key number - but will soon. As to why that link didn't work the first half a dozen times, I don't know. But all is well now. Thanks.

some software gives the full download hoping you will continue with professional version.just ignoring usually leaves you with free version..

there has been an issue with the latest version of Avast and a lot of Dell computers, many had to use safe mode to uninstall Avast. Should anyone have this problem uninstall AVAST then try doing a re-install they are working on the fix and it should be pushed out already. There may be other brands having the issue but most were Dell. If you have not updated AVAST to the latest VERSION you may want to hold off for a week or so, no big hurry the old version is still fine.

Revo uninstaller is sort of a combined way to uninstall programs and clean up the registry for that programs left overs and some of the left over files/folders it might leave. It's not always 100% effective but its better than windows uninstall - which is really just running the programmers uninstaller. You can try to use revo... I always run it on its most aggressive scan. . To me it sounds like you might need to reinstall AVG 12 the older version..... disable it.... uninstall it maybe with Revo first... then follow up with the AVG uninstall tool .. most want you to run that tool from safe mode. Was your Kaspersky expired? that is a very good antivirus program. Have you read up here about some of the issues with the new AVG8? You might want to so that you can be aware and ready when you do your install. There are some options for items to choose to install or not install that you should be aware of.

AVAST has always done that it tells you in the install directions that you will need to click the register button and it will email you the code number which you just enter into your AVAST program super easy, it last about a year then you just do it again and get a number and it is good for another year. Never had it ask me to buy anything or email me anything other than my code.

Plus on the left side there are the 2 pdf files I suggest everyone read or print to have handy, it gives all the info on how to set up AVAST and how to use features including the screensaver scan feature.
