Can't update/register my Avast Antivirus

I'm confused. I installed Avast antivirus on my new thinkpad in September. I haven't used the laptop in over a month, and it is now saying my antivirus is expired. It gives me the option to upgrade to a paid version, or renew the free version I have. But when I click to renew the free version, it asks for my license key number. I have no idea what this number is (I dont recall getting one - and certainly didn't write it down). There's a link to click if you need help getting the product license key, but when i click on that, it tries to get me to register my free trial of Microsoft Office 2007 - which I don't want. I have open office on this computer and am not interested inactivating a trial program (in fact, I want to delete it and could use advice on removing it completely).

But I dont know why Microsoft Office is coming up when clicking on an Avast link (are they related?). My other option is to click FAQ for Avast - but they keeps taking me to a page that won't load - says it can't find URL. It gives me a link to click for just www.avast.com - but that'w what leads to the Office window.

How can I find my license key for Avast - or somehow renew it. I didn't realize it would expire. Is this typical for free Avast?

So now I'm running without antivirus. Don't want to do that for much longer.

After my earlier post, i thought I'd click the Avast link one more time. This time it worked. Apparently, the first download of Avast is a 60-day demo mode. After that, I have to request a key number, which Avast will email to me. That will be good for one year and then i have to re-register. So I'm not going crazy - i never had a key number - but will soon. As to why that link didn't work the first half a dozen times, I don't know. But all is well now. Thanks.

some software gives the full download hoping you will continue with professional version.just ignoring usually leaves you with free version..

there has been an issue with the latest version of Avast and a lot of Dell computers, many had to use safe mode to uninstall Avast. Should anyone have this problem uninstall AVAST then try doing a re-install they are working on the fix and it should be pushed out already. There may be other brands having the issue but most were Dell. If you have not updated AVAST to the latest VERSION you may want to hold off for a week or so, no big hurry the old version is still fine.

grandms that link there on the avast site links to the cnet download page if you put your cursor over the download button you can see at the bottom of the screen the cnet address. I bet what is happening when you click on the big download now arrow on that cnet download page, it sends you to another page where the actual download file pops up in a pop up box my guess is you have the pop up blocked and are not seeing it, you firefox or IE should show you a bar at the top saying you need to click there to allow the box. Since you are not seeing that pop up all you are seeing is the link for the pay version. Is your download blocked? if you have that blocked then you probably will not get the one from mikies link either. another site you can try from is major geeks just click on one of the download locations Avast! Bear in mind that my experience is only with free Avast, NOT paid Avast. The Software Updater is useful ONLY to notify you which of your programs need to be updated. I WOULD NOT use SU to update your programs because Avast uses something called OPEN CANDY and as a result you might see offers to purchase other software based on your usage patterns and what is already installed on your system. Some folks regard it as a PUP (Potentially Unwanted Program). I doubt that it is harmful but it is a potential nuisance. Avast uses it as a chance to make some $ while they are offering you free virus protection (and that has worked pretty well for me so far). I prefer to do my updates manually and that's not a problem for me. I still get occasional offers to purchase other things but I suspect I would get more if I allowed Open Candy to do so by using the SU. The Browser Cleanup tool is another example of something Avast offers of dubious usefulness. I would NOT use it but as always, YMMV. Edit: If you do your updates manually, you can look at SU again and it will show the updates have been done. This post was edited by azinoh on Wed, Jul 9, 14 at 13:42

AVAST has always done that it tells you in the install directions that you will need to click the register button and it will email you the code number which you just enter into your AVAST program super easy, it last about a year then you just do it again and get a number and it is good for another year. Never had it ask me to buy anything or email me anything other than my code.

Plus on the left side there are the 2 pdf files I suggest everyone read or print to have handy, it gives all the info on how to set up AVAST and how to use features including the screensaver scan feature.
