Windows won't check for updtes

I have Windows 7. I have it set to automatically check for updates and then notify me, if there are any. Today I updated Firefox to 25.01 and since then, I get the message that Windows could not search for new updates (Error 80073712). I have no idea if that has anything to do with updating Firefox, though I have my doubts.

I've researched that error message, and it usually says it's a problem with installing updates, and there are various 'fixes'.

What is the best way to proceed?

So when you post again, tell us that you have run the windows up-date readiness tool. See if that fixes it, if it does not. Run system file checker. As out lined in mikie's link. If those 2 items don't fix it and it becomes a struggle, your next action is to have the cbs log reviewed by a person who can understand the log report.

Windows up-Date issues are sometimes caused by file corruption hence the reason for running System file checker.

The up -date readiness tool resets windows up-date components, checks the BIT service an more.

Locate and open your pictures. How to highlight or select one or more pictures. Jocobe, I think that you are misunderstanding the problem. The upper sash is not drifting, It stays up. The problem is that when the window is locked, there is still a gap. Balances have absolutely zero to do with this, as the materials have either shrunk, settled, etc to cause this as has been mentioned already. Bottom line: the windows are due for replacement. To fix it for now (until budget permits replacement): either add a thin piece of wood to the sill or head, or add additional weatherstripping to one or both. You can buy stick-on foam bulb seal in rolls from the store that would probably do the trick for a while. Shimming the lock/keeper would be another option. Ultimately, what you are trying to do is fill in the frame to take up the "slop" that is present when you move the sashes up and down when they are locked together.

You might want to see how the mechanism is attached. Sometimes, you have to remove part of the sill to reach the screws that hold the operator in place. I think that you should also check building codes in your area because windows may be the only point of egress for a room and would have to remain operable. They do make a smaller T-shaped crank that can replace the longer handle, but it still protrudes a bit. Here is a link that might be useful: T-shaped Handle

There are no electronics on this unit. Old-style mechanical thermostat. Sounds like the thermostat is erratic per your description but a proper diagnosis is needed to confirm it. How long are you waiting for the compressor to cycle back on? Could be the sensor (capillary tube) got disturbed recently, positioned wrong and getting a false reading. Some are supposed to be attached to the evaporator, some aren't supposed to touch it. The thermostat is Part Number WJ28X10009. Variously tagged as no longer available and/or out-of-stock. One source says out-of-stock but ships in 5 to 6 days. There's one on eBay claimed to be new-in-box item. You can buy a new 5K BTU unit from Walmart for that price. Genuine GE WJ28X10009 - New As mentioned above, a possible workaround as long as the unit otherwise runs is to rig-in an external thermostat. The device plugs into an outlet, then the unit is plugged into it and is controlled by it. The thermostat on the A/C should be set to the coldest position for the external thermostat to operate it. I ran the Troubleshooter, and it said it found no problems.

The Update Readiness Tool didnÃ¢ÂÂt find/fix the problem either. The taskbar icon for updates still has a red x by it and still says that Windows couldnÃ¢ÂÂt search for new updates.

I tried the System File Checker, but it came up with the message Windows Resource Protection could not perform the requested operation. IÃ¢ÂÂm wondering if thatÃ¢ÂÂs caused by the same problem or an entirely different one.

I guess my next step is to let someone read the cbs log, as suggested by zep. I'll go to LandzDown for that.

Yes many times system file checker fails on a windows up date issue and can't fix it.

I was going to send you here, see link. You will see the windows update section on the forum and posting instructions. Yes they will want the CBS Log report, and they provide instructions to do it. The CBS Log is already on your computer and shows all the errors that Windows up date is generating......

If you already posted at Landz, someone there may direct you to the same link I have provided here for you.
