Recycling old computer with personal data

Lars

I have an old computer that I want to get rid of, and I was thinking of taking it to a recyling center in El Segundo. The computer does not work - it cannot be turned on, but the hard drive has information including my SS number and tax returns on it. The operating system was Windows Vista.

Is it okay to take this computer to a recylcing center, or is there a danger of someone retrieving information from it, even though I cannot? If I could access the data, I would delete it, but I cannot even get a start screen. What would happen if I took the computer to a recycling center? Would they simply recycle the parts?
