Got home last night to find a huge box on my porch. Couldn't remember ordering anything....then it hit me....SWAP PACKAGE!!

Ilisa (aka ArabellaMiller)was on her toes to get this done so soon!

And she obviously did her homework as she sent these lovely things:

1. a bottle of Jacobs Creek Grand Reserve Shiraz. Had a couple of glasses last night, it is very good!

2. A "Charm" corkscrew from IKEA. As she stated in the letter she included, "You can never have enough corkscrews!" (How True!)

3. A package of Spanish Olive Oil Crisp Bread. These are divine. Kind of like a big flat cookie, slightly sweet and crunchy with sugared almonds and a hint of anise. These won't last long!

4. Trader Joe's chocolate covered blueberries. I brought these to work to munch on. MMMMM

5. A box of decadent chocolate truffles. These just melt in your mouth! So good!

6. And a $10 gift certificate to TJ's for when ours opens up here!

7. And the box was strewn with Lindt chocolate truffles, too! Guess this should take care of my chocolate fix for a while!

Ilisa, this was the perfect ending to a long cold day! Thank you SO MUCH for all of these fabulous treats! As you can tell, I have already sampled them all, and between Tim and me, they will be gone before weeks end, I am sure! I don't yet have a digital, so I hope Ilisa took photos.

Kiendu & Troutwind, Once a hosta flower is fertilized, a pod will form. If no pod forms, then either it wasn't fertilized, or it was, but aborted. The flower will then dry up & fall off. The seeds are in the pod. It generally takes 2 months for the pod to mature. Once it does, it (usually) will split open and the seeds will scatter. You could also pick them before they open, and dry the pods in a paper bag. The seeds should be black, or very dark. White or clear ones generally are not viable. Different plants vary in size as you can see: You can't tell really from the picture, but one end should have a distinct "bump"; that's actually the seed. (No bump=not viable.) The black is just chaff to help scatter the seed into the wind. They do not need cold to germinate, so you could plant the seeds indoors in fall/winter, or sow them outside in fall, and they will germinate in spring. They will germinate on the soil surface, or also lightly covered with soil. Important to note, that hosta seedlings do not usually look like the pod parent. Most are greenies, but they do pass on traits of the parents, such as rippled edges, plant & leaf shape, color, but not variegation. Variegated hostas almost always come from a streaked pod parent. Even with a streaked pod parent, you still get alot of solid colored seedlings. Wendy

I'm out for this year due to the drought here in the Southeast. I am just a small backyard grower that sells at a tiny farmers market in a neighboring city. I mostly grow stuff that does well for me in my yard, a lot of ornamentals, some herbs, veggie starts, a pretty big mix because the customer's tastes change throughout the season. The drought and high heat really did a number on me last summer and this summer is predicted to be worse, much worse. Now they have very tight watering restrictions in place to save as much water as possible for drinking ($1000 fine the first time you're caught using public water to water your garden, water shut off the second time!!!!!). They now measure the amount of available water in days rather than months. Needless to say, most people are not buying plants. Many local nurseries and growers have gone out of business. Some of them lost everything including their land and homes in the process. It is a sad sad situation. I can keep the stock I have now alive by hauling water up from a creek til it goes dry. I can spend the year making adjustments to my display and building more birdhouses (reliable sellers). In other words, get my act together. But selling doesn't look good until it rains enough to lift these restrictions. With gas getting more expensive, the economy tanking, it does look like a tough ride this next summer but I believe I will be perfectly situated to jump in once things turn around - I may have no competition when that day comes.

Welcome to SFG. You should never bother to feel silly. I have been gardening my whole life and still make mistakes. Gardening is really an experiment. Sometimes the best combinations happen by accident. We had some real nice weather and I went and planted my tomatoes last week, thinking that I could just cover them if it got too cold. Well, it did get cold and I covered them. Then we got gusts of up to 60mph and my cover got blown off. There was no way to rectify it. So the best laid plans sometimes don't pan out. Just have fun and see what works out. Last year I planted some companion plants to deter bugs. I had to rip most of them out because they were too large for the veggies. Not sure when our TJ's will open, couldn't find a number to call them. So I guess I will just wait. In the meantime if I go visit Erin I can always use my GC at one of the Chicagoland TJ's.

I'm so glad the wine arrived without issue! As you can tell, I had a hard time with the "mini" part of this swap. There were so many things I wanted to send!

I wish I had remembered to take a picture. Oh well, you did a great job of describing everything.

I'm glad you like the wine - sometimes wine can be a very personal taste, but I love that one and was hoping you would too. I was a little nervous because you are much more of a wine afficianado than me!

OK, so where are the pictures? (grin)

I can see three "separate" items: The wine and corkscrew are one, the food items are two and the gift certificate is three. Simple as can be, and you're still within limits. Ahem. That's sure a nice box, though.

Great package. Wine and chocolate works for me any day. I really need to get going. Can't make up my mind at all what I want to do. I'm engrossed in sites on Disneyland and SW France and I need to be working on my swap package and my mother's 80th BD. Forgive me partner for being so distracted.
