needing a cable if not using fax

I recieved a Lexmark model 4451-001 from a friend. There is no cable, just the electric cord. I will not be using the fax- in fact I do not even have a landline.

My question is which cable do I need to get? I assume NOT the one that plugs into the Lexmark to the phone line. I must need a cable from computer(Acer) to Lexmark.

I do not have an instruction book- where can I get one, and also, this probably is too old to be a wireless, isn't it(2007-02)?

If it's less than 7 years old...it probably needs a USB printer cable. Is this an inkjet or a laser printer? I couldn't find anything looking for Lexmark 4451-001. Are you sure that this is the model number?

I don't know if it is laser or not. The model and serial numbers are printed in Japanese, then in US print.
Tha serial number is 08060501167. Even though the model number says 4425-001, the one sheet of paper says 5400 Series.

It's hard to make a recommendation without knowing more about what your fax needs are. If this is going to be a low-use, personal fax machine then either one would probably work. But if it's going to be used in a high-volume mission critical business application, then I'd want something more than a consumer-grade fax. Will this fax be on a dedicated line or will you be using it on an existing voice line? Will you be the only user of this fax? Which do you do more of, SEND fax or RECEIVE fax? (or do you do both equally?) For myself, I send far more than I receive and find it much more convenient to scan hardcopy into my computer and fax it directly from there through my Officejet 4500. It's much easier than hoping that multiple pages go through the document feeder without getting jammed up.

I use Windows Fax. It comes with your computer, but you may need to insert your XP disk and enable that feature. You will need a modem to dial out. You will need to be OFFLINE when you dial out (if you are on dialup). I did not need to purchase any addtional software or hardware to use Windows Fax. I already had a scanner, as the documents I needed to send had to be scanned into the computer. Here is a link that might be useful: Using Windows Fax.

I have the printer manual - thanks ! Ravencajun - the printer software was reinstalled several times on the new system - it seems the 'mother organization' has a few added restrictions on XP which is giving IS some fits on HP printers - after 2 days of fiddling, the tech changed the port that XP assigned and the fax out is now working! I was sweating bullets there for a while since we did not extend the warranty on the printer after last year, everything had been working fine for the year prior and we had had a couple of parts replaced, so we decided to chance it and not pay $200+ per year for the warranty. There's a part of me that wishes we had now since I found out HP won't even talk to me unless we pay them $400+ up front for tech support, then if they cannot solve your problem they "credit' you the fee towards a new printer. My tech agreed that adding the fax modem to allow me to fax from WORD would be a decent workaround - but it's nice to have the printer fully functional. It's funny, but when we got this all in one - many people in the organization told us that "you know if one part doesn't work, none of it works", well I know now that isn't true. Still and all - it's a great device and it allows me to churn out the work of 2 people, I wouldn't hesitate to get another!

If your computer has a fax modem you could fax a document directly from the computer, but most computers today don't come with them. I bought a printer which will print/copy/scan/fax, and it works pretty well. Mine is a HP Officejet 4500 and it comes with Windows software which simplifies the process somewhat. Probably has Mac software too but I don't know that for certain. Installing the PRINTER also installs a FAX PRINTER. When you want to fax a document, you scan it into the computer, then print it using the FAX PRINTER instead of the PRINTER and the fax software will start. Then you enter the fax phone number and away you go. All of this depends on you having a plain old landline phone which is NOT VOIP...if you are using Vonage or phone service from your cable company I think you are out of luck. Fax usually does not work well over VOIP. HTH.

Lift the lid...does it have ink cartridges or a toner cartridge?

There isn't any- it is empty. It does have a 'Lexmark Color 33' that came with it- there was also a 'Black 32', but it is missing.
I am wondering if I need a cord/color, that it might be better to go buy a cheap printer. This was free to my neighbor who gave it to me- is it worth it to get what it needs?

Take a look at this page. Looks like you need a USB cable.
If it were me, with the price of Lexmark ink, if I were going to use it very much I would just buy a cheap new printer - probably a Canon.

my guess is just a standard printer cable to go from printer to pc is what you need, look at what the plugin area looks like on the printer so you know what connector end should look like.

see if it looks like those so you know if it is serial, parallel , or usb to printer
IF it is the usb to printer type you can find those for cheap, I have bought them at big lots.

Yes, I think you would be much further ahead to buy a new printer unless you were absolutely sure this one was working when it was given to you. Sadly even if well intentioned the gift of a used printer is a nuisance.

For it to work you need the cable plus cartridges which total as much money if not more than a new printer. Sadly those cables can be very expensive when you consider it is just a piece of wire with a specialised plug at each end.

I agree- I think I will just buy an inexpensive printer possibly. I haven't had one for 4 years, so if I get one OK, if not, OK.
