Adding a Fax Modem

I work for a large organization with an IT department than I swear is driving me mad. Last week, moments before someone was to come to my office to 'upgrade' my OS to WIN XP from WIN 2000, my system died an unnatural death. I have a HP2840 printer, copier, scanner,and fax all in one that has worked exceptionally the past 3 years, however, the tech who swapped my cpu and had to add the printer, cannot get the fax sending function to work properly. It will receive faxes, but I cannot send a fax from a word document or a PDF - and I need these functions! I am also being told that the organization 'does not support' my machine (due to driver issues or so I am told). My fear is that I will be left w/o my fax function (using Word documents and PDFs).

I installed the printer when I first received it 3 years ago, but due to not being allowed registry access by the administrator, the IT tech guy had to install everything.

I am thinking I can install a fax modem and simply use that to accomplish my faxing of word and pdf files - does this sound too outrageous or devilishly simple?

Any ideas would be appreciated.

There is a link below to the HP website that has some discussion about the inability to fax from the printer. Look over that one first.

I Googled using 'dialup modem for Windows 7' but never read any responses. I was satisfied to find numerous links, perhaps you could look through a few for options. Drivers might well be the biggest stumbling block. Your current modem would possibly fit if it is a PCI modem and not the older Vesa. However drivers might very well be the biggest issue. Regarding the tv tuner I suspect with your download speeds it would be impossible to view anything in real time. A tv tuner card is just a PCI card which you would drop into a vacant PCI slot. Hauppauge are big in tv tuner cards.

Problem solved. In case anyone is interested, the problem was not with FiOS. Previously, I had two copper phone lines- one for voice, and one for computer connection/fax. (MY fax is a program on the computer, not a separate machine) When I got the fibre optics, I dropped one line, as I can talk on the phone, and use the computer, at the same time. The problem was with the shared line. (I would have had the same problem if I had a shared copper line) I was told I had to get a Voice/Fax/Modem call processor, or "fax switch". I got one called, "The Stick". I installed it a little bit improperly at first, but their tech support got me straightened out quickly, and now everything works fine.

DUNS ERROR 718 718 - PPP timeout. This error indicates a PPP conversation was started, but was terminated because the remote server did not respond within an appropriate time. This can be caused by poor line quality or a problem with the server (ISP). Have you checked 'System preferences' to see if the fax modem is listed and the drivers show as installed correctly?

I have the printer manual - thanks !

Ravencajun - the printer software was reinstalled several times on the new system - it seems the 'mother organization' has a few added restrictions on XP which is giving IS some fits on HP printers - after 2 days of fiddling, the tech changed the port that XP assigned and the fax out is now working! I was sweating bullets there for a while since we did not extend the warranty on the printer after last year, everything had been working fine for the year prior and we had had a couple of parts replaced, so we decided to chance it and not pay $200+ per year for the warranty. There's a part of me that wishes we had now since I found out HP won't even talk to me unless we pay them $400+ up front for tech support, then if they cannot solve your problem they "credit' you the fee towards a new printer.

My tech agreed that adding the fax modem to allow me to fax from WORD would be a decent workaround - but it's nice to have the printer fully functional. It's funny, but when we got this all in one - many people in the organization told us that "you know if one part doesn't work, none of it works", well I know now that isn't true.

Still and all - it's a great device and it allows me to churn out the work of 2 people, I wouldn't hesitate to get another!
