Modem Problem

I still connect to the internet using a 56K PCI fax modem.

Last night, my computer couldn't fully connect to give me access. I could hear it dial, but I received Error 718, a timeout failure when trying to verify my username and password.

My research has shown this error is the failure of the modem to synchronize with the modem on the other side.

I can hear the modem dial like always, it just doesn't fully connect with the internet service provider.

Is my modem shot? Anything I should try first?

Do you know if your provider had trouble with their modems? There is usually a modem troubleshooter in the device properties. Do you know how to get into Device Manager? What is the OS?

All right, I purchased a modem (Dynex DX-M102 from Best Buy) on my way home from work tonight. The old one is working again, so I'm thinking I may not open the new one quite yet.

Could this be that I am needing to download the latest driver updates, as I never have done so? If so, where do I go? Is the download specific to the computer (Lenovo), operating system (XP), or the modem manufacturer (it looks like it is a Conexant SoftV90 Data Fax Modem)?

Something very similar happened to me a couple of weeks ago. My ISP said that it looked like blah, blah, blah was gone or missing. When I went to Control Panel there was no icon there for the ISP. I too did a system restore and then all was well once again....just like magic.

If you Google Potential Connection Issue (Message ID: NAD-2902) It does appear to be some sort of issue with that Motorola modem an other models like it, the biggest problem with your model I saw was over heating. Suggestions, get a new modem if it constantly gives the error and no real issue is present.

LOL, Rosa - I had trouble setting up my iPad, too...I think I somehow bypassed the first setup screen. Took forever to figure out how to tell it I wasn't in Bermuda! :) They sure leave a lot of it up to you to figure out. I finally found the iPad user's guide on the Apple website. My mom keeps saying she wants to buy a new car. Her current car is a 1988 model (I think), and she hates both change and technology. I can't imagine trying to teach her about a new car with all the changes they've made since 1988! My brother got her either Dish TV or Direct TV one year. The guy came and installed all the stuff and left. Well, he may have given her the 2 minute training session they tend to give! LOL Anyway, she turned the TV on, her favorite channel wasn't at the right number, and she called them to cancel it and come get their equipment. They cancelled the service but no one ever came to get the dish and other stuff, so they are still there. She won't even let us unplug any of it because she's afraid her house will burn down or something. >sighsighDonna

you said that the voltage was measured from teh center pin of the modem to any grounded outlet with the cable disconnected. that almost rules out faulty wiring in the home. teh center pin is isolated inside the modem. if you had faulty wiring, the threaded part of the connector should read voltage, but not the center pin. can you take the modem to another location, such as work or a friends house, and measure voltage. if it is still there, then you have a bad modem. if it is gone, then we need to look closer at your home. another thing to check in your home is to measure both from center pin and shield of the coax from the wall to ground. neither of these should read anything. best to do this with an analog meter. if they do read voltage, go outside and disconnect your cable at the demarc. check the cables going in your house for voltage, and the ones coming from teh cable co. if you have voltage from teh cable co, then they have a bad amp in the line and need to replace it. if you have voltage on the house wires side, then you have a problem. do you have any satellite devices? sat rx do output voltage to power the LNB, and unless the proper multi switch is used they can cause bleed over sending DC voltage to devices. a nearby neighbor could even be doing it. i have seen several sat installs where the person has basic cable and satellite and the installer screwed up and sent the LNB power to the cable side. this does not harm devices, but it can cause flakey reception.

I had similar problems when my ISP shut down the phone lines for some type of maintenance. Nothing I could do but it was unexpected. I called a 800- number and they told me to try later. It worked fine then.

Another time, I did not hang up right and the land line phone appeared dead when I tried to dial (no dial tone). I disconnected and reconnected to the wall jack and the dial ring returned. When my PC attempted to call my ISP, everything worked.

DUNS ERROR 718
718 - PPP timeout.

This error indicates a PPP conversation was started, but was terminated because the remote server did not respond within an appropriate time. This can be caused by poor line quality or a problem with the server (ISP). This error can occur when your modem has connected to the ISP and has sent username and password, but there is no response from the server.

Sometimes, re-dialing will be successful.
