Modem problems?

I have trouble dialing in to my server at times. Get a scratchy sound like it is trying to connect (usual sound) like the fax sound, but then a steady hum... They told me my modem is going out, but it happens mostly just at peak times of usage..in the evenings. Today it happened in early afternoon, so wonder if it is really my modem. They told me they had more than enough lines to handle the customers, but I assumed it was just what they say. I have no trouble early mornings...ever. My modem makes no sound, and someone told me if it was the modem, it would be clanging or ...

You can try testing your modem. Are you running XP, or something older? If we know your operating system we/someone can help you find/run the modem test. Your OS "Help" with "Modem Trouble" put in the search should give you the test facility.

If the modem works sometimes, I'd guess it most likely a line problem, is there any relationship between failure and the weather, e.g., raining?

Jerry...thanks for that. You'd think my server would have offered that information. I only have trouble at peak hours of use...and not all the time and weather has no change to the service. Late evenings it is worse. They did give me a new phone # to call yesterday and no problem there...tells me it is THEIR service, which of course, they deny. I will look for that OS Help... I use XP and this computer is just almost 2 yrs old now. A Dell...(last one I will buy)

Could the 8 or 10 day time frame coincide with your system maintenance? Just a thought that perhaps you are using a "cleaning" application which is removing your modem driver. Some of them can be quite powerful when a unknowing user tinkers with the Advanced Settings. Good luck! Enjoy! DA

Thanks, all, for clarifying the modem and helping me make up my mind. I just ordered a Motorola SB5101U. It's the same as what I have from Charter Cable. There's just something about owning than leasing, isn't there. RC, I had a modem problem in March/April. The first two guys did cable stuff although I kept saying it was the modem. It belonged to Charter. The third guy replaced the modem. Charter charged me for three service calls but wiped it out when they finally determined it was their modem. You're right on target. The newly ordered modem has a one year warranty. I plan to remain with Charter so maybe in time it'll work out. Maybe not. Anyway, thanks for everyones input. Gene

If you Google Potential Connection Issue (Message ID: NAD-2902) It does appear to be some sort of issue with that Motorola modem an other models like it, the biggest problem with your model I saw was over heating. Suggestions, get a new modem if it constantly gives the error and no real issue is present.

I would add one suggestion to this...be sure to active your computer cookies, Patti. I had a similar problem a couple of weeks ago after resetting my computer resultant from a modem problem. I was in a hurry and didn't realize that resetting my browser also removed all of my acceptable "cookies". After tearing my hair out for about 15 minutes...trying to get rid of the green words...it suddenly dawned on me what the problem was. I reactivated the cookie for Garden Wed and all returned to normal. HTH Anne

Well, if the new # works better I'd say your modem is fine.

If you need help running modem tests, let me/us know, and we'll look it up. I have moved to DSL only a couple of months ago, and before that I was using Accelerator software that gave me tools to test the link to my ISP, which was/is Worldnet. You may want to check to see if your ISP offers any "free" Accelerator software. That will speed things up a bit, but also adds some complexity.
