fax machine

Some time back I was thinking of getting a fax machine but someone said you could use your computer for doing the same thing. How do you do it with the computer? Thanks BT

Some windows sort of have fax built in... type Fax into your search box in win7 you might open a window like this... plug in a telephone wire into my laptop and use the internal dial up fax modem to send a fax, for the price of a phone call.

or you search yahoo for it.. there are online companies that do it. You can buy a fax machine pretty cheap too. But Fax is kind of a old fashioned deal .. when email is so simple.

What version of windows do you have.

If your computer has a fax modem you could fax a document directly from the computer, but most computers today don't come with them. I bought a printer which will print/copy/scan/fax, and it works pretty well. Mine is a HP Officejet 4500 and it comes with Windows software which simplifies the process somewhat. Probably has Mac software too but I don't know that for certain. Installing the PRINTER also installs a FAX PRINTER. When you want to fax a document, you scan it into the computer, then print it using the FAX PRINTER instead of the PRINTER and the fax software will start. Then you enter the fax phone number and away you go.

All of this depends on you having a plain old landline phone which is NOT VOIP...if you are using Vonage or phone service from your cable company I think you are out of luck. Fax usually does not work well over VOIP. HTH.

I understand that Walgreens and some of the office suppy stores can refill cartridges. Try to see if yours is one that can be refilled. Much cheaper than a new one. To find a store near you, http://www.walgreens.com/storelocator/find.jsp Click on the button that locates one that can refill the cartridges. Here is a link that might be useful: Printer refills

As with any kind of printing device you really need to consider the total cost of ownership. Thermal fax machines are likely to be the cheapest to buy but the paper is expensive (and tends to curl plus is temperature sensitive). Any kind of inkjet will use plain paper but the cost per page will be higher than a laser. So it really depends on how you will be using it. If you're in a situation where you need a new printer, you might consider an all-in-one machine. For very light use you might consider something used (try Craig's List).

It's hard to make a recommendation without knowing more about what your fax needs are. If this is going to be a low-use, personal fax machine then either one would probably work. But if it's going to be used in a high-volume mission critical business application, then I'd want something more than a consumer-grade fax. Will this fax be on a dedicated line or will you be using it on an existing voice line? Will you be the only user of this fax? Which do you do more of, SEND fax or RECEIVE fax? (or do you do both equally?) For myself, I send far more than I receive and find it much more convenient to scan hardcopy into my computer and fax it directly from there through my Officejet 4500. It's much easier than hoping that multiple pages go through the document feeder without getting jammed up.

OK, I did it. Thanks, guys! After getting rid of so much stuff I *thought* was going to be useful, I'm very skittish anymore about bringing new stuff into the house. But, I think this will be a good thing. Even if I don't end up using it as a copier much. It seems like whenever something needs to be faxed, there's some kind of emergency involved. And who needs to add a 45-minute round trip to Office Max when there's an emergency going on to begin with. Now if I can just stay organized enough to get the rebate in on time. :)
