Some time back I was thinking of getting a fax machine but someone said you could use your computer for doing the same thing. How do you do it with the computer? Thanks BT

Some windows sort of have fax built in... type Fax into your search box in win7 you might open a window like this... plug in a telephone wire into my laptop and use the internal dial up fax modem to send a fax, for the price of a phone call.

or you search yahoo for it.. there are online companies that do it. You can buy a fax machine pretty cheap too. But Fax is kind of a old fashioned deal .. when email is so simple.

What version of windows do you have.

If your computer has a fax modem you could fax a document directly from the computer, but most computers today don't come with them. I bought a printer which will print/copy/scan/fax, and it works pretty well. Mine is a HP Officejet 4500 and it comes with Windows software which simplifies the process somewhat. Probably has Mac software too but I don't know that for certain. Installing the PRINTER also installs a FAX PRINTER. When you want to fax a document, you scan it into the computer, then print it using the FAX PRINTER instead of the PRINTER and the fax software will start. Then you enter the fax phone number and away you go.

All of this depends on you having a plain old landline phone which is NOT VOIP...if you are using Vonage or phone service from your cable company I think you are out of luck. Fax usually does not work well over VOIP. HTH.

to have a different ring you have to get that from the phone company, I have what is called distinctive ring it has a different number but it is NOT a separate line, same line only one line but with a separate number which will cause the phone to ring a specific way, mine is 2 rings in a row ring ring and when my fax hears that ring it knows to pick that call up, my regular phone ring is not picked up by the fax. There are settings in the fax itself to set for a distinctive ring situation. Mine is also an HP just go through the book it will tell you exactly what to do. But if you leave it on your regular line plugged in then it will try to answer any call. You would need to check on your specific answer machine book for how your's works with a fax machine.

PoohBear, my DSL provider, Embarq (Sprint) says if I connect my fax like a telephone, behind a filter, it should work fine. I don't use the fax often, but I can testify that I sent two signed documents via fax last week and they were accepted. The fax that "failed" was to a Credit Union. I suppose their fax is "industrial strength" and running constantly. Could it have a problem, sure. I have decided to carry on, but I will follow up on any fax sent to be sure it was received with acceptable quality. In fact I'll be in the office I sent to last week and will ask them what the quality looks like, I'll be handing in originals at that time, so I should remember.

A fax scan may be mostly black or white dots - no shades of gray. Because of this, text comes through ok but most illustrations and color do not - those will be blobs of black. If this is acceptable, then you can use a fax machine to scan your documents. Email the scans from your fax machine to your email address, and then download the emails into your computer. Test the fax machine for duplication quality. Many fax machines default to low resolution scans for transmission savings and speed. Inrease the resolution as needed assuming your machine is adjustable. If you have color documents, use a scanner. If your documents contain graphics, but gray scale is ok, use the scanner and set the output to 256 shades of gray. (Gray scale is a much smaller file size than color scans. 256 shades of gray is adequate for duplicating most black/white photos.)

there are a lot of internet faxing options many are free some charge a fee if the size is large. FaxZero.com do a google search for "internet faxing" what type of internet connections are you using, what type of modem or router? which version of windows? Are you certain there is not a built in modem in your pc already? most have them and they are generally fax modems. You could run belarc advisor on your pc and get a list of what is on it. go to this link, in the tutorial box scroll to item 100 it gives you the directions to how to use fax in windows wizard.
