Restoration Hardware lighting - any reassuring words out there?

(This is a cross post from the Lighting Forum, as it seems pretty quiet over there... apologies for the duplication. The "90 day warranty" described below is of particular concern as we are indeed building and may not even have installed the fixtures by 90 days!! PB)

Help! After "sticker shock" with light fixtures from standard lighting companies in our local lighting shop, I was all set to make the most of RH's current lighting sale: beautiful fixtures in the style I was looking for, at cheaper than I could get locally for "lesser products" even including the shipping/taxes/duty to Canada.

Sounds too good to be true? and I am starting to think it is. Didn't turn up too much direct comment on THS/GW boards but what I did find seemed to question RH light fixture quality at present. I called their customer service and they refused to tell me who manufactures their products or even from where they are imported (if they are). To top it all off, they tell me there is only a 90 day warranty.

ANYONE have any reassuring words for me? I love the look but this was to be a Big Order and I don't want to make a Big Mistake.

I ordered one Restoration Hardware light and it was mfg in China and the quality is very poor. The look is pretty and we do have it hanging up above our staircase, but the materials used flaked off and bent very easily. I was quite disappointed in the fixture but I kept it because I bought it on clearance and figured it was okay for the 65% price I paid.

What style are you looking for? For lighting, I much prefer Rejuvenation Hardware. We ordered six or seven fixtures from them, and were very pleased with the quality. If they're being manufactured cheaply in China, they sure don't look like "made in China". (They say that the fixtures are assembled in their factory, but pieces/parts are "sent out for manufacturing".)

I used the Bistro sink, tub filler and shower throughout our new home 6 years ago. The plumber dubbed me his most unique client. "Everyone else uses Delta." ;D If you're plumber is inept, as ours was, be sure they pay attention to left and right. One of my sinks turns the wrong way to go on/off, but I'm use to it now (my sink!). Be sure to see them in person - some are better than others. The original faucet I went to see look/felt lightweight/cheaply made compared to the Bistro. I'm sure you know Newport Brass makes RH things. fyi, if you're placing a large order (more than 1 item) do tell them to ship as available, as they were trying to hold mine until EVERYTHING was there, and we almost didn't get our shower valves in time. Also, the lady at the store didn't realize we needed to order the shower valves too (thought they were included) but luckily they shipped overnight.

buildinginva that is so good to hear about PB. I just got concerned when I found out they could not be used for new construction in Canada. And the problem is with the exception of workshops and garages we could do the rest of the house from PB and RH and we all know how hard it is to pick out lights. Well, at least for us it is the hardest job of all in building a house.

"for legal reasons I am not allowed to disclose..." And what law would that be? According to the FTC, "the U.S. Customs Service of the Department of the Treasury requires country-of-origin marking on foreign imports as they are received into this country and until such time as the imported product is 'substantially transformed' in the United States or sold to the ultimate purchaser." So, if their lights are made overseas, they have to be marked with the country of origin. All you're asking the rep to do is read you the label. "Look for that phrase, 'Made in ...' - what's the next word?" If they want your business, why won't they answer? The rules for identifying country of origin are a bit arcane. If they're imported, textile products are required to be identified as such in catalogs and internet listings. This isn't true of light fixtures, AFAIK, but there's no prohibition on disclosing the country of origin. I suspect the answer is that Chinese goods are getting some bad press these days. Restoration Hardware doesn't want to own up to the fact that their lights are made by Chinese sweatshops, so they made up a bogus excuse. Up to you, but I still wouldn't trade with a company of that sort.

soshh - thanks for restoring my faith in humanity. :o) I just got off the phone with RH after being told yet again that I was out of luck. I asked to speak to a supervisor, and lo and behold, we were able to figure out what the problem was. Apparently, WITHOUT MY ASKING, the previous rep processed a new order for the same Chatham pulls, but in a different size. These were shipped to me this morning, and I had no idea they were on the way. Everyone I spoke with kept telling me that the discounted pricing had already been applied to "my order," and I had no idea what they were they were talking about. They thought I was just trying to get them to honor the pricing on a completely new order, and didn't understand that what I was trying to order was supposed to be the replacement hardware for what I had returned. Isn't that the weirdest thing? So now I have to watch for this box of 37 pulls I didn't want and refuse it or send it back. Good grief! ;o) The good news is, I finally got what I DO need ordered, and they gave me the sale price on it. You all now have my permission to shop at RH again. ;o)

I personally had good luck with eight RHardware light fixtures. They seemed heavy and substantial and mounted up easily.

You could always return them if you decide you don't like them.

Thanks everyone for your input. FWIW I am looking at the schoolhouse fixtures, Qeuntin outdoor lights, classic iron chandeliers and Grafton sconces.

I have drooled over the Rejuvenation website before and now again - RH has the advantage that they have stores in Canada and so I have actually seen many of their products "with my own eyes" even though they must be ordered online; as well I can return them to the store rather than cross-border by post. And they do make it easy for Canadians by looking after the duty/brokerage fees. I envy Americans their online shopping opportunities!! But I will call Rejuvenation's customer service and ask them directly about Canadian orders...

We have two double Grafton sconces and two triple Grafton sconces, all in bathrooms. Satin nickel finish. They are very high quality and we get a lot of compliments on them. Additionally, they will accomodate a 23 watt spiral CFL wiothout hanging out the bottom.

FYI... They will not accomodate a dimmable CFL of same wattage due to the longer ballast -- they hang out.

We also have a couple of 'shelf with lower hooks' towel racks that are also very good. We would order from them again.

BTW, Cina makes more than you could imagine -- don't let that keep you away from something. Good luck with the hunt!

We've got a big pile of Restoration single Dillon sconces, as well as a triple, yet to be installed; very heavy, and the finish seems smooth and sturdy. These will be operated by wall switchs; I think they'll hold up well. I've used some cheap sconces in the past, and this is a world away. (And they're soooo good lookin'!) Stickers on the back say 'Made in China'.
