Convert Image to Icon ?

Hi,

I would like to know how easy it is to convert an image (png, jpg, etc.) into an icon file (ico). I have two FF profiles set up on my computer and would like to have a different icon in the quicklaunch bar to distinguish the second profile from the default FF profile with the regular FF icon.

I'm not thrilled with the icons available in Windows (system32), so I thought it might be possible to take an image I like and simply convert it to a icon file. I tried it, but just saving it as a "xxxxxx.ico" doesn't do the trick.

I know there are 'conversion' sites on the web, but I don't know how trustworthy (and spyware-free) they are.

So, any comments are appreciated !

free easy to use and safe conversion site online simply select your pic from your pc then select the format to change it to.

We recently bought a house with an older Amana downdraft gas range. After cooking on electric coil then electric glass top for the last 11 years I was excited to have gas... until I cooked on it. For an old piece of junk range, the downdraft was remarkably strong. Therein was the problem: the downdraft sucks the flames inward so cooking was horribly uneven. I really wanted to go induction but there wasn't room to do an induction range plus pop up downdraft and the cost of relocating an oven to a wall and doing an induction cooktop and pop up vent was cost prohibitive, so instead we bought a new gas range and are installing (in the coming weeks!) an overhead island vent, since our range is on a peninsula. Sorry this got so long, but I have strong feelings about the darn gas downdraft after being stuck with it for the last 6 months. Funny PS - we got our new range Thursday, ahead of doing our countertops early next month. It can't be installed right away due to an issue with the location of the gas outlet thingy and also the existing counters are in the way by about 1/4 inch. I'm happy cooking with a two burner hot plate, a toaster oven and a 12 year old convection oven combo microwave. That's how much I loathe the gas downdraft.

The scanner icon will work if you have a scanner. Some printer/multifunction devices include scanners. If they're asking for copies/scans, they mean copies/scans of the actual receipts (from the pharmacy, doctor's office, etc).

Thanks for the info. Since I posted this I found the person who is working with me on my project. She works for a printer and converted about 60 slides for me. I think she charged me 100 dollars. I have a few hundred more that I want to do just for my own records and I'll look whether it's feasible for me to scan them. Did you find it hard to learn how to use the scanner?

I used the free IrfanView to resize a jpg and saved it as an ico --- used them as desktops icon for awhile.

For file name, do you put name.ico?

Now, that I had a chance to try the Zamzar site, I'm afraid it didn't work well. :-( All the pics (jpg, png, etc.) that I tried to have converted to icons were not done well. Something wrong with how their software centered the image or something. The top third of them was cut off !

I'll try the IrfanView iris_gal mentioned.

I open any jpg/jpeg image file.

Under the Image drop down menu I choose Resize. When it's the size I want I click Save As under the File drop down menu.

I leave the filename the same but in the box below the filename box I click the down arrow to see a list of file extensions and click ico.

Since it has a different extension it does not replace the jpg/jpeg file.

Of course you can change the filename to something like icon-1 or whatever you want. If I remember I searched C: to find the location of the ico files and moved them to that location.

I made and tried save as in a different program which didn't have a list to choose (don't know what I did to have that as does have a list but not ico) and that is what confused me.
NOW, I did it in Irfanview and saw exactly what you said!
It has ico so I shall continue on to see if I can create icons. If so------ I want to thank the poster for this thread (learn something new) and you for the terrific way of doing it. Fun fun.

For my purposes I only wanted the icon file type so it would display as differently from the regular FF browser icon in the quicklaunch tray. So, I didn't bother with any resizing procedure before converting it and it worked out fine. Is resizing generally necessary when creating an ico file ?

Scott, you're way ahead of me. I just wanted to have floral icons on my desktop of a certain size. I haven't used them in quicklaunch tray, which with its size limitations seems to do automatically what I did manually. I did not find any size limitations with the conversion in Irfan.

Yippee Urlee --- I hope you find IrfanView as great as I do.

Okay...I can't find the icon file in C in order to put my new icons there....I'm using XP Professional. How do I get them into the icon file on my hard drive?
