Final Round: French Door KitchenAid vs GE Profile!

Hello All...

Hope this post finds you well this very early AM. I have been up most of the night trying to decide between the new

KitchenAid Architect II French Door Free Standing KBFS25ETSS and the GE Profile French Door PFSS5NJW Refrigerator/Freezers.

We have a new house with a #1 rated KitchenAid Dishwasher, a slide in KitchenAid Glass Top range, and a Whirlpool Gold Microwave. The only thing left is the fridge.

I have done my research and have come to the conclusion that I do not want an LG, Samsung, Kenmore Elite, Frigidare or Whirlpool/Amana Family because of the 1 Year Warranty.

I was all set to go with the KitchenAid until the Sales Rep caught me looking at the GE Profile. Both are extremely nice and offer extended warranties as opposed to the one year.

I know most of you know the details already so please forgive me for the reiteration.

The KitchenAid Offers a 1 / 5 / 10 year warranty

1 Year for entire fridge

5 Year for Lining, Compressor, Condensor, etc

10 Year for Compressor, Condensor, and remaining sealed parts.

The GE Profile offers a 1 / 5 w Labor Costs

1 Year for entire fridge

5 Year for Lining, Compressor, Condensor, etc

The GE is about $250.00 more and has the Water on the outside of the right hand door.

SO, it all comes down to brand reliability.

The Amana AFD2535DE is the parent model for the new KitchenAid II Series and is identifed as an excellent investment. Amana has been known as the best Mfr when it comes to fridges, however, I have seen many posts of Terrible KA Customer Service, Repeated Repairs and very unhappy customers who say they'd never buy a KA again. Most of my research has shown that it has been the side by side and built in refrigerators that have failed these customers.

On the flip side, Amana has also suffered from the same problems, though not consistently. Apparently there have been incidents of bad batches of compressors and defrosters as well as electronic thermostat failures depending on the model.

GE on the other hand has been known for flimsy quality applicances. They used to be wonderful but like everyone else, they just don't make them like they used to... I see just as many dissatisfied customer posts on the GE as I do the KA. I am hearing that GE is making strides in improvements in their quality, but not sure as to how much.

This is where I can use your help!

Would everyone who has either a KitchenAid or GE Profile French Door Refrigerator kindly answer the following questions so that I can make a final decision and purchase this plese!! I've made up my mind between these two, so although I appreciate the alternatives, I need to focus on just these 2. Thanks!

1) Which Model of French Door fridge do you have?

A) KitchenAid Architect I or II

B) GE Profile

2) Why did you decide on this particular model over another?

3) How long have you owned this fridge?

4) How many repairs have you had done to it?

5) What was the most costly repair?

6) On a scale of 1 (Bad) to 5 (Awesome): How would you rate your fridge?

7) If you had to do over again, would you choose something else and why?

Here's a post about someone's new GE fridge.... There are some not-nice things spoken here about GE, and it's typical of what we have heard over the years. Ge does, however, seem to make OK cooking appliances.

Most of the Monogram line, however, is mad by other companies.

I cannot say if GE makes the fridge you are interested in, or if it is outsourced.

We have the GE Profile FD and love it. It was our third new fridge in 6 weeks, as we went through two Bosch SxS models, neither of which would cool. The GE's been great...no issues at all, and because of the previous problems, I keep a fridge thermometer in it all the time...it holds its temp perfectly.

We've had it for two months (admittedly, not long) and I'd give it 4.5 stars. DH insisted we had to have water in the door, so that ruled out lots of FD models. My only (small) complaint is the water well that catches drips in the door is quite small, and it sometimes overruns onto the floor when it's full and we swing the door open. But that's a small problem and infrequent.

Would definitely buy it again...

We have a new (came out last yr) KA built-in SXS fridge. We like it a lot. I have noticed in the past month or so, that there is an occasional slight buzzing noise coming from the freezer/ice-maker (maybe when the ice-maker is in the process of making ice?). I don't recall hearing that noise before, but maybe I never noticed it. Otherwise, the fridge is pretty silent (except when the valve is opening/closing right after getting water or ice).

Maggie, nine years ago I bought the totally untested Thermador Freedom Series Columns. I picked them over the SubZero because they were the first to lift the interior and get rid of the ventilation panel overhead -- something I really hated about the old built-ins, but it also meant the bottom drawer wasn't nearly on the ground and in the freezer the ice was at a convenient height (had two kids in marching band -- we went through at least 2-3 gallons of ice every day during marcing season. Nine trouble free years later, I have no hesitation recommending Thermador (which includes Bosch, Miele and Gaggenau). And I got one of the first ones -- before the bugs were worked out. SubZero is the other top name for full size built in refrigeration with KA being a not to distant 2nd (but chek the opening of the drawers - required a more than 90 deggree open door back then - don't know if it's better now). For undercounter, it's SubZero, Perlick and maybe Uline.

There is a knocking now and then but since our previous fridge, a 19+ year old Kenmore badged Whirlpool, did the same, much worse and more often, I haven't given it much thought. It was louder before we placed the fridge cabinet back in place but now it doesn't even register with me unless I consciously make an effort to hear it make that sound. Since we're still within the 1st year of ownership, I should call for a service call and see what they have to say about it, just for the heck of it. We looked at the GE model, as well as many others including a Whirlpool since we'd had such good luck with our previous fridge (not one service call in 19+ years). Unfortunately, Whirlpool didn't offer a CD version. KA is now owned by Whirlpool (and Amana and a bunch of others) so we opted to stick with that appliance arm and not go with GE. According to Consumer Reports, GE does really well with ovens and cooktops but their rep slips down the list with fridges. But honestly, I felt as though we could have chosen our fridge with a dart throw since I could find bad reports on any fridge I researched. One other reason for our choice is that, according to my research, the KA is made in the US while the GE is made in Mexico. Not sure if this is still true. I couldn't find out where parts came from - both could come from overseas. If all else is comparable, we're trying to make an effort to choose appliances made, at least in part, in the US.

We have mostly GE Profile appliances, except DW & MW, and so far are very happy with them. Our DW is KitchenAid and our MW a Sharp MW drawer. When we moved into our house 13 years ago, we purchased all GE Profile appliances except MW...Refrigerator, DW, & Electric Convection Range. Our MW was a Sharp. We also purchased a GE, not Profile, washer & dryer. Our experiences were: Range...wonderful...still going strong when we demo'd in January of this year and is now being used by a family we donated it to. DW...not so good. That's why we bought a KA with the remodel. We have somewhat acidic well water and it corroded the DW. We then got a Maytag and it also was still working fine at demo and is also now being used by another family. Refrigerator...the icemaker did die, but the rest of the refrigerator was fine...we're keeping it as a 2nd refrigerator. New kitchen appliances: GE Profile Electric Cooktop GE Profile Warming Drawer GE Profile Trivection Double Ovens (top is Trivection, bottom convection) GE Profile CD FD Refrigerator w/water in the door Sharp MW Drawer KitchenAid DW The only appliance we've been less than thrilled with is the KA DW...we have to use the heavy duty wash to get consistently clean dishes. All the GE Profile appliances are working just fine.

GE is claiming to make this in house...so I have to believ them but there are plenty of similarities to the Amana/Jenn-air/Kitchenaid units out there, maybe an engineer jumped ship and designed these

Don't know about the French Door GE, in particular, but fwiw, we purchased a GE Profile bottom freezer with the full door on top a couple months ago. Other than the top door configuration being different, I think the models are very similar. So far, so good. It's cooled and performed very well. I have a separate thermometer to gauge the accuracy of the temperature, and it's been accurate so far. We have been very pleased with this refrigerator, and especially like the three drawer freezer set up.

amsunshine, is your refrigerator 36" wide or less?...because if it's less than that it is an LG sourced unit(not a bad thing, but they are different)

joboxes, yes, it is the 33" wide model. Thanks for the info -- I was actually told by someone at Sears that this model was made by GE, not by LG (Not that I think it would be a bad thing, either.) Ugh. It is frustrating to deal with misinformation! Sorry to not be able to help!

I've been "OBSESSING" with this through the weekend and it looks like it's going to be a coin toss either way. I am going to Sears tonight and finally make up my mind and put this to rest!

We have come to the same exact fork in the road,, GE French Door or Kitchenaid. We did own an LG refrigerator a couple of years ago, and had a horrible experience. It broke down in the first 6mo's and we had to wait over a week for parts. We swore to never buy an LG again. Now that I hear GE is farming-out to LG on certain models, I am leaning toward Kitchenaid. Which did you end up purchasing, and why?
