Gas ranges: KitchenAid Architect II vs GE Profile/Cafe vs ??
Comments (6)Not your models, but I had an early architect for which KA refunded me the purchase price and I currently have a ge profile. I'm critical by nature, so take that into account when reading the following. GE's grate design isn't the best or even second best. Where the tines open up between burners, small pots can drop through (the continous grates thing is lost on them). You can see the same sort of mistake on the Cafe. Their burner head design is awful. It actually takes LONGER to boil water on the 17k burner than the 12k because the diameter of the burner is so big it can't be used efficently for most pots. Conversely, the simmer burner runs too hot! KA's burners and grates are a better design and deliver more practical heat. However, the refund was because the burners kept melting the porcelain coating off the grates! Both the profile and ka have fairly low power, low efficency broilers. More expensive KA's have better broiling systems. The self-clean works well on both. My profile is two years old. The oven enamel has chipped off in places (naked and rusting are spots the size of quarters) where the racks go. I do not move the racks often. The bottom of the oven has other wierd defects including a 10" circle you can feel. After using both mfgr burners, I think you'd be best off with models that offered dual or triple ring burners. The cafe has at least one and a more powerful broiler. I would hesitate on the cafe because the ones I have seen in person look... well, they have fit and finish issues. Have you checked out the electrolux? It has much the same feature set as the cafe and just under $2k. Here is a link that might be useful: Electrolux...See MoreSubzero/Wolf vs. new GE Monogram
Comments (14)After reading endless posts and reviews here and elsewhere, we went for the Wolf. It is a pain to clean (even though they say it will be easy) - and the burners chipped my porcelain sink. Each grate must weigh 5 lbs., and the grill option grate must weigh 8-10 lbs. Maybe all the stoves are like this. The worst thing about this stove is the oven rack design. They don't glide easily, and are difficult to change out when the oven is cool, deadly when the oven is hot. Their designers missed the simple AND functional concept. Mechanically it is superior - temperature regulation and those sorts of things are engineered well. Flame control is good. It looks like a tank in the kitchen. Won't buy another one. Only two dealers in our area, service has been horrible. The first stove showed up looking like it had been hit by a train - someone had dropped a forklift load on it thinking we wouldn't notice. They also scratched our wood floors delivering it, and the replacement. I am a year plus trying to get a faulty stainless trim piece replaced - and I bought the entire extended warranty. Next stove will be LaCanche or KitchenAid. Even if they won't work as well (might work better, not sure), at least they will be more pleasing to look at every day. The problem with these sorts of things (Ranges, Hoods, HVAC, Refrigerators, Toilets, etc) is that you can't really run the full range of use before you purchase....See MoreGE Monogram vs Kitchenaid built in fridge?
Comments (2)my opinion on a not very large sampling is that the GE has better internal parts but that the KA has better fit and finish. GE has had a quality slipage in the last few years. They are built in house though. KA's units are made by their parent...See MoreMonogram fridge plug location vs SubZero
Comments (7)This "May" be a little late! I would stay away from GE Appliances due to: General Electric has sold its appliance business to Haier for $5.4 billion, a deal that will greatly expand the Chinese firm's footprint in the U.S. It is very likely that there will be transitional problems, possible inventory problems etc etc. I would certainly take the time to read reviews of GE appliances bought after about June of 2016. We too are debating whether to replace our Jenn-Air fridge with a Sub-Zero. The Jenn-Air had been trouble free, (No service calls) for 10 years. The icemaker did die after about 5 years but was widely available on-line, cheap ($135) and easily replaced by me, (Plug in). Unfortunately year 11 for the fridge has NOT been good, No compressor problems or expensive parts, but several calls for wild temp swings in Freezer and now a 2nd call for frost in freezer, and since the last "frost repair" we had to remove the top cover over the fridge to keep it from shutting down. Anyway, repair guy coming today, We giving him one last chance, replace anything that looks like it is or could be a problem, it breaks again it gets replaced by an SZ. We hate to replace it because of the fridge's wood panels, keeping it clean has been a "Non Issue" for 11 years now, WE hate to go back to Stainless Steel and the "Joy" of keeping that spotless!!! Why SZ you say? Simple Answer SERVICE!!!!! SZ has their own Service Dept. Jenn-Air does NOT have their own service nor does Whirlpool who Owns Jenn-Air, Kitchenaid, Maytag and who knows what else? So even though I searched extensively for the best service dept for my Jenn-Air Fridge, (Yelp Reviews, Yellow Pages Reviews, etc etc, and I probably found about the best there is as far as Jenn-air Service goes! Buttttt, Here is the way the company I picked, services Jenn-Air appliances. First You call them, it can take up to a week to get a return call, by the guy that is going to do the actual service. You describe "IN DETAIL" what the problem is. Still He comes out several days later and has a "look see". He then orders the parts, which usually takes another week, then returns with the parts and installs them. All this time the fridge is malfunctioning!!! Fortunately, being a "Techie" (Electronic Engineer), I've been able to keep the fridge running well enough to preserve the food. I removed the cover over the electronics to keep them cool, manually defrosted the freezer, removed a shield in the freezer so ice could not build up on it and block evaporator fan, turn power on/off many times, etc etc. Anyway tired of it , so I'm hoping , first of all The SZs does not break, 2nd, if it does , service will be prompt and parts needed replace on the FIRST SERVICE CALL, not the 3rd call or so !!!
