GE Profile vs Jenn-Air Advice Needed

We are in the process of choosing appliance for new construction. For the Double Ovens, MW, Cooktop, and Dishwasher, all in SS, we are down to the 2 choices, one company for all the appliances. The GE would be about $400 less and we generally like the looks/features of the GE appliances more. However, we have a GE RF and DW now (not Profile) and they have both had service issues, so we need to consider that considering if we chose GE, all the appliances would be that (not Frige, buying later). What are your opinions of the 2 brands for value/reliability/ etc. Thanks

Since WHirlpool took over Magic Chef/Maytag/Jennaire, they really haven't known what to do with the JennAire line, especially the JennAire Pro line--which would be equivalent to the GE Monogram line. And, their lesser featured JennAir lines are simple rebadged Maytags, but with more of a price premium paid for the virtually identical merchandise. JennAire probably has twice the service calls that GE does, and half the customer service, if that.

I'd choose the Profile, or better yet, the Cafe line package. Cafe generally has slightly better features, and not that much more money.

We have mostly GE Profile appliances, except DW & MW, and so far are very happy with them. Our DW is KitchenAid and our MW a Sharp MW drawer.

When we moved into our house 13 years ago, we purchased all GE Profile appliances except MW...Refrigerator, DW, & Electric Convection Range. Our MW was a Sharp. We also purchased a GE, not Profile, washer & dryer. Our experiences were:

Range...wonderful...still going strong when we demo'd in January of this year and is now being used by a family we donated it to.

DW...not so good. That's why we bought a KA with the remodel. We have somewhat acidic well water and it corroded the DW. We then got a Maytag and it also was still working fine at demo and is also now being used by another family.

Refrigerator...the icemaker did die, but the rest of the refrigerator was fine...we're keeping it as a 2nd refrigerator.

New kitchen appliances:

GE Profile Electric Cooktop
GE Profile Warming Drawer
GE Profile Trivection Double Ovens (top is Trivection, bottom convection)
GE Profile CD FD Refrigerator w/water in the door
Sharp MW Drawer
KitchenAid DW

The only appliance we've been less than thrilled with is the KA DW...we have to use the heavy duty wash to get consistently clean dishes.

All the GE Profile appliances are working just fine.

I've had the same problem (temp fluctuations and not holding the set temp) as described by the original poster (Avian) with my GE Profile Arctica of about the same age. I believe I have helpful information to offer. I had a couple of service calls by the tech who was recommended by the appliance specialty dealer where we bought the fridge. After several visits without success he diagnosed a bad main board. He ordered a board and replaced it. It worked better for a while, but still would not hold the set temp. Eventually I decided to bring in a genuine GE repair tech despite the $90 travel fee (in addition to any labor and parts charges). My thought was that the "real" GE tech might have specific knowledge about the problem. Well, it turned out he did. I can't say the board did not need to be replaced, but that wasn't the basic problem. It turns out that there's a unit in the top rear of the refrigerator side (against the back wall behind the center light) that is the culprit. This large molded plastic unit has (inside) a small "door" that opens and closes to allow cold air from the freezer unit into the refrigerator side. Basically the fridge works by sending cold air into the freezer, then this door opens and closes to bleed enough cold air from the freezer to the refrigerator side to maintain the fridge temp. That "door" was broken. The GE tech went right to the problem (he seemed to have seen it before), showed me the broken door, and replaced the molded unit containing the door. It was expensive (of course) but the tech showed me the price then cut it in half for me. He also fixed the ice-maker line (which had basically disintegrated) and cleaned out the coils (though they weren't too bad). Total cost was about $400 (but new higher end fridges were about $3K). Now (a few months later) it holds the 0 to 1 degree freezer temp and 38 or so fridge temp. Hope this is helpful.

I went with the Profile double-oven gas: here are my reasons. I like the smaller-size top oven for daily use, and the lower oven will only be used on occasion, so I'm ok with its location. (There's no room for a wall oven in my tiny kitchen -- and I have no plans to tear out cabinets and rearrange.) I'm a good cook, and I honed my skills on low-end domestic ranges because that's what was available: I don't need a commercial range to cook what I like, and I'm too busy with other aspects of my life to change my cooking style now. I also prefer not to deal with "pro" level BTUS and the ventilation complications they might add. I also am not willing to give up self-cleaning ovens -- which puts many pro-style ranges out of contention. I liked the slide-in setup and the angled control-knob location on the Profile, so that, and the price advantage, led me to choose it over the Cafe. Re: price, I bought mine from a local dealer, and I got the price down a bit by asking them to meet the ajmadison.com price. They didn't quite get there, but I was willing to pay a little extra for local sales/delivery/service reliability. Everyone's situation is a little different, but I found that the Profile slide-in fits best with my kitchen and the way I use it.

We love our Jennair slide in gas range. It is 2 years old and is a joy to use. I have used the selfclean feature many times and it works as advertised and no problems with the electric. Convection works great and fan is so quiet sometimes I think its not working until I open the door to check. I dont know the model # off hand I have the standard 4 burner with the oven on top and the warming drawer underneath. Use the warming drawer often. The sealed burners are easy to clean and the stainless is so easy to wipe clean.

I am not sure why you are getting zero response to your question. I too am having a difficult time deciding between two brands. My request for advice wasn't answered either. So without the benefit of others sharing their experience the best way to decide is probably side by side comparison. List the pros and cons of each as you see them and perhaps one will stand out more than the other. I don't have gas but I do have a GE convection wall oven and a GE cooktop. The cooktop has had to have the elements replaced three times in the 8 years I have owned it. The convection oven has had fan issues from the get go. First the fan in the oven started sounding loud and was fixed. Now it has noise coming from an internal fan and you'd think a plane was landing in the kitchen. So, Jenn Air, with it's extra features may be worth the extra expense if it holds up better than the GE. I'd check their repair history. Good luck with your remodel and enjoy your new kitchen!

I replaced my cook-top (5 burner gas), wall oven, and dishwasher 3 years ago. . . all Jenn-Air. Absolutely no problems.

In the house we had (briefly) before this one we bought new Jenn Air appliances when we moved in - Aug. 2006. We had to get the fridge fixed right away. It was a french door bottom freezer model.

The water dispenser froze. A tech came out a couple of times but it never really worked properly. We had to keep it warmer than we liked if we wanted filtered water.

We had a problem with the dishwasher after about 9 months. something came loose inside and the thing started making a horrible noise. A repairman came out and fixed it. It was fine after that, but we sold the house and the appliances after a year and a half so not sure how the things are holding up over the long term.

We had also bought the OTR microwave and were a little disappointed to find out the replacement light bulbs for the thing cost $52.00.

When we were looking for appliances this time we did not consider Jenn Air.

We have Jenn-Air and haven't had any problems with them (well, except the time my nephew stood on the oven door and busted the spring :-) The house had them when we bought it, so we swapped them out as we got new ones and mostly kept the brand.
