? Bill - now don't laugh

Not a bathroom ques. but need your opinion.

I know you are usually helping people fugure out how to make their tile last but I have the opposite problem. I need a way to add tile that is not permanent.

We have a fireplace that we will likely redo completely in about 5 years, but for now it has these hideous green tiles on the front. It is oak with the tiles sort in inset in the middle surrounding the firebox.

We'd like to apply new tiles over top, but I'm worried about doing anything permanent that will be difficult to remove when we go to redo it later on.

One thing I had thought about doing was cutting a piece of plywood to fit and tiling on top of that.

Any thoughts or suggestions?
