My MIL has passed away

It was quite sudden. We went and spent the day with her on Friday, and she was fine. On Sunday she went to the hospital, and by Tuesday she was gone. Very fast. Her kidneys shut down, and she was in a lot of pain. Her body was full of infection, from what they do not know. Because of the lack of kidney function, they coudn't do a die test. She was in lots of pain, so we kept her on morphine to make her comfy. Luckily, everybody, even the daughters in Montana, made it before she passed. We all watched her take her last breath.

It will definitely seem strange to go visit and not have her sitting in her chair. Sigh. You always know that it will eventually happen, but you are still shocked when it does.

Roger is staying with his father, who is lost and devastated. They were married 66 years.

Nan, sorry to hear about your loss. My mom died six years ago and nary a day goes by that I don't think about her. I like to think our Moms become our guardian angels and that our relationships with them aren't ended by death, but only changed.

Thank you all for your heart felt thoughtfulness. It is so hard to lose someone. Such a void is left. I remember when we all used to hang out together at her house in Portland. We were all hairdressers by then, and worked around town at different shops. Marcella was always thin by nature, and she would always eat Twinkies to try and put on weight. She LOVED Twinkies. And they were affordable back in those days. Most people went to the kitchen for a glass of water, she would go and get a Twinkie. So often in fact, like a mother hen, her roomate would hear Marcella in the kitchen, and without even looking up say "stay out of the Twinkies Marcella." She could easily consume a box a day. But then have no room left in her tiny belly for some "real food." We dubbed her "Twinkie" ever after. One less flower growing in the garden in Portland Oregon today. Trin

It's not easy when it's sort of expected, but doubly hard when it happens so fast.

I'm so sorry to hear this. I know it must be so difficult on everyone left behind, but thankfully you got to say your goodbyes. Long term care or quick w/o warning, it's all bad. It all comes down to how hard it is to lose your parents.

So sorry to hear this Sherry. I feel so bad for your FIL. Sixty-six years was a very long time. He must feel as if he is missing half of himself. We are never ready to say goodbye to our parents.

Boo! Where have you been? We've missed you!
Well, the memorial sevice was today. Roger's dad is still having nightmares, so Rog is still staying with his dad.
It was a nice service.
One funny thing happened. When we planned the service, his father said he didn't want to do a luncheon afterward (Service was at 11:00). I tried to convince the family that people would be coming from a distance to pay respects, and the least we could do was feed them. I even tried to convince them to come to my house and I would feed everybody if he didn't want to do something. They aregued that it was his wish not to do a meal. I felt that they should have tried to make him understand that it was a good thing to do, that he did not know any better, but they all said they wanted to follow his wishes.
Well, last night at about 7:30 pm Roger called and said that his Dad decided he wanted a luncheon at his house. So he (Rog's Dad)went out and bought 2 lbs of shaved ham and 6 dozen buns and 3 dozen glazed doughnuts. Then, at the service, he invited everybody that came to his house for lunch. I almost cra**ed my pants. I sent my daughter to the store to buy a bunch of salads, another sister ran to the store to get more shaved ham. He truly had no idea. Heck the 2 lbs of shaved ham would not have fed his own kids (6 plus spouses and their children) let alone everybody at the funeral home.
LOL. He was clueless. And there ended up being about 60 people in his tiny house with nowhere to sit and eat.
Oh, and only one doughnut was eaten, LOL.

He was confused....and how would he know how many people 2 pounds of shaved ham would serve?
I am glad the "stuff" is over....now to get "over it"...

Sherry, I've been lurking, just not posting much. I can empathize with your situation. Some friends of ours just lost their Mom. One widow, 2 bachelors & 1 daughter and none of them cook. I'm sure 2 lbs of ham sounds like a lot when you don't cook. I'm glad you were able to scramble & get things together. I'm so sorry once again for your loss

Sherry, I am so sorry to hear this sudden loss. I can't imagine what your FIL will do without her. Knowing a little about what you and Roger did for them, is this going to create even more dependence on you both?

Ah, Sherry, I'm smiling at 2 pounds of shaved ham and 6 dozen buns. I'd have stopped at the donuts and coffee.

Still, I know you, so I have no doubt that it all got pulled together and done. I'm also certain that you and Roger will be doing more for FIL. Don't forget to take care of yourself...
