Sounds like the same issue as on your other thread, so my reply would essentially be the same.

Other than that, I'll offer that depending on the grout color chosen, grouting can either disguise a lousy tile job or make it look even worse.

It's a lot easier to retile before grouting than after.

Can you post pics, though? I've seen posts where the OP thought something was awful but it turned out to be totally normal and/or something that would look different at another stage of completion. Let's hope that's the case here!!

However- maybe don't let him go further till you get some input??? Porcelain tile IS super hard to cut- because it's super hard :)- but you'd think he'd have the proper tools! And: if the shower niche wasn't waterproofed, that's certainly going to be a problem (unless, maybe, is it out of the way of any water, like high up on the opposite wall of the shower? Still: I would THINK it should all be waterproofed.)

Post some pics, and lets hope one of our resident tile experts will chime in!

If the cuts aren't right, it's not the saw's fault, or the tile's fault, or your fault, or Home Depot's fault. It sounds like the tiler has one of those whimpy saws that HD and Lowes sell for $80. But who's fault is it that he has the wrong equipment, or doesn't know how to use it?

Cutting and installing a diamond pattern is trickier than square "jack on jack" or running bond. I just did a backsplash using a diamond pattern, and at first I was miscuting 1 in 3 tiles. By the time I was done I was running about 1 in 6 bad. The tile was a little brittle. But that's why you buy extra tile.

I'm gonna let you in on a real insiders "trick of the trade" here.

You put the miscut tiles in the TRASHCAN, not on the WALLS.

Tell your tiler to get lost, and get somebody who knows what they're doing to come in and fix and finish the job. It may cost a little more, because you will probably have to pay the first tiler something. But you won't have to look at the mistakes every day.

I have a diagonal bias pinwheel pattern going into my sunroom on the new house as I write this that has 12x12 field tiles in white and 3x3 blue tiles for the accents. It is a really tricky pattern and a lesson in geometry.

If I were you I'd politely ask the tile guy "how much do I owe you for the work already done" and then go hire somebody else. But that's me. You need to be happy with what you're getting done. Uneven grout lines or bad cuts are not part of a tile job IMO.

When I order tile for a complicated pattern I figure at least 15% waste overage, not the standard 10%. When I had my sunroom on the current house done that tile shop only did 10% overage it too had a pinwheel pattern and the tile setter guy ran out of tile only a few pieces short of the field tile. The shop had to overnight the tile from Texas and they ate $100 worth of freight charges for one stinkin box of tile. I payed for the tile but they payed for the freight - they offered w/o me even asking.

I would go to a tile shop in your local area. I tend to not trust HD and Lowes for my contracting stuff. But that's only IMO. But I've been lucky and I have a great GC and his subs have so far been great.

I know I may come off harsh, but something my BF keeps reminding me is "you are the customer". I hate confrontation as much as the next person, but I try to do it in the politest terms and move on... Easy to say, hard to do. Good luck.
