My Latest Addition to my Hoya Collection: Imbricata
Comments (9)May I make a suggestion? Hoya imbricata likes it very wet. yes, this species grows in very wet conditions and then as it matures, it develops into a clinging vine that will climb even on cement. Start the cutting(s) in a hanging basket (six inch pot size is fine) and fill it with LFS mixed with perlite, orchid bark-fine grade. Ball the stem end for where you plan to insert into the media around a ball of LFS and plant=wedge this ball into your loose but wet media. This plant will develop roots quickly and then start making searcher vines seeking places to cling to. At this time, you can tie a piece of fern totem, redwood totem, cedar fence section, etc next to it. The clinging vine will start to make feeder roots attach itself to its host. Do not sever the connection right away. Instead grab some LFS around the base of the stems that have reached from the pot and slowly do a reverse air layer in making the new area grow roots into this wet moss. As soon as your host support is covered and roots are visible, you can make the severing from the pot. But keep this vines wet. They easily flower and side branch. I also recommend placing a nylon stocking filled with MagAmp and osmocote/nutricote and hang it above the totem, wood or stake and water and wet this stocking when doing so....See MoreCatalyzed finish
Comments (4)I think of varnish as being a type of finish (and finish as a generic term to apply to any treatment of the wood) but I'm sure woodworking people can steer you right on that. On the California CARB question, though, there are two sets of rules guiding this: one is the rule about what you can emit while doing work like finishing, which is what prevents cabinetmakers and others from using traditional catalyzed finishes in state. Like that link says, there are many CARB compliant finishes out there, though I'm not sure anyone can say with certainty how they will perform side by side in the long run, since most are relatively new. The second set of rules governs what cabinetry (and other woods) can emit themselves after they're finished, and that affects cabinets made *or* sold in California. A higher tier of rules just kicked in last month so I don't know if it knocked any players out of the marketplace, but in general the big companies have been watching this carefully. As of last year at the lower level of regulation, you could get most/all national lines here. Interestingly, some of the small shops we talked to were willing to bend these rules on the paint front (and paint with oil-based, which is not allowed for residential use). The guy we ended up with was adamant about not doing this as he could potentially lose his license for it, and that seemed very reasonable. So we used low VOC paint, and I do have to say that I really love that it doesn't smell at all, in contrast to the oil-based, which the PO used on our old cabinetry. Very resilient/easy to clean, but still stinky months later. So there are upsides to being CARB-compliant. ;) HTH!...See MoreI'll Show You Mine if You Show Me Yours Mon Feb 2
Comments (12)Some folks climbing the steps at Mayan archeological site in Guatemala. Notice that each step is about the height of an average-size adult's knee. Try it out; it's like stepping onto the top mattress of my bed. It is difficult; particularly when you have to do it again and again....See MoreMy latest puzzle.
Comments (3)Shelgal I do buy a few at WAl-Mart but get most of them at rummage or garage sales. This one was in a ten puzzle all in one box. I think it did come from Wal-Mart but a long time ago....See Morekittywhiskers
