What would I need? Wireless question....

I have a Windows '98 HP computer....what would I need to hook it up wireless so that I can use my high speed with that computer? It doesn't have a wireless card..are they expensive and are they hard to install. Then..I assume I would need a router...are they expensive and are they hard to install :o) I just got high speed and I realize now how I had been living in the Dark Ages. Am I smart enough to tackle a job like this, I wonder? How to get started?

Oh my..never mind...I was just reading the "hacker" post below and couldn't even follow half of that..after a while, I quit concentrating on it, though (above my head). I guess I'll just use that old computer for crafts and such...

Don't be afraid because of another thread, use it to move forward in a more aware and enlightened fashion. A 4 port router can be had for$40 and up and a wireless network (NIC) card can be had for the same amount.

Installing the NIC card takes 5 minutes. Connect the router to your incoming Cat5 cable. Follow the instructions that come with either piece of equipment. It is not difficult, just a little quiet concentration and you will be set to go.

Your existing computer can remain hard wired.

Terry, I looked around in bios - entered several places but never found "Wake on Lan..." It's a little scary in there! :) RC, I checked for scheduled tasks and found nothing listed that named any software on my computer. I wasn't that concerned about Vista waking up as I was that someone had broken through my security. It doesn't sound like anyone thinks that has happened, so I'm greatly relieved. Thank you. Zep, my computer automatically goes to sleep if I don't do it manually. I never know the best procedure to follow - shut the pc down or keep it on all the time! Thanks, everyone. dbags- Just to be clear for you: 1. Right now your DSL goes from the wall to the DSL modem to your computer. 2. You will now modify the system by unplugging the cat5 cable from the back of your computer, and plugging it into the Linksys router; then you have a second cat5 cable that will go from the Linksys to the back of the existing computer. All you're doing is inserting the Linksys router so that it can take the signal from the DSL modem and split it up to more than one computer. All this should be very clearly described in the Linksys instructions, including the step-by-step sequence of installing the new router software and making the physical conections. Once this is completed, you will have the capability to connect up several more computers with cat5 cable and/or several wirelessly as well.

The desktop probably has a wired network card that is currently connected to the DSL Modem (GT701). Disconnect that. The GT701 hooks up to the phone line. The TEW-633GR connects to the GT701 by a network cable. Connect the WAN port on the TEW-633GR to the connection on the GT701 where the desktop used to connect. Connect the desktop to one of the LAN ports on the TEW-633GR. There should be some sort of setup for the TEW-633GR. I don't know the exact steps you'll need to take, but there's probably a setup routine in the manual you can follow. I would suggest that you do the following: Change the SSID on the TEW-633GR Change the admin password on the TEW-633GR (and make a note of it) Set up the TEW-633GR to use encryption, preferably WPA set up the wireless on the laptop to use the same WPA settings as the TEW-633GR I've done this a lot, so some of these things seem simple to me and I've probably skipped steps. Not sure about the Lexmark, but the wireless HP's have a Network Setup Wizard that is accessed from the front of the printer that works similarly to Windows. You set up an Ad Hoc (without router) network and seek the available networks...it finds the nearest, you select your network (his laptop) and finish. Much easier than it sounds. There should be step by step instructions with screenshots on the CD or in the paper manual. Pam

I don't know about cards, but the Linksys routers sell for about $49 at Walmart, $69 through my cable company. The instructions are very easy to follow with step by step pictures. Call the router company if you have any problems, they will walk you through it. Have a pad and pencil ready to right down pass words and names.

My Netgear wireless g router cost me $39. It was very easy to install, and I have had it in service for about two years with no trouble whatsoever.
