Home wireless network questions

Right now, I have an office computer, printer, scanner etc all located in my home office with internet connection via cable through a modem which they (ISP=Comcast) provided. Now I would like to add a second computer which I can use at various other locations in my apartment. It is my preference that this computer be a desktop on a rolling cart and not a portable and that it be networked wirelessly to my existing system. What I know is that I will need A router where the cable comes in and a NEC card in my new computer. Here are my questions---

New computer will be Vista and the existing is XP, any problems?
Can I get the cable modem and router in one component and save renting the modem from the cable company?
As a luxury, I am thinking of a wireless keyboard for the new computer that operates using a radio signel (2.4 GHz). Will this interfere with the operation of the wireless network?
Is it safe to assume that my existing computer can still be hard wired (to the router I guess) for internet (no NEC required)?
Will I have any problems file sharing, device sharing (all wired to existing computer) or setting up a remote desktop connection with my existing computer?

I have a wired desktop and a wireless laptop, with router and Bell Sympatico supplied modem.

Definately not an expert so get other opinions, but here's my 2 cents worth...

1. don't know

2. I would think you would need to use your cable company's modem-don't know for sure though.

3. My destop uses a wireless keyboard-no problem there.

4. My router has wired and wireless capabilities for my hard wired desktop and wireless laptop.

5. Your router set up will allow for file sharing, although I do not have that set up on my system.
Device sharing-probably
Remote desktop-I don't know.

Everything will work like you expect. With possibly the exception of the 2.4ghz keyboard, I dunno. Seems sometimes that can cause problems for some with the router, sometimes not. So it may affect your whole home network.

I had a 2.4 cordless phone that worked great with my wifi, but occasionally my connection would get stuck and a reboot of the router would fix it. Only used that phone a couple of months and thats the only time period the router had to be rebooted occasionally. So it more than likely was the problem.

Suprised your modem isnt already a router/modem. Might ask comcast if you can buy one from them,, most isp's have special pricing for customers. Usually cheap!

this is why I suggest always taping the passkey to the router and the wifi to the bottom of the router. You might try resetting the router to default and go through the configuration again, have you tried first unplugging the router from the power and let it set a few minutes then plugging it back in? that is always the first thing to try. I would shut down the pc, unplug the modem and router, wait a while, plug in modem let it get fully established, plug in router let it get fully established, then boot pc an see if it seems to hold better.

Zep - I have 3 devices in my network list: 1) 1394 net adapter 2)intel 82566mm gigabit network connection (this one I was able to get an updated driver - but on my network connections, it still shows as local area connection - "network cable unplugged,fire..." and I'm not able to click that and get the rest of the sentence. if I click it it just gives me the name of the adapter. 3) intel wireless wifi link 4965AGN The first and third ones say they are connected and firewalled. I believe that this last wireless 4965AGN is the one that has problems and gets repaired. I could be wrong about that. The LAN one I think has always been unconnected/unplugged. I don't know what that's for or if I need it. Is that my wired internet connection? Thanks. Lynn. PS - if I go through network devices and select update drivers, it only offered updated drivers for the intel 82566mm gigabit network connection. Is there any point in googling for updated driver if this route indicate no new drives exist?

that's $35 please. If payed by the tenth, you can take a 2% discount. Router shouldnt be dropping wireless connection - probably dont need the data, try disabling any logging while youre in it.

Suprised linksys doesn't have a CD install that prompts you thru most of the settings and security setting. Mostly I find its not knowing the technical wording that confuses & scares people. Really not much to it. Pick a channel your neighbors not on... 1, 6, or 11 hopefully as they have perfect non overlapping radeo wave frequency. Change the 'ssid' = name of your 'radio station' to something other than linksys. Some check boxes for PSK & WPA = basicly the type of secure phrase it will accept. 128 bits is fine on encryption. Make a passphrase, I used my firstnamelastname. With a twist. Make sure you copy& paste that passphrase and get it on each computer before pushing the set button. Then add or change the login/password on the login to the wifi access point/router. Most of that just flows with, next page, next page in the routers wifi setup.
