Connecting 2 computers to 1 printer

Have a Kodak ESP7 printer that I want to connect 2 Dell computers to. What is the way to do this the easiest?? Any help appreciated! Thanks

I am running Windows XP on both computers! They are close to each other.

Easiest? Since they're close to each other, get a USB 2-port printer switch (search "usb printer switch") and two appropriate length USB A-to-B cables (or whatever the switch needs). Load the Kodak drivers/software on both PCs, and you're done. $20-30 depending if you have the right USB cables.

Yes, you can also take advantage of your wireless network, XP printer sharing, and a few other options, but without knowing more about your network, wifi setup, and/or your comfort-level for trouble-shooting connectivity issues, I'd stick with the switch.

okay, okay okay! I'm an I D I O T ! lol.. I called office depot and they said they had them. Well, I've spent 1/2 hour THREE TIMES looking around for them. They are NOT with the copier paper! I have been spending my time looking around all the "specialty papers".. glossy photo paper, glossy card stock.. etc.. it is with overhead projectors! AACCCCCCCCKKKKKKKKKKK! lol.. thanks! thank you Arsty! lol I went to office depot and bought there brand as it is WAY cheaper! lol....

Ellie if you only have anti virus you are at risk. I would suggest you get Malwarebytes and SUPERantispyware, both of which are free. These require you to manually update and run scans but they only need doing every one to 3 weeks depending on how conscientious/nervous you are. I never leave my external hard drive connected to the computer. This is both for safety and economy. Connected it is open to attack and also runs all the time. If you have a factory built computer your power supply might be taxed to a degree unless your external drive is self powered. Most today are not self powered I believe. You wrote: If I can't bring my computer up ( that is called a crash or a blue screen) I install my recovery discs first. The CD drive works even if the computer has crashed. There is no real answer to this untill the catastrophic event occurs. You might get clues for days before the event to warn you. There would also be valuable clues in the event of a blue screen of death from the error message displayed. (BSOD) I assume you mean Best Buy replaced a defective hard drive with a new one? What was written on the labels of the disks from BB? That would be a clue as to what they are for. As I noted before recovery disks allow you to take your computer back to the new state it was in when purchased, a backup created on your external drive will return the computer to the state at the time of that backup. Any work saved in between would be lost. You can store your data on the computer itself and back it up to the external drive for protection. Always a good plan to have data you do not wish to lose saved in 2 locations Outlook is generally a part of Microsoft Office although I understand it can be bought as a stand alone program - quite expensive too. One would presume Cobian Backup came with your Go_Flex drive. It is good that you ask these questions but be sure to allow yourself to enjoy the benefit these things can bring you. A computer is only as good as the person sat in front of the keyboard. Urlee and Cat_ky I have no issues with anyone owning more than one computer, I have 6 and all working yet I live alone. But to purchase another computer "just in case" seems rather more than odd to me and a complete waste of money for an item that keeps becoming out of date with alarming regularity. Don expressed it very wisely I think.

I can certainly sympathize with your situation...I have been without a printer for many months now because the ink cartridges are so expensive. I have a Canon Multipass 550 which has been a lifesaver in the past...being able to fax, copy and print...then when you do breakdown to buy one...install it and it still says empty cartridge, you really want to scream. But get this...the cartridge isn't the problem...it's the print head...to the tune of $50 or so and this is the third time I have replaced it and lord only knows how many cartridges were full before I wised up! Now get this....those print heads can be washed in your kitchen sink, dried on the counter and reinstalled...I sure am glad I saved the other two, i'll try that next time! But, now...I can't get the printer to print everything on the page....it prints one or two lines of the document, then skips a good paragraph size area and picks up the print again......any suggestions! and of course, it doesn't help that the manual is online and no hard copy is provided...I'm ready to do the old uninstall/reinstall thing and see if that helps! Technology sucks....here today, obsolete before noon the next day! and it wasn't a cheapee either...about $250- $300 smack a roos 2-3 years ago! Even with the cheapees....you spend a fortune on ink, that's were they make the money i guess! So what do I have to lose if the washing dosen't work......blank pages! Keep in mind the scanner on most(all?) All-in-one (AIO) is only 300 dpi, not the best for pictures. The printer has much higher resolution, I'm sure (Haven't looked). I have had two Lexmark AIO units. My latest has a flat bed scanner, copies, prints, faxes, guess that's a 4-in-one. I have had good experience with Lexmark and their ink cartridges are easy to refill, saves $$ if you're into that stuff. Not all printers are equal, we also have an Epsom and it is very difficult to re-ink.

If both PCs can access the internet, they're then already "networked". No reason to run a second wire.

Setting up a printer to share over your existing setup would cost nothing and take less than 5 minutes of time if you can follow instructions. I'd try that first before spending any money. You can use the "run extra wires" approach as a last resort if the easier/cheaper way doesn't work for you.

Post back if you'd like guidance, many of the folks here can give you the necessary instructions.

Ha, no other takers.

Try the following. First, I'll assume the two PCs have distinct names and are connected to a router (any combination of WIFI, ethernet or both). Also I assume both have the needed drivers installed for the printer.

Pick one PC to be "home base". Connect the printer to it and then install the printer as a network printer as follows:

Control Panel
Printers and Faxes
Add a Printer
(Printer Wizard Starts)
Next
Choose "A network printer or a printer attached to another computer" - Then Next
Choose - Browse for a Printer - Then Next
You'll See the printer, highlight it. Next
Choose yes to "Do you want this as default printer"
Done.
STOP HERE

Before leaving this PC, go back to the Printers and Faxes page under COntrol Panel, Highlight the printer you just added, click on Share This Printer, then give it a name and then OK.

Go to the Second PC, repeat all the same steps. When doing Browse for a Printer, you'll see the printer on the other PC, choose that and continue until you reach STOP HERE.

You should now have a networked printer. If I goofed something up or it doesn't work, I'm sure you'll let me know.
