Annie and Elery's Reception

I made it to the reception! I didn't say anything ahead of time, but had been planning on attending all along. Sherry (Sheshebop) and her DH made it also. Peppi was planning on the surprise also, but as you probably already read, she had major water problems. Kim and I had a really good time but were disappointed that the DJ didn't get peed on. LOL

Here's some of my pic's. Sherry is on her way East and probably won't be able to post anything for 2-3 weeks.

It was a great night and I'm so darned happy for Annie and Elery. They go so well together and you can just feel the love.

But for us it was important to think about the origins of them --- why they got to be traditions and whose traditions they are. In many cases some things that people think of are long and important "traditions" turn out actually to be pretty recent, at least in the context of how long folks have been getting married! (The white dress thing was started by Queen Victoria, for example. And the couple processing *together* as we did turns out to in fact to be a very old tradition; in fact, even the current official Catholic ritual (don't know about any other denominations) gives several options, NONE of which calls for the groom waiting at the altar while the bride's father "gives" her away. But I LOVED exchanging rings --- the symbolism of eternity in the circle is lovely. And we had a unity candle, a lovely newer Catholic tradition. We wanted a toast (who couldn't use all the good wishes anyone can offer them?) but R. doesn't like champagne that much and a good one was beyond our budget, so we toasted with the local apple cider, available in both alcoholic and non-alcoholic versions. And so on. >> Elery thinks we should write our own vows. I wonder if "you're only second in my heart to my horse" is appropriate. (grin) After all, he IS working on that number one spot..... Hee, hee. Well, I think it is very good to keep him working on it! After all, he who is #2 tries harder. ;-) Vows are one place where we surprised ourselves. I am a professional writer and editor, and assumed that of COURSE we would write our own vows. But as we looked at the standard Catholic version, we found that it said pretty much everything we wanted to say. So we did end up going with "tradition" there, though I have heard some very lovely and meaningful own-written vows, too. We did draft a few words for when we exchanged rings, for which DH's first suggestion was [deep, menacing voice] "I have you now, bwah hah hah hah." I think he was a bit startled when I called his bluff and started to write that down.... ;-) I know you will do things just right for YOU, when the time is right. Gosh! Annie I felt like I was reading a Danielle Steele novel. She always has a crisis then romantic then another crisis and ending up romantic and everyone lives happily ever after!!! I loved reading about your trip and your blossoming relationship with Elery. I'm glad his family liked you so much, but I must say; how could they not? You look very pretty in the pictures too. Sorry about your head and Ashley's spider bite. OMG how awful. But it all ended up perfect!

Easy, easy recipe for the twists! Raspberry Twists 2 c. flour 1 c. butter 8 oz. cream cheese Mix and roll out to about 9" x 14" (I had to add a little more flour because my butter was soft). Spread with raspberry jam (or whatever you like). Fold into thirds so it's 3" x 14". Cut into 1/2" - 3/4" strips and twist them as you place on greased (or parchment covered) cookie sheet. Italian Beef Sandwiches. Very juicy, (read sloppy!) but so easy and delish. It's cheap, too, if you buy chuck roasts on sale. You braise the beef with garlic and onions, bay leaves, salt and pepper for several hours until the meat shreds, serve it hot with all its juices on Italian rolls or other hearty rolls. I'll be more precise with the recipe if you'd like, but that's about it. I guarantee a hit!

Oh yay! I'm glad you took pics, Nancy.

Darn if we didn't try to wing it, but DH got sent from New Mexico to Houston. Not really any way you can explain a stop in Michigan to the company as a "detour".

I'm here and I have pictures, but no time to post them right now. I got a call on Sunday, my step-father passed away. I've been with Mom, the funeral is on Thursday.

elery had to go back to be with his father, his stepmother is having a triple bypass tomorrow. She's 80.

Thanks for all the good wishes, I'd like to get back to my old boring life now but it doesn't appear to be happening....

Awwwww, Annie! It just seems like everything happens at once. And to top it off, right around all your festivities!

I am so sorry to hear about your step-dad! Thoughts and prayers once again on their way to you and yours.

I think after all of this you guys will need another honeymoon! And I am all for that!

Rats Annie, you need a break and can't seem to catch one. I was thrilled to see the wonderful pics that Nancy had posted, and boy do you and "city boy" look good together! All the food looks delish too, but the cake is just magnificent, you really managed to show the fondant who's the boss:-)

I am so sorry to hear about your stepdad, and poor Elery's stepmom too. Of course you would be with your mom at this time, and no doubt will be a great comfort to her as well. I will pray for Elery's SM to come through her operation safely and quickly. My strongest prayers and good wishes are being sent to you, dear Annie, for some peace and comfort during these very trying days. Please update when you can and take care of yourself and your groom. Damn how life happens...but it happens. Take care and know we are all with you.

Back for a minute to the party. Looks like you were all having a ball celebrating the wonderful happening. Wish I could have been there but we had a wedding in Ottawa to attend. Mind you I was thinking of both of you, along with my nephew and niece, and just how wonderful that love can come to us in so many ways and at so many different points in our life.

Oh Annie, I'm so sorry for all that you and Elery have to go through now. But your strength has already been tested so many times and even though you are separated at the moment you and Elery are there for each other.

I loved the photos and the story of your wonderful reception and share the thoughts of others that you two are soulmates.

You will all be in my thoughts and I wish you peace.

Darn it AB. I was about to ask, what was so funny in that first picture that caused Elery's reaction; you both appeared to be having the time of your lives. And then I got to your post.

I'm very sorry Annie, for the loss of your stepdad. It's unbelievable all that's happened for you and to you this year. I will keep the prayers going for you and your family.

How is Elery's stepmom doing after the triple bypass?

sol, Frances appears to be doing pretty well, she's worried about her hair and makeup and that's always a good sign. They are only allowing Elery's Dad to visit once a day, it's going to be a slow recovery since she's 80.

Since Elery's Mom passed away a couple of years ago and his Dad married Frances, a childhood sweetheart, about a year after that, I just keep praying that the poor guy doesn't have to lose another spouse so soon.

She's 80 and he's 84, they got married on Valentine's Day, 2006.

This is the first time I've been back to this thread and saw more misfortune for you and your family Annie. I'm sorry things are going this way for you and Elery. You barely had time to marry and breath before the house fell in you. Please accept my condolences on the death of your step-dad.

I'll have to say that is a very sweet story about Elery's Dad though. I hope his wife will be okay.
