How to use ccleaner without losing my setting?

I ran ccleaner before leaving town this past weekend. Now I notice that some of my settings are gone - like setting up firefox to send email through AOL, I think some of my bookmarks in the toolbar are gone (although not all). Could this be because I deleted important things? If so, what do I do to run ccleaner and not erase my settings?

On a separate note (but doesn't seem worth a separate thread), for some reason, this computer forum is now displaying in a larger font. This actually started a week ago, but I don't know what I might have done. I think some other sitea re larger as well, but the firefox tool bars seem the same to me.

I have never had a problem with CC deleting everything it finds.

Lynn, Ccleaner ran with default settings will not create the mischief you describe. It will remove your cookies but you can protect the ones you want, like the one here so you remain logged in.

Both issues may well be partly due to patch Tuesday last week when Microsoft doled out those update patches.

For some strange reason my computer has started occasionally rebooting while I am away. Plus when I close Firefox it removed my logged in status on the forums I visit regularly. Annoying to say the least! I allowed all patched other than SP3 but I also grabbed Zonealarm's Forcefield and installed the same day so I need to start some digging

Karen, if your family is anything like mine, until you lost your Dad, you hadn't seen a lot of loss or grief for someone. It's hard to watch it (and experience it!) I think I'd probably just call my Mom, if I were you, and ask her to your house to eat, to go out, to watch activities that the kids are involved in, etc. Let her know that it's okay to not be in the mood to do anything. Also let her know that you really WANT her to be involved in whatever your family is doing. My Mom has spent the night at my house two nights since my Dad passed away. Get this, I had to break my ankle and have surgery in order to get her to do that! LOL I kid her that having surgery is the only way she'll stay at my house overnight! LOL We live 80 miles apart and I call her everyday - usually twice a day. We've talked more by phone in the last four years than we'd ever talked in our lives. My DH and I and our kids and grandkids make it a point to at least spend part of every holiday at her house. She likes to stay home, so we go to her. I DO feel sometimes at her house, when everyone is there but Daddy, that there's the proverbial "big gray elephant" in the house that no one mentions. You know what I mean? Everybody is highly aware of the fact that he's no longer with us, but nobody wants to talk about it for fear of upsetting somebody else! Now, when it's just my Mom and me together, we cry (and laugh!) when we feel the need to. That's something else that I haven't thought to mention. Let her cry when she feels the need to cry. I guess you don't have to say a word, just be there for her. She and I both have talked about the fact that Fathers are the HEAD of most families. Then, as women, we both agree that the Mothers are the HEART of the family. Maybe you can reassure her in that way that she IS a vital, needed part. ((Karen))

What a timely thread! You know, I've been scaling back my time here on the forum because of my need to lose weight. I used to check in here at least 4 times a day, especially if working. Well, I was isnpired to try many of the recipes on here... some of them not so healthy. Now I check in about once every 3 days or so. It took a lot of self control! Sadly, I did have to curb my passion for baking in an effort to lose weight. I haven't made any sweet treats in about two months... I think... I can't even remember the last time I baked something. I've wanted to several times, but had to resist the temtation. My stand mixer is now growing a layer of dust... he gives me the evil eye every time I walk by, feeling neglected I'm sure. I've also been drinking only water at work and home (maybe an occasional glass of 1 percent milk, but nothing sweet). I've been forcing myself to exercise 3 times a week for 45 minutes (on the Gazelle glider or riding a bike that a co-worker gave me). I've gone from going to fast food restaurants while working 3 times a week to not at all. If I'm at work and didn't have time to pack a lunch, I'll run out to my car and get a granola bar (I keep a stash under the seat). I obviously need to do more because the scale isn't moving. The Jack Daniels sampler platter at TGI Fridays has been calling my name for a while now, but I've been good about resisting lately. I LOVE it, and like to get it once a month. Haven't had it for a month or so now. The last time I got it, I split it up into two meals and only ate half at at time. That's a tip I've learned on this forum and have been using it quite a bit lately. A couple days ago, I was cleaning out some closets and got hungry. I was tired from the physical work, and it was emotionally draining to see the memories of the past as I was cleaning. I wasn't really hungry, but I still wanted to eat. I drove to Long John Silvers to place a big order to take back home and feast on. While I was waiting in line to order, I realized that I was getting this food because I was upset or frustrated and not because I needed it! I scolded myself saying, "Bobby, you just spent 10 minutes sewing a button back on your pants that you've popped off with your gut, and you're in line at Long John Silvers! Something is wrong with that!" I got back in my car without ordering, went home and made a salad with some boneless skinless chicken pieces on top. OK... Most of my response hasn't been about cooking, so let me get on topic for a second! I did try a new thing in the kitchen that helped me with overeating. I deciced I wanted to try to make some homemade peanut sauce and fried tofu. I bought all the ingredients (incluidng peanut oil and rice vinegar which I'd never used before). Well, I don't love tofu so I will never over eat it! The peanut sauce was a little bland, so I added a lot of red pepper and made it really spicy. I'm not big on spicy foods, but I liked the sauce spicy! I just coudn't eat a lot of it. I've also read that spicy foods boots the metabolism, so double bonus. Can't handle a lot of it at a time, and it boost metabolism! It could be a good thing to start a support group here for people who want to lose weight... With the great collection of people here, I'm sure we'd encourage each other.

(((Chubby_rat))) Okay...I'm coming public here -- I had lap band surgery 2.5 years ago. I'm about halfway to goal, not a poster child. And I'm now trying to get my butt in gear again. There are additional reasons that weight loss is recommended before lapband surgery -- a lot of fat settles around the liver and stomach area, and a good weight loss directly prior to surgery can make it easier for the surgeon to get in there, and also easier healing for you. After all, with laparoscopy, there's not a whole lot of room to maneuver. Your insurance will come through -- it's your doctor who is taking the cautious path. BTW, there are other doctors who are not as stringent about the pre-surgery weight loss. The nutritional visits are critical since your consumption will be so much less and it will be hard to get all the protein and vegetables in. The best part is that the lap band really, really does curtail hunger. But it's also not a panacea -- bad habits will return unless you're vigilant. And exercise is paramount. Again, I'm no poster child, but I know many bandsters who are. The band can be a PITA due to the saline fills required. Have you asked your doctor about other alternatives -- there are a couple of new ones available -- if the vertical sleeve had been available at the time I might have gotten that instead. Oh @groveraxle you made me smile so much. @suezbell, yes. I have had a cluttered brain for so long trying to figure out how to decorate a house and feeling stumped with difficult layouts. Funny you should say that about the credenza beds for the dogs. I showed that design to my husband before he made these. It’s like how it is with everything though. We get what we need in the present moment and not think about whether that will work for us later down the road. The amount he spent in materials was ridiculous and the crazy thing is they don’t even sleep in them all the time. My flooring is next because they have torn them up with jumping in and out of the beds or recliner chair (which used to be by the window) to look out the window. I wish I would have thought more about furniture before investing in the sectional, but that was the only way at the time I could think to divide the rooms.

owbist I saw some other posts about the forcefield causing problems, I know it was being given out free for a short time.
you might check some of the forums to see what is being said, I will take a look again and see if I can find it.

Owbist - I think you are right. I did not install those updates until just before I left for the weekend. That is probably what caused the changes. Will those updates keep removing settings I want - or was that a one-time disruption? Or is there an update I should uninstall?

Also, how do I protect my cookies (which ones would I want to protect) when running ccleaner?

Lynn, I have not found any specific MS update to cause my problem - yet. What I have found is that having to log in with each visit is specific to Firefox only. Then it struck me, I updated to version 3 a couple of days after the MS updates. My Internet Explorer and Opera still have me logged in here and elsewhere yet I have not used either for a long time.

Regarding protecting your cookies.
open Ccleaner
click Options on the left side
click Cookies
Now you should see a long list down the left side of the window. Look for thsgardenweb.com - gardenweb.com and ivillage.com and click each to highlight and use the arrow to move them to the right side. Any other site you visit can also be moved over there.
Close the window when you have finished and those cookies will be protected when you use Ccleaner.

Ravencajun, I do not think Forcefield is my enemy here, I stopped it running with no effect on having to log in on each visit to Firefox. Seems maybe I need to dig around FF3, I had read we are being forced to update very soon so decided the time was right - perhaps not, haha.

Yes, I got Forcefield on the free for a year deal. Not sure I will keep it though as it might be slowing me slightly. Anyway I can always try the free Sandboxie if I feel I need that kind of protection.

My Avast became corrupt about 3 days ago and I got a virus so even that causes me a bit of concern. Re-installed Avast and ran a full scan, plus a full scan with Superantispyware and an online scan at Bitdefender so I am comfortable there should be no outside 'influence' on my machine.

Thanks for your input, I may read more on Forcefield before removing it.

I went to ccleaner and moved the gardenweb cookies over. I think I need more insight, though. What do cookies do? Every time I think I have an understanding of cookies, I'm faced with a new situation that shows me that I don't grasp it yet. I'm not sure if I want to keep cookies for sites I visit like craigslist, ebay, amazon, AOL? Do those cookies help me navigate the sites more quickly?

I did move the gardenweb cookies over, but I did not see an option to save those settings. Does that mean that each time I run ccleaner, I have to move over the cookies I want to keep?

Owbist- if your problems are from Firefox 3, then I don't think our problems are the same. I just started using Firefox for the first time 15 days ago - and went straight to Firefox 3. These changes I found occurred after the first 1 1/2 weeks of usage on firefox.

guess I'll redo my settings and see if the computer keeps them or not.

I updated to FF3, too, and several days ago, over a period of two or three days, I had a lot of trouble with logins, having to log in over and over for different sites every time I started up FF. It was especially bad for Hotmail and G-mail. In Hotmail, I kept telling it to remember my username and password, but it never did. It was maddening.

Finally, I found that in FF, Tools>Options>Privacy was set up to keep 3rd party cookies only until I closed FF. I changed that to "Keep until they expire," and lo and behold, no more sign in problems. I don't know how it had gotten set up that way. FF? My bad? Gremlins? Anyway, it's now fixed.

I had thought of getting it too since it was free right now but not liking the sound of it, plus sandboxie is known pretty well and liked.

Lynn, cookies are tiny files stored on your computer by all sites you visit. They can be helpful, they can be a pest. They track your movements and report back to the site. Things like how often you visit, pages visited and things like that. While you were protecting your cookies you may have noticed cookies from a lot of advertising sites, these can be third party 'phone home spies' that your firewall stops from reporting on your movements.

Just moving those cookies to the right side has protected them, there is no 'Save' button.

Biwako, thanks for your input on the log in issue. That never worked for me but it gives me confidence to keep searching to stop the aggravation.

I think the base line of thought here is not settings but rather preferences. When you sign on and store your log-on at a site as I did here, a cookie is generated to maintain your log-on status for future visits. If you create a personal "My Yahoo" page a cookie retains your preferences.

Let's not create a renewed panic about cookies. Cookies in general are not obtrusive and are meaningless. Many times a cookie will be used to make your pages load faster. Yes, there are tracking cookies but for gosh sake they are far and wide just commercial entities. They are not big brother looking over your shoulder or some sinister plot to take over your system.

I have seen it here before where new users develop a big fear of cookies and begin dumping them daily. There have been in the past negative episodes related to "bad guy" cookies and there will probably be again. It is our duty as users to be informed and focus on the perpatrators specifically and not all cookies in general.
