We've had our Totos (Dartmouth, Plymouth) for several years now and, while they were a huge improvement on the builder-grade Crane models they replaced, they're not perfect. But what is? We've had to unclog them several times but that doesn't begin to compare with the almost daily problems we had with our previous toilets. We've also had to replace the flappers - once on each toilet. No big deal - we just keep an extra flapper ($10) on hand now. The impression I have from reading CR and others over the years is that other companies have improved their products and, as a result, you can probably find any number of good toilets out there now. Personally though, if I had to buy another toilet today I'd stick with Toto because they always seem to be on the cutting edge of toilet technology and everyone else has to work to keep up.

For what it's worth, this topic is timeless. Toto Drake is the model. They have short and tall, oval and round. Beyond that there are accessories for it. The best one has the features you want. I used to travel and work from hotels 5 days a week. At one time the hotel I was in was brand new with Toto Drake toilets. I liked them so much I ordered one for my house from a local plumbing supply house. When I went to pick it up they asked if I wanted to see the new American Standard Cadet III. I really didn't want to, but they had a demonstrator set up filled with golf balls. I tried it and changed my mind. One of the features I liked about the Drake was the antifungal and bacterial glaze. The Cadet III used the same glaze. They had rolled the Drake out to my car and I called them back in to exchange for the cheaper toilet. At the time the Drake was $409 and the Cadet III was $122. Since then I have bought 6 more Cadet III models for condos and houses we've moved to. It's the first thing I change. Until this house we moved into a year ago. It has American Standard Estate toilets. I'd never seen one, and after looking it up I knew why. $500 is way more than I would spend on a toilet. It has all the same features as the Cadet III plus nicer styling and a different flush wash through the bowl. Toto reinvented the low flush toilet in the late 2000s, but all the American manufacturers caught on quickly. They caught on so quickly that virtually everyone made a better quality toilet than Toto. I'm not certain what has changed since then, but the Totos are all up to the same quality standards as the rest. If you really want to pay twice as much to have a Toto, that's your business.

I just finished a remodel and opted for a Toto Connect + with a Washlet 550e which is the most fully featured washlet available. I skimmed the specifications for the Neorest just now and had read about it more extensively when selecting my new toilets and I don't see any advantage to the Neorest versus my system which is significantly cheaper. The new modern Washlet seat is significantly less engorged looking than the older bulky models. The Connect+ means that there is no separate water conection so there is only the standard water line plus the electrical connection. I opted for a skirted one piece Toto toilet which has great flushing capabilities as well as the Sana-finish which is supposed to ward off cleaning problems. I have NEVER had any issues in terms of anything adhering to sides. This is probably helped because there is a pre-mist function which wets down the toilet when I approach it and the seat rises. My seat automatically rises and is heated although since I live in Los Angeles and a cold tush is not one of my issues, I don't use that feature. In terms of actual bidet functions, it seems to have the same capability as the Neorest with the ability to have a forward function with a wide wash for woman's configuration :-). My toilet was one of the more expensive and pretty much resembles a Neorest since it has very sleek sides although it is a comfort height which I am glad of - not sure how high a Neorest is. However the final cost for both together was probably closer to $1500 - it was suppled through my designer and even with her markup, the trade discounted price was significantly lower than even the lowest discounted internet prices. Since I suspect a washlet mechanism will break down before a toilet needs to be replaced, I am glad that I have the ability to just install a new washlet down the road. I was never going to get a $5000 toilet (even assuming that it would have been cheaper with a discount) and am curious as to what the actual advantage of the Neorest is in terms of either functionality or even coolness as opposed to the Toto. As to the Neorest versus the Veil, I don't really know except that a good friend with many bathrooms installed some Kohler toilets and some Toto toilets and said that she wound up replacing all of the Kohler toilets because the Toto models were much better - I assume in terms of clogging and flushing.

I have been a long time fan of Kohler toilets. When we built our own house, I decided to give Toto a try, and used Toto toilets in the master and guest bedroom and Kohler in the powder. What I can tell you is this: something that many people either haven’t or won’t tell you is that the Interior shape of each bowl is quite different. Putting it politely, for women, the shape of the Toto bowl creates an odd up-spray, leaving the underside of the toilet seat quite messy. Take it for what it’s worth.
