What to wear? Please help - I can't decide!

Hey all

On Fri evening DH and I are going to a black tie fundraiser for the local Chamber Orchestra. It is actually the 50th anniversary, so it will be quite the "do" at one of our local country clubs.

Anyway, DH has dusted off his tux (and is VERY pleased that he can still button the jacket LOL) but that leaves me to decide what I am wearing. Here are my options:

1. Black velvet evening gown, high neck (picture a sleeveless turtle neck) where only the neck is heavily beaded in black. Not sure if it is too early in the season for velvet though it will be chilly (40's) on Fri night.

2. Black knit dress, rounded shallow scoop neck, sleeveless. The bottom of the dress has vertical rows of black beads that are different heights. Almost like a beaded city skyline along the hem.

3. Black velvet tank dress with a few extraordinary pieces of jewelry.

4. Black velvet long skirt, taupe shiny sleeveless top with a 2 inch wide band of silver beads around the neckline.

5. Black slinky long skirt with the above top.

6. I could get really wacky and wear a long raspberry sheath dress that is very low V-necked and has a high slit, but I don't have great shoes for it.

I have a dinner jacket I could make work with either of the long velvet dresses, it is a burned out fall pattern in black and very dark jewel tones. Or I can wear either a grey cashmere wrap (sort of casual though) or an ivory lace wrap with loooong fringe. When I have it on, the fringe reaches almost to my ankles in the back. It is just a little bit funky, so I'm not sold on it. Of course, I could go without a wrap - I tend to be "hot blooded" and am unlikely to need it until we are in the car on the way home.

I have black strappy sandles and several evening bags to choose from so accessories will not be a problem once I decide on the outfit.

Which of the above sound most interesting?

Will the taupe top (saythatfastfivetimes) coordinate with the dinner jacket you have in mind?? If so, I'd lean toward that outfit. Slinky or velvet skirt depending on how warm you thing it will be inside!!

Well... no. Unfortunately the jacket will not go with the top.

I am going to go dig through the closet and see if I have missed anything with potential....

Thank you SH! Those really do help me visualize how each would look. Thanks also for everyone who posted picks, I have a hard time visualizing things, which is why I'm having this current problem. I also agree with the person who mentioned the lighter colors not looking as good for as long as the darks. So many I've looked at that are lighter have dark streaking going on. I'd like to avoid that if possible. Dh says we should go more brown, but I like how the blacks bring out the grey tones in the stone. However, I do love the first mock up! I guess I need to decide which "look" I'm going for. I just don't know! I'm wanting an old world feel to it for sure. I was thinking the black walnut would be a good way to stay dark but still get the brown tones. But with that first mock up, it really says "old world" more than the black, doesn't it? I also was concerned about the roof looking busy, like it would compete with the stone in some way. Oh and the whole house will be done in the stone, if that helps. Here is another picture of the house with the stone on it and a black roof. These are the type of shingles we'll most likely be using, do you see any browns there that would work? Rachel, use the same roofing on your garage as the house. If you dont blend your new garage into what you have on the house, its not going to look like it belongs with your house on your property. Try to have siding, and roofing, and windows, all as close to the house as your can.

We moved to Germany (a few times) without known measurements. We lived in a 4-story duplex built in the 50's so the size was nothing like today's modern Eu standards. We brought a three seat and love seat and they fit. Many Americans brought their overstuffed sectionals that worked. What you REALLY need to consider is how they'll get the couch into the flat especially on a higher floor. If it can't fit through a window they'll leave it on the sidewalk. A sectional may be pushing the limits but not out of the question. If you buy something locally, you could sell it before you come back to the US. Don't stress. This is an adventure of a lifetime. Have fun! Stress over paperwork accuracy, passports, school requirements, not knowing the language (start practicing now).... but not taking a sectional. You have lots of things to deal with after this.

I'm personally not a fan of ORB. You could do black, brushed nickel, even a champagne gold might look nice if your particular slab has any goldish flecks in it... your best bet is to purchase a few pulls in a finish you are considering and see what you think of it in your kitchen.

You must have quite the bod to wear any of these!

I think it's too soon to wear black velvet. That's true winter fabric. So #2 or #5 with the #4 top. As for a wrap, just ask hubs to warm up the car ahead. Actually I'd wear it in the car and leave it there when you get out. Hopefully wherever you are going will be warm inside.

I tend to agree, too early for black velvet which always feels "holiday" to me. The other black focused outfits all sound great. The raspberry sounds fun, too. An excuse for some fabulous new shoes, don't you think? If you can skip the wrap, I would. Just one more thing to be bothered with inside. I'm always cold though!

Knowing you I'm thinking door number 3!!!

I think the extraordinary jewelery would be so you. Does the jacket work with that? I think the jacket sounds perfect and would work around that.

Too early for black velvet......
Slinky skirt and taupe top....and that means you need a new jacket or at least a shawl....thinking brownish, shiny silk with a fringe and lots of beads....

JHMO but anything YOU wear is going to be smashing!!
Those of you who never met her, Alexa is a knock out!!

I like option 3 as well. Its simple and elegant.
Perhaps treat yourself to a brown or even silver wrap. Of course pair gold jewlery with brown and silver with silver.

I saw tons of such wraps while prom dress shopping so maybe check out some plave like David Bridal or even the Golden Asp in Bensalem.

How are you planning on wearing your hair??

Depends on how they fit. I'd go for something that you can sit comfortable in and won't wrinkle on the backside. The best dress in the world looks silly when the butt gets all wrinkled. Certainly nothing that could get caught up in a folding auditorium chair. Layers would be a good idea as it sounds you will be jumping from warm crowded to chilly cold. A wrap would slide on and off your shoulders with less fuss then a jacket.

Thanks for all the great advice and insight. Lyra - you are spot on with the suggestion to choose an outfit that is "sit" friendly. No one wants to stand up and have diaper butt LOLOL!

My hair is so short right now I don't have a lot of choices so, weather permitting, it will just be blow dried under. Long gone are the days when I could put it up in a French Twist. If the weather is rainy (a possibility) then I will go with the drowned rat look LOL! I have very fine straight hair and even the slightest humidity will kill any "do".

BTW - what are the cough drops for - or should I ask Jessy? LOLOLOL!

Alexa, sounds like a blast! I would go with the raspberry dress. Black strappy heels would go fine with it or a good excuse to buy a new pair! Have fun!! Gina

Heck, I'm no good at fashion at all, but I agree with Lyra. Wear what fits best, feels best, and can stand up to sitting for a while and the changes in environment.

Other than that, I'd say go with the raspberry, just because it isn't black, LOL.

I vote for #3. I like the idea of being stand-out despite the color choice over stand-out because of the color choice.

(Cough drops suppress coughing - good for chamber orchestra concerts!)
