Comments (24)I have what looks very much like the same thing. I spent some time with a family in Barcelona back in the 60's. They gave me this as a gift when I left. I can only tell you what it was used for when it was given to me. During the last evening and the last meal my host brought it out with red wine in it. He had pushed a round tooth pick in the small hole. He then lifted the vase above his head and poured the wine in a very small stream onto his forehead and made it run down the side of his face into his mouth. He then presented it to me to try. After many tries and getting red wine all over my shirt I did it also. Not sure if that is all they are used for. I never did ask. Just a wonderful memory that will last forever....See MoreAnyone recognize these fingerling potato leaves?
Comments (3)While there are visible differences in potato leaves, especially apparent when you are growing several varieties side by side, and blooms will vary from white to pink to purple, it is really hard to guess the variety by the leaf. I know from experience that purple colored tubers will have purple blooms and usually some darker purplish coloring on the leaves where white ones will not. I have also noticed that fingerlings tend to have smaller leaves than large baking spuds. I can look at my patch and feel confident guessing that this one is a fingerling, that one is not. This one should be a purple variety, that one not; without consulting my notes. But beyond that I don't know that you could tell the exact variety just looking at the leaves. Best bet is to wait until harvest, you will know for sure then. :)...See MoreA short guide to recognizing digitally altered images.
Comments (8)roselee - Yes! I've noticed it seems very common with roses, especially for blue roses. It is usually for "seeds" as well - which is already a bit of a red flag. Overall I have to say I've been pretty shocked by how often I come across extreme digital manipulation in the gardening marketplace. It never occurred to me that it would be an issue, but it's everywhere. That's why I finally decided to write up these tips, because it must be working or it wouldn't be so widespread....See More- last month
