Alive and well in the Garden State!!

Howdie Everyone!

We are in NJ now and LOVING it!!

The road to NJ was a long one....when I last posted the 2 realtors were in the throws of a pi$$ing contest over the time of the settlement, my guy wanted first thing in the morning but the buyers agent wanted late morning showing no concern at all that I had a walk thru and second settlement scheduled.

We all finally came together at 10:30 and whoa nellie was it slow!!

We actually missed our walk thru and was late to settlement but it once we got there, it went off without a hitch!

When we got to the house our moving truck was there waiting for us to move right in!!

I am sorry I didn't post sooner but as many of you already know I always seem to have computer issues in the late summer and this year was no different so we went out yesterday and bought a new desktop unit....its really nice to be on comcast although I have not picked and email addy yet so until I do I can still be reached at SalsaSue23@aol.com.

The house is great!

Keep in mind its a fixer upper but there really isn't much big stuff to do! The new fridge is terrific and I am getting used to the glass cooktop.

All my furniture fits nicely in the family room/man cave so I have to go get something for the living room.

The yard is a whole other issue!! Its far worse than I thought! The grass was thigh high the day we moved in and the mosquitoes were biting.

Once the lawn was cut we saw there is a lot of bare roots and overgrown weeds-its going to take a lot of TLC to get it looking good!!

And we have crickets....lots of crickets!!! They get into the family room thru the bilco doors and since the house was empty for the whole summer, have pretty much found a happy home. I have sprayed but I still see a cricket or 2 every day!!

I spend my days unpacking...I try to unpack a box or 2 every day as to not get to overwhelmed...so its coming along pretty well!

I have to run but I'll post more later!

Funny, just this morning I tool note that your last post had floated downscreen and was wondering how you're making out. Glad to hear the closings are finally behind you. What a saga! Good luck with the rest of your unpacking and the start of many projects to come.

What are your problem insects? Sticking with organic fertilizers usually is all you need to do to control the insects. What happens is once you stop killing the insects that are there with insecticides, you will see the return of birds, lizards, toads, and geckos. These are insect predators and will do quite a good job of controlling the bug population. If caterpillars are a problem, be sure you encourage paper wasps to live under your eaves. They fill each cell of their nest with a caterpillar so the more nests you have the fewer caterpillars there will be. Paper wasps will leave you alone if you leave them alone. You have to fight the urge to swing and swat at them.

Try a scratch test - gently scratch with a fingernail on the bark of a stem. If there is a green layer - the cambium layer - between the bark and the wood, then the branch is alive to that point. If there is only brown or grey to the wood, try further down the branch. If there is NO green all the way to the ground, if you check in scattered spots along the stems, then it is possible that the shrubs are dead. I wouldn't give up until next spring, though, as the roots may be alive, and the shrubs MAY sprout out from the roots, once it warms up. They might not, also. Sorry not to be more hopeful. Just out of curiosity, where did you buy the shrubs from? And did they offer a guarantee? You might want to give them a heads-up that there seems to be a problem, and see what sort of response you get.....

Kristi, I heard that! What???? Yes, I'm a Grandma 4x. Busy little bees, from nothing to 4! boy, girl, boy,??? It was really good to see you Kristi. Despite you telling me off, royally! :) It was a most informative lecture wasn't it. John, the new Agent has certainly shaken the Co-op up! Unbelievable! All very positive though. The computers certainy were rather strangers when I was there last. Now MG's can answer the queries from their home computers! Amazing and about time.... Today was the first time I've returned to the office in years! Kristi, weekend get-togethers just don't work for me, so I miss many great pleasures. During the week is much better for me, but not everyone can be free then either, I know. Not really gardening much right now, just trying to keep from being 'taken over'! Just been a busy time all round. I look forward to when our daughter & fam returns to the east coast. Very tired of tripping over to San Fran. Truth to tell, its not my favourite place in the world. The twists and turns of every hilly corner reminds my constitution of some horrible storms at sea. Just not my cup of tea! Beautiful place scenically and good wine spots; delightful shopping places with lots of little coffee cafe's too. Yes a nice visiting experience, all round. Just please, not those hills! Hello Cindee and Nancy. Cindee I still owe you some plants. Do you know, I've tried time and time again to get the P. Lady M. to root. Not once have I been successful! I've given up. But....I've some seeds of P.Edulis McCain (Logees.com) self fertilizing and fruiting after 1 year! I'm in the process of drying some seeds of P. Inspiration (fragrant and butterfly food) so they too should be ready in about a week. I've also some seeds, just ripened of Telosma Cordata (fragrance of a mix of roses and Violets) just ripened. So I could 'settle my dept' with some seeds? Yes?? :) Or cuttings: If you are in Ft. L. during the week(s), give me a call. Do you still have my number? How are you Nancy? I bet all your gardens are as full as mine right now! Thank heavens for the rain... that was a long dry spell, and being away my DH ...I think....only watered a couple of days before I returned... with the obvious results...dried up 'somethings' in pots! As Kristi mentioned, I have a new computer with none of the old info. Delighted to be able to use a decent machine again, but all info lost due to a crash on the last one. Hopefully this will last me a few years! If there is a get-together during the week, please do let me know. No I would not recommend them. First of all, GA is owned by the same company that owns Michigan Bulb. That's bad enough for starters, but they are way overpriced, and their catalog hype makes it seem as though the gardener who uses their stuff is guaranteed to be successful with zero problems. That's absolutely NOT the case, in any type of organic gardening. In fact, a greater tolerace to disease and imperfection must be internalized as one of the tenets of being organic. You can buy micronized sulpher at your local nursery much cheaper and in greater quantity than you can at GA, and it's the most effective organic garden fungicide. Plain old horticultural oil works just fine as a contact insecticide, and is far cheaper than any of the oil based cides sold at GA. Never use anything oil based anytime close to using something sulpher based, or you will fry your foliage big time. Plain old alfalfa and cottonseed meal sold at your local feed store along with manure is some of the best organic fertilizer available. All of this is far far cheaper than through GA, and you don't have to read their marketing. The best thing you can do to make organic practices successful with your roses is to thin the herd. That means shovelpruning those that are unsuited to growing this way in your climate. That may mean about 90% of the HT's and modern roses. Grow the ones that will stand the conditions and that you can stand a certain level of damage to them. Decide how leafless roses must be before you shovelprune them and stick with it. Leaving fungal magnets in your garden affects the whole garden.

Congratulations Susie! So glad to hear that after such a long and painful journey you've finally moved into your new home!

At last! You have had quite an adventure in house buying/selling. So glad all that is behind you now. Makes me a bit sad that you are on the other side of the river from me, though.

You are such a city girl. All of us suburbanites have loads of crickets, though not often in the house. The sound they make is one of my favorite sounds. Get used to it, kiddo, although they will soon end with the cooler weather.

So glad that you are home! Don't you love unpacking boxes, which have been pack for awhile, only to find Ânew to me' treasures! So glad that you are settling in.

Icky on the crickets...We have HUGE grasshoppers that eat all of everything if you don't stomp them. They don't get in the house but they are still a problem for landscaping.

Enjoy your new home! You deserve it!

Susie I am so happy to hear you have at last made it! Moving is grueling even under the best of circumstances, and now that that's behind you I hope you enjoy the process of settling in and getting things the way you want them.

Susie, I thought of you last night. I got home from my vacation, opened the door and there were four crickets waiting for me! They went madly hopping around and I couldn't stop laughing. Every time I went to stomp one, it hopped. I looked like I was doing the Mexican Hat Dance. Finally I just propped the door open and swept them out with a broom. I have rarely seen them in the house before.

Eh Gads this darn crickets!!
My dog is too dumb to go after them and the cat is too old!
I am trying to encourage the birds to come around by placing bowls of wild bird food around. Its my hope they will eat the crickets! We'll see!!

Drew is doing ok...trying to adjust to a whole new school envoirment and such. He is a pretty adaptable kids so I think he'll be ok. He doesn't mind taking the bus! It picks him up right at the corner so I can watch him from the lanai while I sit in my bathrobe with my coffee-much better than schlepping him to and fro!

Amy will not be coming home as much this year as her school is over an hour away and now that she is back into her school routine and dance routine she is pretty busy. YES she is working the Eagles games again this year so who knows which celebs she'll see this time!!

My commute is not all that bad...its about 35 minutes most days and a little less when I go in early or leave late...best to avoid the rush hours!!
I am considering switching stores...being that the stores in NJ are a different union, I would lose my seniority and pay if I transfer to a NJ store however there is a store in South Philly which is right off the closest bridge to me...it would take roughtly 15=20 minutes from here. Plus I am friends with the co manager there-in fact he already knows I was thinking about the transfer LOL!!

But I want to wait until Frank gets transferred to a NJ store at his night job-then I will switch Drew to a NJ store...he is the last in seniority now so he won't be losing anything plus he can ride his bike to work-something he could never think of doing in Philly!!

Can I just say I am LOVING my new kitchen!! Its an eat in kitchen LARGE and even with my dining table there is tons of room to groove. The lady who owned the house had the kitchen done about 3 years ago and while in the throws of the work, must have gotten sick and stopped her work and put the house up for sale. So while we looked at this house we noticed several large boxes in the garage maked Thomasville-the same maker of the kitchen cabinets. After we moved in we noticed the boxes are still there!! Seems she ordered more cabinets and for whatever reason just didn't install them. So once we get settled we are going to rip into these boxes and see what we can do with this FIND!!

I did find navy blue curtains to do with my color scheme so its coming together nicely.

I also found a nice living room group on Raymour and Flanigan. Its small and tailored and I think it will fit. The living room is only 11 ft wide so finding something nice and small is proving to be a challange.
Since we have the downstairs family room to kick back in the living room will now be a semi formal space. So I think a little creative planning will be in order!!
