Please help with shower layout

We would like a doorless shower as shown in the layout below. We can make the shower longer than 48" in the north/south direction. The size of the glass panel can also be changed. The two things that cannot change are the location of the tub and the east/west dimension of 48" along the southern wall.

Does this layout make sense?

Is the shower large enough to be doorless?

Where should the shower head go to minimize water outside of the shower?

Since indoor plumbing is typically not run on an exterior wall, I would put it on the right hand 29' wall facing the exterior wall.

The 29" wall is the one I've been considering. Just not sure if I'll be too close to the opening while showering which may result in more water splashing outside the shower as well as drafts.

If I locate the shower head on the 48" interior wall, maybe 18" east of the exterior wall, I'll be farther from the opening while showering. But, water will be pointed towards glass panel and opening.

It's not that hard to find narrower vanities (19-20") and that might help. I agree with weedyacres, maybe consider a pocket door for the bathroom door.... 31" clear for the toilet is just barely enough IMHO, next to a vanity. A couple more inches would feel much better. As far as tub or shower... how do you envision using it? For example, would it be the place to wash dogs or really dirty kids or soak houseplants? In that case, a tub might be more useful. if it's just an overflow, occasional use shower (or for resale), then a small shower would be fine. I am not sure it'd be necessary to go with what most people consider the minimum comfy shower size (3 x 4) if you'll rarely use it and you're trying to maximize the space... I guess what I am saying is: what are the priorities for this space?

With the indent on the wall area where the toilet is going if I center the tiles on that wall I'll end up with lots of less than 5 inch pieces for the project. First of all this whole "center the wall" thing is way overblown. It's a good place to START looking for your layout, but it's not a "must have" kind of thing. It's what's called a rule of thumb, as is not having any cuts less than 1/2 tile. Both are good rules, but as the saing goes, rules are made to be broken. However, there are also, in most cases, two ways to center the wall. You can either put a grout joint on the center of the wall, or the center of a tile. Either way is centered, and while one may give you an extraordinarily small piece, the other will give you a much more acceptable piece. Your best bet in any situation is to stand in the doorway of the room and look at the area and decide what would look good to you from there. Your first reaction won't steer you wrong.

while not specific to your request..... since you are in the framing stage I would definitely put in a pocket door into your water closet or toilet area and maybe into your large walk in closet as well. You can easily accommodate the kind that has 2 smaller doors that meet in the middle. Definitely do not want a water closet door opening into the shower door as currently designed. The newer designs for these doors are easy to install and very reliable, particularly the Johnson ones below. Also allows you to keep the water closet room area open when not in use for better air circulation without being in the way of the shower and or linen closet. My concern is aisle widths. The width between the island and the right hand side is 3'1" (37"). If this doesn't take into account counter you will be down to perhaps 34" aisle width when subtracting potential counter overhang from both sides. I'm assuming you have kids given the homework room and I can envision (may not happen - you know your routines better than me that's for sure) a traffic spot that may require traffic lights and that is the area that comes out of the homework room (and whatever other rooms are down the hall) and into the kitchen or through to the dining room, coming down the stairs and into the kitchen and also standing at the beverage center. The other area of concern is the seating at the top of the table. The aisle width is 4'5" but if someone is trying to sit down and then sitting down they need about 2-3' to do that. It will be tough to walk behind them and you won't beable to open the DW. There's just no breathing room or air in this space. The room can't take a deep breath. But not my space.

On a 4' square shower, I agree with lukkiirish. Not because of avoidance of the exterior walls, but because it gives you the best chance of not putting water outside the doorway. That said, I have a feeling that 4' might not be quite enough. You still might get water ricocheting off your body and out the door. One otther thing-- you're saying you want doorless. I hope you're not meaning curbless, as well. Not for a shower this small. If you were to move that wall that the door is on out one more foot, I'd say you could probably do both with no problem.

Below is the scaled drawing with the glass panel moved one foot farther to the north. My concern with this is that the opening to the shower will now be about 40" -- might get kind of drafty without a door. Any ideas on how to keep the size larger as you suggested, but avoid "too open" of a shower? I'm having a tough time figuring how to lay it all out with that space between the 40" opening and 28" opening. Any ideas would be greatly appreciated.

Regarding curbless: I initially wanted curbless, but I did some reading on the subject and came up with $500 trench drains and dropping the subfloor by cutting floor joists and it all sounded really expensive and complex. If it's not as bad as I believe it is, please let me know and I may reconsider.
