Please help me choose between two layouts
Comments (9)Thank you both for your comments! eaglemom100, there is enough room for the toilet if we move the door. The code is 30" and there would be that much space between the wall and the door molding. The toilet I will be using, a Toto, is 18" wide. There would be a window right next to it, and the door would be closed when anyone was using the toilet. I am thinking, though, that it might be strange to have a toilet behind the door. clarosietoo, I agree that Plan 2 gives more space for a vanity. weedyacres, storage is a real problem throughout our house. Our master bedroom (which does not have a master bath, by the way) is quite large, with a sunroom off of it, but it has only one standard closet, about 3' wide. There would not be privacy for the toilet, because when the door was closed, as it would be when anyone was using it, it would be open to the room....See MoreHelp Deciding Between Layouts
Comments (13)Thanks everyone for your thoughtful observations! mnerg - I agree with the landing space by the range. liriodendron - We considered a 30" range, but are pretty set on the 36" at this point. The dining room is through the hallway between where the fridge and range are. The hallway has a door to the powder room on one side, across from that a door to the laundry room which leads into the garage, and at the end of the hallway is the dining room. As to the 30" counters, I think they would work in the L layout and we will definitely consider bumping them out another 3 inches. rosie - I agree about the corner storage. It's been something that I've been trying to avoid in the new kitchen, but if we end up keeping it to gain a more workable layout, I'm ok with it. I do like your idea, but I don't know that we would want to invest the added expense in tearing into the walls if we can help it. my2sons - What's south of the kitchen on the other side of the fridge and dish drawers is the family room. And that has definitely been a consideration - what we would be looking at from the family room. As a two person only household, we spend the majority of our time in the kitchen and family room, so we want to make sure that both rooms work together. I appreciate your caution about the fridge/dishdrawers opening into each other, but I think because that's the widest part of the kitchen, and the fact that we're doing dishdrawers should (hopefully) make this a non-issue. flwrs_n_co - That was exactly how Buehl mapped it out when she suggested this layout in an earlier post, and I agree. It has a very good feel to it. brianadarnell - DH agrees with you. More welcome space, and able to gaze longingly at the new 36" range. :-) herbflavor - It's a good point about the crowdedness of the galley style. davidro1 - I think that your initial suggestion of galley style was really instrumental in getting us to look at our kitchen in a new light and being able to break away from the current layout that we have. I know that you didn't specifically advocate moving the range to the laundry wall - that decision was made in an effort to simplify the plumbing that we'll have to do. Our current gas line comes into the laundry room, so it will be extended from that room into the kitchen to accommodate the new range. So in the end, it's less complex for the range to not be on the long sink wall (for gas line and hood venting purposes.) Your point of having plumbing in both the laundry room and powder room is a great one and now we definitely want to fit in a small prep sink in that area of the room. Cutting down on uppers might also be a good idea for the small space. Thanks again to all - your input has been extremely valuable!...See MorePlease help me decide between these two pulls...
Comments (33)Could I trouble those of you with these lovely Revitalize pulls for pictures from a little further back, in context with surrounding cabinets? One of my issues is sizing; most of my drawers are 30 - 36" wide so I have to consider paying up for long ones or putting pairs on each drawer. I was sure I wanted Candler but the linked picture of them installed, and the feel in my hand, has caused me to re-evaluate. They seem "thick" looking, and when I used them at the model they were also less comfortable than Revitalize. When I opened drawers with Revitalize, my hand naturally fell so that my thumb was on the angled part - do you use them that way IRL? Here is a link that might be useful: not a fan of this look!...See MoreDeciding between 2 layouts - Please help
Comments (18)It doesn't sound like you're really up for the L format: to make an island kitchen seems to be your goal. What's with the bumpout on wall B-your original sink doesn't look bumped out? I'd keep a large single sink in the original location on wall B.You'll grow more counter on that run-use half of broom closet and charging station for shallow pantry[about 5feet].Fridge can go on wall C if you don't want it on wall B. Charging station can go in corner in dinette to the right of patio door. If you still need a small prep sink-put it on island -the large sink is removed from island. I would:get a microwave in large size with full features-it will have a keep warm setting[skip the warming drawer] I would probably not have the 2nd sink but make sure the primary sink is nice and adequate. I would not have the 2 pantries-the 5 foot shallow pantry borrowed from broom closet is plenty. With more counter now on wall B,and at most the small prep sink on island,I would shorten that long dimension to the island-it's all counter now[cooking surfaces are down on wall A] and looks super long-but you can leave it if you wish. there are ways to do L's in this kitchen-you could do it on wall c with the arm coming down into floorspace with a peninsula..or same from wall A-going up-or smaller L's from both wall A and C with a break in the middle for passage through. The island has it's perks but make it a free run for use and looks....See Moredietitian
