I have been getting that message also, a java update. I have been ignoring it since I am not too sure about it. I am thanking in advance and am very grateful for this forum and it's members.

Mine doesn't say it is Java although it could very well be. What it says is, 'Updates are ready for your computer. Click here to install these updates.'

The java update isn't as important as the Windows update. If it's the Windows update, you should update it immediately. You may need to reboot after updating.

That sounds like the Microsoft upgrade message for sp3, I have that everytime I start the computer but am waiting before I upgrade until the bugs are all out.

The yellow shield that notifies us of updates to install is safe to click on... It will bring up a screen showing the various updates to choose from. Boxes with check marks are the ones offered to you to be downloaded (uncheck the ones you don't want). Click download to install the ones you want OR you may click CANCEL and not do anything with them.

If you wish to defer installing Microsoft updates right click on the appropriate entry and select Hide. The update will no longer appear on any future reports. In the event in the future a user wishes to allow the update select Restore Hidden Updates.

I have that update thing also but when i try to update it says i need to insert the Cd so i don't know what it's all about.

I have not been able to hide SP3 I have tried every method that is normally used to hide updates but they seem to not apply with sp3, they do have an MS blocker you can get and install which will block it from showing up for several months.

If it is the actual windows update icon and show actual windows updates for you to update then yes you can do those. However there is a spyware that is showing up in the systray down there and when you put your mouse over it, it says you have updates and infections that is NOT something you want to click on it is the Antivirus 2008 infection, they want you to pay money to them, you do NOT want to do that, if you see that you need to get the free superantispyware progam install, update it select your C drive for it to do full scan on and then once done allow it to clean anything it finds. In fact if you do not have a current program on your pc to do scans for spyware ( different from virus scan) then you should definitely get it and use it.

if you prefer to make sure you are actually getting true windows updates go to Start> all programs> and up top you will see windows updates hit that it will take you to the windows update website once there it will scan your pc then ask which of 2 options you want, you want to choose Custom so that it only gives you the critical updates.
I would uncheck the option for sp3, not get that one now, but get the others, also it might have an option to get IE 7 if you currently have IE6 you might want to uncheck that one also if you want to stay with IE6.

When was the last time you did your updates on this pc?
What security programs are you running and are you keeping them updated?

For those getting the java update notice you do need to do that update for java that is a security update, you can go to Start> control panel> java double click to open the java panel then hit the update tab and you can choose to look for updates. It will find the update, install it for you, then you need to write down what is the version of the new one it just put on your system, then go to Control panel> add remove programs> scroll through looking for java entries, you want to delete the older java entries, you should only have that new one you wrote down showing in your add remove programs.

I just checked and I also have the yellow shield with an exclamation point. I clicked on it and it was for the SP3 update - which I'm not taking.
