Update drivers? Safe???

I have Windows 7, and have been getting the message to update my drivers. I'm so leery of doing any updates that I do not know what I can do safely. This is a copy of the first of instructions. It then goes to My PC Backup, and Driver Update utility. It has the McAfee icon, saying it's safe, but I need your OK that it is!

If the hardware items attached to your PC (printers, scanners, external drives, keyboard, mouse) all work fine, there's no reason to take a chance.

Best outcome - nothing's gained.

Worst outcome - it doesn't install properly, or your connected hardware doesn't work right, or some other hiccup happens.

I like to leave well enough alone and follow the adage to not try to fix something that isn't broken. I never update drivers.

I wouldn't worry about updating drivers either.

A bigger concern for me would probably be the mechanism by which I/you "... have been getting the message to update my drivers ...".

When/where do you get that message? Have you scanned for malware recently?

Despite the green WOT rating, the WOT user reviews tell a different story. WOT rating of driverupdate.net

Personally, I think they'd just love to stick their grubby hands into your bank account and withdraw $29.97/year.

Thanks everyone. Mikie - I will try that link soon. I sort of agree that if everything's fine, don't go borrowing trouble. But my laptop isn't quite fine - and I don't know what's wrong with it. The past month it's been weird. When I unplug it (to move it to another room), it just shuts down. The battery was staying at 87% all day yesterday - while plugged in. Then it sometimes takes many, many minutes to boot up after it's suddenly shut down because it was unplugged. Sometimes I have to reboot a few times til it functions properly. I updated and ran Avast, superantispyware,malwarebyte and spywareblaster. All were fine - so I don't think I'm infected. I sometimes keep a lot of tabs open at once(I'm embarassed to say how many - but since it's relevant - perhaps 2-3 dozen). I'm comparison shopping and keeping open the tabs for whatever I'm currently researching or shopping for. I know this taxes the resources. When I shut the computer down, I run ccleaner to get all that stuff cleared up. Lately it's done something else weird. Sometimes when I click to open something up in a new tab (Firefox - which was like version 5 - but they recently sprung 9 on my which I never authorized - Windows XP). So I click open a new tab. And the tabs just keep scrolling across the top. As I try to click on a particular tab, the tabs keep scrolling to the left. This happens even if only a dozen tabs are open. And this doesn't happen every time but has become frequent. I have to let it scroll for 5-20 seconds before the tabs stay still - and I can click on one. I have no idea what's going on. At first I thought I had too many tabs open - and overtaxed my system. But since it's happened with closer to 10-12 tabs (and no other programs open), I'm not sure that's the problem. Is it Firefox? My laptop? driver? Thanks. Lynn. PS damccoy - they wouldn't let me print out the page. It kept disappearing - bc. of course they want me to spend money for their program to update - they don't want to hand me the list to do it on my own.

Try holding down the 'Win' key, usually next to alt... then press R for Run. Or you can open one of the black command windows.. type in there works with most things that require the run line. Or you can open Taskmangers left applicationss tab... and choose New Task.. on bottom right. That will work for most things as the Run line. If I right click my lower left Start button, choose properties... then choose the Start Menu tab... then customize... I can add or remove the Run line from the pop up start menu.

ubuntu trying to update the drivers for cd rom

Yes it reads. I installed this version of ubuntu on it,and I can view a photo disc. Disk utility shows it but has a dash beside write cache. K3B shows it,but says error beside write. cat/proc/sys/dev/cdrom/info: drive name: sr0 drive speed: 52 drive # of slots: 1 Can close tray: 1 Can open tray: 1 Can lock tray: 1 Can change speed: 1 Can select disk: 0 Can read multisession: 1 Can read MCN: 1 Reports media changed: 1 Can play audio: 1 Can write CD-R: 0 Can write CD-RW: 0 Can read DVD: 0 Can write DVD-R: 0 Can write DVD-RAM: 0 Can read MRW: 1 Can write MRW: 1 Can write RAM: 1 no ndiswrapper I honestly don't know what I'm using that allows me to use the driver. Maybe I can't? How would I get a linux driver? I am up to date on all kernel updates as far as I know. I thought maybe I just needed to add something else like a destination for the file? Got it corrected. I had to delete the cashe on explorer/tools. I had already done that before but i had to be careful to then ask for one download and then immediately select use own browser. After that i could download one driver at a time.

The ONLY reason to update a driver is if something is not functioning the way it is supposed to. Then and ONLY then, you should go directly to the web site of that product and install the appropriate driver. DON'T rely on Microsoft or any third-party site to supply you with a driver for any reason and never pay for a driver update.

Gosh this again hurts. I agree with Snidely, leave well enough alone.

I agree with AZ's total post. Plain and simple reasoning and guidance.

When you say " I'm so leery of doing any updates," are you referring only to driver updates, or to other updates as well, like updates from Microsoft or for your antivirus software? If it is a broader issue for you than just drivers, then that's another discussion we need to have, because the answer is going to be much different.

I just got back to this......everything is fine now; I do the regular updates as I am notified. Again, thank you, all!
