Java Update ?

Dell XPS Studio 9000

Window7 64-bit (BTW, I'm loving all the Win7 features)

Firefox 3.6

I received an update notice for Java 6 Update 17. I checked and I had Java 6 Update 14 (64-bit) and a Java plug-in. (I know the Java 6 Update 14 was installed when I got the computer, but not sure when the plug-in was installed)

After the update, I now have a Java 6 Update 14 (64-bit) and Java 6 Update 17, but no Java Plug-in. Anyone know what the Java Plug-in might have been that the Update 17 replace? Am I safe removing update 14 since it say (64-bit)? Just checking so I don't screw up anything.

Remove the v14 and keep an eye open for a v18 announcement. There is already a 32-bit v18 version released.

I "did" uncheck that part and it went ahead and started installing Open Office anyway...there was no place to stop it, so I just shut my computer down with the button...I couldn't even shut it down from the start menu. I clicked on the icon finally and I had a choice to close it and I did that and I don't have that icon there anymore. I am using Java 6 and this was for Java 7

do you mean in add remove programs? you should only have the latest version located there if that is what you meant, having old versions is a huge risk to your security. Now the newest version will remove the previous version but you do have to remove all the other old versions manually. JavaRA is an excellent little tool that will do all the hard work for you. Download JavaRa and unzip it to your desktop. (at bottom of this post) * Double-click on JavaRa.exe to start the program. (Windows Vista users Right-click JavaRa.exe > Select Run as Administrator) * Click on Remove Older Versions to remove older versions of Java. Then download and install Java SE Runtime Environment (JRE) 6 Update 16. I tried to verify if my IE is 32 or 64 bit and this is what was listed for my version:

Version:8.0.7600.16383
Cipher Strength: 256-bit

Jean, the 32 or 64 bit refers to your operating system, not IE (your browser).

My system is 64-bit as stated in my OP.
I went to the link that exgm post and this was on the site:
If you are using:

* 32-bit Internet Explorer (IE), you need to download 32-bit Java (Verify browser)
* 64-bit IE, you need to download 64-bit Java (Verify browser)

Verify if you are using 32-bit or 64-bit IE browser.
Follow these steps to verify whether you are using 32-bit or 64-bit browser.
1. Launch Internet Explorer browser.
2. Click on the Help tab at the top.
3. Select About Internet Explorer which will bring up an information window.
4. If version of IE displays 64-bit Edition, then it is 64-bit IE, otherwise it is 32-bit browser.
  
  The older Update for Java states that it is for 64-bit but the update 17 doesn't.
I will just remove the Update 14.
