Java Update Security Warning

I just updated java to version 7; and uninstalled version 6 afterwards (I found out to do this by searching this forum for other java questions.)

Now, when I get on the internet, I keep getting this warning: "A website wants to open web content using this program on your computer."

Name: ...6)\Java\........\bin\ssvagent.exe

Publisher: Sun Microsystems, Inc.

Then it says Allow or DonÂt Allow.

What do I do? Allow or not? Thank you...

I was at the Sun java site yesterday, and I believe version 7 is a beta (test) version, so I did not update. I suggest you go back and get Java 6, update 7 and install it and remove whatever you downloaded previously.

What operating system are you using Is it Vista?

And what browser is it IE? (Internet explorer)

There have been some problems reported with Vista and IE about the warning I am trying to find a little more information about it and a solution.

Please answer the 2 questions above.

Back again to report. I double clicked on the coffee cup icon, the box that came up had tabs. General, Update, Java, Security and Advanced. I clicked on Update. It is set to notify me before install, there is a check mark next to check for updates automatically. When I clicked on the lower button to check for updates the msg read: You already have the latest Java (TM) Platform on this system. But the version is 6 Update 11 according to this info and what's in the add/remove section. I can't make sense of this. When I went to the Java site, there were so many different 6 Update 13 that I didn't do anything there. Should I just not worry about the strangeness of this whole matter, or should I be looking to get 6 Update 13 for my XP? Thank you. Sapphires

do you mean in add remove programs? you should only have the latest version located there if that is what you meant, having old versions is a huge risk to your security. Now the newest version will remove the previous version but you do have to remove all the other old versions manually. JavaRA is an excellent little tool that will do all the hard work for you. Download JavaRa and unzip it to your desktop. (at bottom of this post) * Double-click on JavaRa.exe to start the program. (Windows Vista users Right-click JavaRa.exe > Select Run as Administrator) * Click on Remove Older Versions to remove older versions of Java. Then download and install Java SE Runtime Environment (JRE) 6 Update 16. The message you are getting as to whether allow/disallow is coming from your firewall. It is working as designed, preventing applications from accessing the internet without your permission. You are getting that message because you just updated to a new version of Java...the firewall sees it as a new application.

I agree it sounds like it is the pop up alert from your firewall letting you know the program has changed my zonealarm does that every time a program is updated and I have to tell it to allow and check mark for it to remember next time.

Thanks, everyone. Those warnings make me nervous... To answer zep's questions - yes, it is Vista; and yes, it is Internet Explorer.

OK, so I think it is the firewall, then. So I will allow it; and I will tell it not to ask me again. I didn't allow it at first, so then I allowed it the second time (waited for my computer to blow up... ; ) ... but it didn't happen); but I didn't check on not to show again because I was afraid that if allowing it was not the thing to do, I wouldn't be able to see that pop-up again. If that makes sense.

If I have any problems with version 7, I'll let you guys know. I did notice that when I was downloading it, it took awhile to download some patches along with it.

I think it is vista providing the warning not the firewall.

Wouldn't the fire wall that you use pop up with the warning, someone help me... Because I'm not sure here..

What fire wall do you use? I'm trying to rule out the fire wall.

Spybot will send up a box asking to Allow or Not Allow. Zone Alarm does the same. There might be others. Dee should know if it is her Firewall.

I'm just using Windows firewall. I'm not sure what is warning me - Vista, or the firewall, to be honest. And I can't check it out again because I told it not to pop up anymore with that warning. I do notice something different since I upgraded to version 7 of Java.

The main difference is my hotmail page - it's much, much larger than the screen now, so my messages are cut in half, and I have to scroll over. I should probably change my resolution - but I have it set up now the way I like it; and the websites I go to (like this one) fit the whole screen (instead of just part of the screen).

Anyone else not liking the new Java, and switching back? Is it a bad idea to switch back?

That is the most current version of Java, not beta so you should keep it for security. Maybe I mis-spoke when I suggested that it was the firewall, I just followed my intuition on that one.
