HP notebooks

Does anyone have an HP nx6325 or a Compaq Presario V6000TX series? This is my first notebook and would greatly appreciate anyone's experience with either one. Thank you.

I have the HP 6119, not the same model, but part of the 6000 series. I really like it. I have had it since last October, so it has Windows XP Media Center Edition on it. According to the information I have, it could be upgraded to Windows Vista Premium. However, it has 1 GB or RAM, and I'd definitely upgrade to 2 GB if I ever decided to put Vista on it. I'm perfectly happy with XP, so I don't have any plans to do that as yet. If you have specific questions, I'll be happy to answer any that I can.

abreeze, in looking at the specs for that model, I notice that it has only a 128MB graphics card built-in, and only Vista Home basic is offered as an OS other than XP. I'd look for a model that has at least 256MB graphics so that it could run Vista Premium if you so choose. The 6000 series has many models that are capable of that, and if you watch for sales, you can get one at a really good price (under $700). I paid a little more than that for mine, but it was a new model at the time, and I've seen it since with a larger HDD than I have at a better price. I'd suggest you go to HP's online site and sort of "build" what you want and then with those specs in hand, go shopping at one of the big box stores for one that is very close to those specs. You'll make out much better money-wise. If you don't know what specs you need, do a search for the recommendations for Vista Premium in a notebook, and you should be able to come up with a model that suits your needs.

My gut reaction is that Verizon was too lazy or cheap to write the drivers for their product. As I read it, the Multi-WWAN driver is for devices that have wireless broadband hardware built-in. I'd download the HP Multi-WWAN driver for a similar mini (make sure you get the matching O/S). Either the driver is going to install or it's going to balk at the lack of necessary hardware. I'd bet that even if it balks, the drivers get installed anyway. If that doesn't work, I'd call Verizon and ask them to support their product. You're paid them for the device and continue to pay them for monthly access. HP Mini's are quite popular so you can't be the only person having this problem.

The Toshiba A135 received a Very Good rating from cnet. Cnet doesn't give very many $1000 affordable laptops that high of a rating. I recently bought the A135 2877, I believe is the model, the one with 2 gs of mem. (would recommend 2 gigs minimum for vista, from what I hear. It has a 180g hard drive, actually two seperate hard drives, a 100g plus an 80g. Great for backing up your system. With this much memory and hd space, you could collect a sizeable video and audio library (were talking hundreds of songs and movies). It runs Vista flawlessly. Yes, there are faster systems out there. I would have loved one with the Nvidia graphics card, which would give you a whopping 512m of shared graphics memory. The Intel that comes with the A135 has 256megs, acceptable. For about $1100 at costco online, I thinks it's one of the best deals out there. It was about $300 more than I wanted to spend on a laptop, but I'm just thinking where technology is going today, with streaming video, tv and music becomming more and more prevailant, before too long, anything less that 2 gigs of memory and a harddrive less than 100 gigs will probably be obsolete in the next couple years. I think this will be sufficient for our needs for some years to come. -- john

In some cases when a hard drive starts going, there will be a password prompt. With persistance in taking it out and putting it back, you might be able to get in once and salvage what files you need. Otherwise, the HDD is probably toast and what is there is gone

How old is this laptop and what OS does it have? It is more likely a setting or a hardware problem than a bad sound card. Another thing to try is press down hard near the ON switch and see if the sound comes on. If it does, then there is a short in the connection that governs the speakers and the ON switch. That's what my problem was, and it requires taking the laptop apart and replacing the connecting ribbon. There are some videos available on You Tube that show how to do this, but first you need to find out the cause of your problem.

Thanks, grandms... I, too, wish to stay with XP. The market, however, is flooded with Vista. I can only find XP online, not in any stores near me. The HP site indicates one model is available, but I called and spoke with a rep when the customization wouldn't go through. He told me they had nothing available in XP.

There are a handful of XPs on a few other sites, but the options are mostly confined to processor speed, hard drive, and RAM.

I am also looking at Lenovo models. I don't want Dell after reading all their problems with recording live audio. (I'm purchasing a notebook so that I can record live audio from a PA system through the line in port of an external sound card. The forums are full of people struggling with audio issues using Vista.)

Good luck, and I hope you find what you want. When I Googled the model you asked about, the HP site indicated that it was available with XP, but I guess they've changed that. Too bad that we are forced to accept things we don't want. That's why I purchased mine last fall rather than waiting.
