Just my experience, but my fax machine is on a line with a dsl filter and it has had no problems. My wife faxes things to a place where she does volunteer work and there is no problem with fax quality.

bob.. thanks, I did a search on the web and found some advice that the two are not compatible. I have sent fax since the DSL was added, and had no complaints. I use the fax for things that require something I have on paper, or require a signature. In the problem case the recipient wanted a fax of the associated driver license to compare signatures. They said the fax was not clear enough. I ended up taking a photo of the DL and attaching that to email, seems to have worked.

I usually ask if they can accept a scanned image as an email attachment. If they can't, I scan it and use a free fax service like faxzero.com. I'm sure there are others that can be found with a search. I used that one recently and it worked.

I wonder too what privacy/security one has using such a service, not to mention the security/privacy perils of using email.

A fax sent over a temporarily established dedicated telephone circuit is almost 100% secure.

I just fax straight from my computer.
If it can be scanned it can be faxed.
Just print as normal but choose the fax option to print with.
The fax wizard will pop up and walk you thru it.
You just need a dialup modem hooked up to a phone line.

Is it possible your fax problem is with the recieving machine?

PoohBear, my DSL provider, Embarq (Sprint) says if I connect my fax like a telephone, behind a filter, it should work fine.

I don't use the fax often, but I can testify that I sent two signed documents via fax last week and they were accepted. The fax that "failed" was to a Credit Union. I suppose their fax is "industrial strength" and running constantly. Could it have a problem, sure.

I have decided to carry on, but I will follow up on any fax sent to be sure it was received with acceptable quality. In fact I'll be in the office I sent to last week and will ask them what the quality looks like, I'll be handing in originals at that time, so I should remember.

Conclusion, until I get another bad fax transmission result.

I had the fax and my desk telephone in parallel on one DSL filter. I made a change so that the telephone line from the DSL filter connects to the "in" on the fax and run the "out" on the fax to my desk telephone. This is what the design calls for, and in a perfect world (i.e., phone on hook, infinite impedance in that direction, likewise for the fax) it wouldn't make a difference.
