Fax over IP - FOIP

I'm looking to drop the extra land line I use for my fax machine (multi-function printer w/ scan & fax capability) and replace it with a Fax over IP service. I only send about 3-5 faxes per month and receive about 3-5 wanted faxes plus about 20 SPAM faxes per month.

Online searches have turned up mostly advertising sites disguised as independent reviews...

Anyone have any recommendations for good, inexpensive FOIP service?

You may want to consider the option I chose when I wanted to get rid of paying for an extra phone line, the phone company offers a distinctive ring option you can keep your same fax phone number but it is assigned the distinctive ring mine is a double ring, you set your fax machine to answer only on distinctive ring which most fax machines can do. You pay a minimal fee for a distinctive ring charge, have a separate phone number for the fax but no longer have to pay for that extra phone line. You really only have the one line that line just has 2 numbers assigned to it.

Many people use this type of feature for the Kids line so the family knows if it is an adult call or a kids call.

I went that route many years ago and it works perfectly. All other phone features work with it like caller id and call waiting etc.

That's a great idea RavenCajun, but I don't think that would work with my U-Verse package, which is already maxed out on phone options. (I have two other land lines that I use for my home-based business, Hubby's, and home...)

Hello, since it was in 2002, I am wanting to know how your Lychee tree is doing? By the way my name is Angie. As of now I have 20 Lychee seedlings planted. At different intervals of course. After soaking them in water for 3 days, that includes changing the water daily. I did mine by keeping them wrapped up in a paper towel and keeping them moist. When they started sprouting I planted them. I did it that way so that I knew the roots started growing. I couldn't just plant them, due to the fact I wanted to make sure they started sprouting. I started mine in styrofoam cups. Yes I put holes for drainage. I made a makeshift greenhouse for them. It's working good for keeping it warm and moist in there. I still have 5 more I'm waiting to see if they start germinating. When your seedlings sprouts enough you replant it into a 3 gallon pot with drainage holes of course for all pots. The following year, transplant it into a 7 gallon pot. Again the following year a 15 gallon pot, then a 25 gallon pot after that. Then you'll get a 5 year break from all the yearly transplanting. They say after 5 years in the 25 gallon pot it should be ready to be planted in the ground. Just think, I have a total of 25 to do. I hope I helped a little. there are a lot of internet faxing options many are free some charge a fee if the size is large. FaxZero.com do a google search for "internet faxing" what type of internet connections are you using, what type of modem or router? which version of windows? Are you certain there is not a built in modem in your pc already? most have them and they are generally fax modems. You could run belarc advisor on your pc and get a list of what is on it. go to this link, in the tutorial box scroll to item 100 it gives you the directions to how to use fax in windows wizard. As an IP attorney, I'm going to chime in here with a link that anyone who is even THINKING about allowing their builder to redraw a copyrighted plan from off the so they can use it without a license should read... JeffinTx - This is not the kind of thing that most lay people would know about so I'm not knocking you. But your builder OUGHT TO have KNOWN better and it bothers me that he would have suggested this. You might want to ponder this question. If your builder is willing to steal the intellectual property of other to "save you a few dollars," what other kinds of corners will he cut in building your home to save HIMSELF money? Cell Phones vs Land Lines

I've opted to keep my landline. I have a houseful of kids and do not want to worry about them using my cell phone to make calls. Plus, I don't want their friends calling on my cell phone when I'm out and about and don't necessarily have the kids with me. Perhaps I'm in the minority here with kids still at home but I can't imagine not having a landline in that case. There are times my kids are at home when I'm not there, so how would they make a phone call? Plus, sometimes my mom babysits and she does not have a cell phone so she would have no way to call me or 911 if there was an emergency. I also live in an area where power frequently goes out, so I have a regular plug in phone (not cordless) to use when power goes out. I might reconsider once all of my kids either have their own cell phones or are no longer living at home. I also reserve giving out my cell phone number to select good friends/family/school - I don't like people having constant access to me when I'm not at home. If I'm not at home, chances are I don't want to be bothered with a phone call so I prefer they leave a message at home and let me call back when convenient. I suppose I'm weird like that but I don't like people calling me while I'm driving, while I'm out grocery shopping, etc.

never hurts to ask back when I ran into that same problem they were able to make some changes and made it work for me.

I did ask -- Once during the sales pitch process, and again during installation. They could only handle two phone numbers...

Thanks for your suggestion zep516, but at $16.95/month, that seems to be one of the more expensive FoIP solutions (most I'm seeing are $7-10/month). Do you have any reasons why eFAX is worth more?

Well, I've done more searching, and found several helpful review sites. I'd thought I'd share them here for anyone who's in the same situation:

online-fax.choosewhat.com/internet-fax-service-reviews (also quite good)

I've decided to go with eXtremeFax.com, which, according to the reviews, offers a very good plan for $3.99/month with an annual sign up ($7.99/mo otherwise). I'll post my own review within a few months
