Looks like Wendy is nearing the bridge

Dear sweet Wendy is not well.

Wendy was diagnosed with breast cancer around the holidays so she underwent surgery. The vet said he hoped he got everything.

She has not been herself lately and last week gave up eating. A quick trip to the vet determined her lymph nodes as swollen and she is in kidney failure.

We should get a call today to see if in fact her cancer has settled in the lymph nodes.

In the meantime we try to get her to take small nibbles of the low protien kibble. She can also eat some dry crackers but so far doesn't seem to want them.

I can get her to take small sips of water.

She doesn't seem to be in a lot of pain or at least she is not complaining if she is, true to her nature I suppose.

We will not let her linger. If todays news is bad then we will have her put down.

I look at it this way, we got 7 more months with her that we didn't think we would get. Most of which she was happy and content.

I am not at my own computer right now so I don't have any pics but if anyone still has the slide show that Gina made, her pics are on there.

I will keep you all posted.

Sorry Folks: I wish I can say that I have designed a new revolutionary form of dry creek bed, but unfortunately, this one is in the "work in process" stage. There will be a mix of gravel and rocks eventually with a transition, left to right, of tropical to desert plants. The dry stream is the low point of slopes to either side, so as the microsprayers water the plants above, the runoff will take care of the plants I plan to put at creekside. The plants I'm envisioning are riparian in their native habitat, so they can handle a drenching and go weeks with out water. These include things like papyrus, palm grass, heliconias in the rain forest, and more water tolerant succulents on the desert side. The two sides will be on two valves so one side will go a minimum of a month between waterings, while the rainforest will get sprayed a little over once a week. The area where the bridge is goes through a transition zone where I've planted things that are happy either way, like Dypsis decaryi Triangle Palm, bird of paradise Strelitzia reginae and sun loving bromeliads, like Aechmea sp. Thank you all so much. :) April, it's definitely not a butterfly bush. I've got 2 of those, and they are a lot "woodier" than the mystery plant. Frances, I water all my potted plants 2-3 times a day in this heat, and fertilize lightly at least once a week. I'm having a field day with the Japanese Beetles this year, believe me. When I make my rounds I always have a soapy dish in tow AND a spray bottle. Sorry to hear you're fighting with the deer. They ARE evil, as are rabbits. @aniakrystyna if you want a traditional look in a faucet, but hesitating about a bridge style, I suggest the Kohler Artifacts kitchen faucet. It is a traditional look, but with the convenience and functionality of a single-hole, single-handle faucet. I have it in polished chrome, and really like it. It comes in other finishes. Its spray function has 3 settings - regular spray, berry spray (gentle, for berries and other delicate foods), and sweep spray which is a fan shape to spray down a dish in one motion. merrybookwyrm, You still have to be pretty tough, independent and determined to live out there around Orr because it is just so remote. Even with modern-day vehicles, it can take police, firefighters and medics a long time to reach you out there in the boondocks even without flooding or road washouts which just compound an already difficult situation. Western Love County, including Orr, and the adjacent portions of Carter and Jefferson County were hit really hard by this last storm. They got a lot more rain and flooding out there than we had here in southcentral Love County. There's a point where you even stop having cell phone service once you get out there, and where the fire and police radios cut in and out and have so much static that they are pretty much unusable for communication. In this day and age, it is shocking to me that there's still areas that are not so remote, mileage-wise, but that still are far enough out there that communication is spotty. Carol, I love the sunshine and it helps the garden a lot, but the heat and heat index numbers kinda take the fun out of it. We gardeners and our gardens are going to be roasting hot this week which will help plant growth but make life miserable otherwise. I've been so busy with other things, or flooded out of the garden, that I am so far behind on harvesting and canning that it isn't even funny. Today I'm going to sort, wash and freeze about 10-15 gallons of tomatoes that I can use later on to make salsa. I just don't have time to make it this week. I've already got that many frozen, so they're really piling up and still there's tomatoes piled up on every flat surface in the house. I am more behind than usual. Partly it is because of the peppers. I have hot peppers, onions, garlic, tomatoes, etc. for making salsa, but the sweet peppers are so far behind it isn't even funny. If I picked every sweet bell that is even half-sized, I might not get enough for one batch of Annie's Salsa. I did hold the pepper plants in cups forever during the May flooding before finally getting them planted and they are way behind everything else. The jalapenos were quicker to set fruit and start making up for lost time but the sweet bells and poblano plants are just sitting there. Apparently 33+" of rain in the last 7 weeks does not impress them at all. I've been trying to just stay caught up on making plum jelly, but last week I didn't have time to make jelly so I just extracted the juice and froze it. I can make jelly any time, but I don't like the fact that I'm stockpiling everything in the freezer. I wanted to have all the plums finished before the peaches began to ripen, and we're only 2-3 days away from the first peach harvest (if I can keep the birds out of them, which seems like a losing battle). I'm hoping to pick a day later in the week, maybe on Wed or Thurs, where I block out any and every other thing and just focus on thawing that plum juice and making all the jelly. Oh, and I have more plums to harvest sometime today. It is cloudy and there's been rain (and flash-flooding) to our southeast. The last thing any part of this region needs today is more rain. Lake Texoma's rise has slowed dramatically in the last day, so I am not sure its crest will even match the record crest that happened around June 1st. The Red River is falling fast, and everyone here is relieved by that. I never got okra, cucumbers, winter squash or purple hull peas planted, and I need to do it now or not do it at all, but I'm so distracted by trying to deal with the tomato and fruit harvest that I don't know if I'll do it. I might wait and see how the watermelons and muskmelons I planted before last week's heavy rain/flooding do. If they don't survive or quickly become diseased in the waterlogged soil, I might not bother planting anything else. At least all the cracks in the ground healed up, though I am sure the silty ones on the surface will return soon. Dawn

Oh Susie, I am so sorry to hear such sad news. I am glad to hear she doesn't seem to be suffering, but it's hard just the same.

Hello everyone.

Wendy is still here with us.
The path lab is very backed up this week so her tests were not completed as of this morning.
I took off today for "other" reasons so I've been showering her with love and hugs and a few peices of roast chicken.
I got her outside so I gave her a good brushing-she seemed to LOVE that. My nieghbor helped me carry her back in.

I just feel like chatting...

Dear sweet Wendy is a full bred rottweiler.
Oh about 8 years ago it was a dreary snowy Friday afternoon. My kids and Katie all got out early so I thought it would be better to walk up to get them rather that drive. I liked to help the nuns shovel so I arrived early shovel in hand to help make a path so the kids could safely cross.
I noticed a VERY large dog milling about and was a little worried since the kids would be out soon so I did something you should NEVER do...I approached the dog mostly to look for a tag but also to feel out the temperment of the animal. She was only wearing a choke chain (ugh) and she was dirty...sweet but oh so dirty.

Some other parents began to arrive and cautioned me that I should leave the dog be.

In the chaos of dismissal I lost track of the dog and walked the kids home.

Not giving the dog another thought I went on with my day.

After awhile I went outside to shovel my now covered steps when what do I see sitting on my landing but the dirty dog from the school yard!! True story!!
She must have followed my scent!!

I brought her up onto my covered porch and tied her to the railing. I fed her and dried her off but thought better of bringing her into the house with our other dog Gretchen.

The storm broke and it was safe to drive so I loaded the dog into my truck and took her to the local SPCA to have her checked out. The docs there said she was about 11-14 month old but to this day I disagree...I say she was at least 3 years!
They scanned her for chips...no luck. They put her info into their data base and no one had reported her missing.
Yjey told me they would keep her until she was claimed and I said NO WAY! I left my contact info in case someone wanted to claim her and took her home.

I bathed her and groomed her and introduced her to Gretchen. It was great-they got along so well!!
Frank came home with a large crate so she could have her own safe space.

The next day we started to search for her owner.
I went door to door and made posters but after 2 weeks we got nothing.
Prop a good thing as we were all in love with her.

She was sweet and kind and such a good girl. After a month I called off the search and called her ours.

Wendy is one of a kind...a really wonderful part of our family. There will never be another quite like her.

The main reason I am home today is my DH...he cought a bug and is having severe vertigo. Poor guy!! I think his heart is breaking...I have 2 patients to take care of so work will have to wait.

Susie, I hope Wendy somehow makes a miraculous recovery. What a sweet story. My old dog Scruffy was a stray that followed my son home. We lived in West Philadelphia at the time -- near 48th and Baltimore Avenue. He was quite a sad sack, with a sore over his eye maybe from a fight. I took him to a vet, fed him, cleaned him up. He followed the kids everywhere. We had him for 12 years! I do think strays appreciate the love of a family more than most. I will keep my fingers crossed for Wendy.

Susie, enjoy, love and spoil Wendy while you still have with you. These may be your best memories of her. And yes, she followed you home because she knew in her heart that you would love her forever.

Its with a heavy heart I have to report that Wendy died yesterday at 10:30 am.

Amy had taken her to the animal hospital on Saturday morning so they could keep her and flush out her system.
I got down on the floor and held her head in my hands and told her I understood if she wanted to go to heaven. I felt the weight of her head in my hands-I just knew it would be the last time I saw her.

The proceedure went well and she even ate a bit but she started to breath heavily and after a few moments she was gone.

We now know she had tumors all over her inside...she even had a large tumor on her heart. It was a series of tumors on her spleen which had caused a slow rupture which was the cause of death.

There is such a different vibe in the house this morning.
I keep looking down at my feet and there is no Wendy...her safe spot was under the computer desk so I always tucked my feet under her while I surf.

The other dog Gretchen doesn't seem bothered at all...which is good...but the baby cat-baby blue walks around lost looking for his buddy. He was curled up on Wendys blanket this morning.

Since we are prob moving in the next year we will not be looking for a dog. Best to wait till we are settled.

Once I get my own computer back I will post pics of our girl!

Susie I'm so very sorry and know exactly how you must be feeling. When I lost my dog Goldie it took a while to become accustomed to not having her by my feet as I worked in the garden. Or sleeping beside me in her basket in the living room.

It's so sad when we lose our beloved pets.
The only comfort is that she is not suffering any more and you have some wonderful memories. Hugs.

I still miss the WonderWeiner and sometimes expect him to meet me at the door when I get home, so it's going to feel empty in your house for a while, I think.

You did your best for her Susie Q. And now she's not suffering any more. Now you just have to heal, which I know will be tough. Probably good that you are moving, a new routine might help. I'm thinking of you and so sorry for your loss!

A dear friend of mine lost her Rotty 3 years ago and had to put down another just last month. So sad. I'm sure Wendy will find the boys, Chase, and Shadow, good company.
