I don't think there are any gas ranges available with a self-clean feature, but I could be wrong.

Dacor make a great 48" range. I like the fact that it has 6 burners instead of 8. Because there are less burners, you have plenty of space for large pots over the burners. To have 8 burners seems overkill and then the pots are smashed together when next to eachother. If you consider the Dacor, don't be discouraged by those who have had problems with thier wall ovens, because those with the range ovens seem to have no problem. I don't remember how much they cost, but I think around $8,000

Yes, there are self-cleaning gas ovens. DCS has one but only in the 30" range. Capital has it in their Precision line - not sure about the 48" model but you could check.

I have been looking at quite a few 48" ranges, and I have come to like a lessor-known one quite a bit: Five Star Range. It can be had for $5,000 - $6,000 (I found the dual fuel 48" one at a Los Angeles store for $5,000). Five Star also makes an all gas range. I think that they used to manufacture ranges for other companies (such as Viking) and now they manufacture their own ranges.

I am a builder by occupation. I've seen and tested most of the 48" ranges out there. Five Star is made by Brown Stove Works in Tennessee. I'm not that impressed with them. I do like the Capital Precision all-gas ranges (on the 48" models, the large oven is self cleaning and has a rotisserie as well). But you can also get the same all-gas 48" range without self clean and the rotisserie and save a lot of money. Even the Capital Performance ranges are OK, but do not have self cleaning. The deal with self cleaning is that it heats up the oven cavity to a very high temperature (800 degrees) in order to do it's thing. I've never had a problem getting down on my knees with knee pads and using Easy-Off and some elbow grease. But some folks just need self-cleaning. Also, Capital's manufacturing plant is in Santa Fe Springs, a suburb of Los Angeles, so they're reasonably close. Good luck!

Vonzie- I have notice that you have posted many, many postings on the appliance board - it seems exclusively promoting the Capital Ranges. I am just wondering- are you somehow affiliated with the Capital company or are you just someone who enjoys promoting the Capital Ranges?

To the OP, while you are still in the planning stages, consider a design that will use double wall ovens and a rangetop. You will come in way under your budget, and it will fit your needs nicely. A rangetop (as opposed to a cooktop) will give you the look and feel of a pro-style range, and you can have that in a handy 36" size, and the wall ovens, which can be another brand) will be at a little distance for all the big holidays, especially important when you have a kitchen-ful of "helpers."

Vonzie is not a mole; he freely admits to knowing Rich from Capital. He's a fan. Just as I am (but I don't know Rich). I do own a Capital (only since last week) and I love it. There's a lot of people on this forum who tout one product or another. Lots of BlueStar fans out there and no one questions them.

To the OP, in addition to considering a 48" range, or a rangetop/cooktop with double ovens: we installed a 36" DCS AG range with 6 burners, plus a separate electric convection wall oven. The wall oven gives us the more even electric heating & self cleaning while providing some distance for multiple cooks. The range gives us a great big gas oven that can hold full sheet pans for the big crowd occasions, a powerful infrared broiler, & easy access to an oven if we want to finish or hold something from the rangetop.

Thanks for all the responses. We've re-worked the plan to allow space for wall oven(s). My GC really discouraged the 48" range due to the larger venting requirement which he said would add $$$ to the project. So now I'm considering 36" ranges/cooktops/rangetops etc. My preference (as far as looks go) would probably be a 36" pro-style range top and separate wall ovens.
I guess it is back to the drawing board!

In addition to considering double oven units, you might consider stacking a speedcooker/microwave (like the Advantium) or a steam oven over a conventional convection oven. I would not choose a double oven that has a built-in microwave oven as its top oven, however--if it dies you have an expensive repair or replacement.
