Always try to keep your software current, yes I would upgrade the software.

What is the total capacity of the hard drive? Windows needs about 20% free space on the drive to function correctly.

Why not get rid of some of the data and or programs you no longer use to free up space.. Take a look in add/remove programs remove old programs ect. Also >start> accessories> system tools from there do a disk clean up, and defrag.

And external drive is a nice addition and easy to set up through a simple usb connection.

I would consider just getting the free program open office it should do all you need and it is able to create and read MS word docs and most MS type files plus you can save the files you create with it as .doc files, it gives you a drop down options box on how you want to save the file you have created.

I will check into OpenOffice to see if it has what I need. I did call BestBuy and they have the cheaper Version 9 that I may want. I use the spreadsheet now and then.

open office has it all including spreadsheet and all free. I use it on all my linux computers and swap back and forth with my windows machines, no problems between the MS office and open office. Open office can be used on windows and linux both.

I downloaded open office, but it didn't recognize my wps files so I couldn't print. I tried to figure out how to convert them but had no luck.

So, bought Works 9 and it isn't compatible with my Windows XP Professional Version 5.1. So I am out $40 and still can't use my new printer.

You can try to salvage the documents by selecting and copying all the text in your document (CTRL + A for Select All and CTRL + C to copy) Now open a blank document in Open Office Word and press CTRL + V to paste the data in. Save it as a .doc and you should be able to print it.

for your hard drive that is running out of space, another option is to buy one large hard drive which fits the specs for your pc of course and take it to someone who has a program like Acronis True Image, which can make an image of the entire hard drive including your operating system and clone it, put it on the new hard drive, install the new hard drive in the pc, either leave the old hard drive in as a secondary back up or even better take it out put it in a portable hard drive enclosure and have it as a portable backup usb drive. Once everything has been cloned off of it and put on the new drive and working the old drive can be formatted and cleaned up.

Sure wish I had checked back in here and saved myself the $40.

I guess I will just do my recipe file one at a time so they can be alphabetized in a new file in OpenOffice. I have lots of recipes.

When I cleaned up and defragmented my hard drive I gained a lot of space! I have have 18 free GB. I should do that more often.

When you installed the new printer did you follow the instructions given by HP? They can be very specific and if you 'do your own thing' instead you can have a problem.

Are you saying until Pam gave you help you had only printed the sample page? Forget the scan as that comes from an external source and the sample page is in fact on the printer not your computer.

No, I printed two from my documents before I got the MSW is out of memory message. They were things I had copied and pasted to a word processor document from the internet. I tried to find the templates on works like Microsoft works recommend by typing " :\Program Files\Msworks\Template" under start - run- but I got the message couldn't find files.

I can print directly from the Internet now, everything seems to be working correctly except for MSW.

I have thought about removing the HP software and reinstalling but haven't done it yet. I think I just inserted the disk and followed the directions but may have missed something. Do you think that would be a good idea?

Yes, if all else has failed I would remove the program and start over. Most HP printers seem to require you to start your program install with the printer not even connected to the computer. At a given point you will be notified to connect and the computer tries to recognise the printer and the process moves on to completion.

Silly time now but you seem to be running out of options to try. Have you got a Works version created before the year 2000? If so did you install this patch? If not and you do not have it you can download it from here. It is the third option from the bottom. Seems foolish but we never know with these gadgets of ours.

I had an unsettling day with my HP yesterday while printing labels. The humidity was causing pages to stick together to get my rankled to begin with. Then the printer would not start the print job. Hmm, checked everything. Eventually I discovered my labels were wider than the allowable settings so a notice popped up advising me. But in an instant the "I am printing" notice popped up covering the first notice and the printer could not start till I acknowledged the error that I was unaware of LOL.

Well, I downloaded the patch and found that my version already has it. So reinstalled the HP, exactly but to no avail.

I still get the MSW is out of memory.

So, will just convert all my documents to OpenOffice and then uninstall the old MSWorks.
