Buy now or wait??

When in the remodeling process did you buy your appliances?

Sears has the Kenmore FD fridge that I want for $2000 instead of the usual $2500 right now. In addition if I buy 3 appliances I can get 20% off. That's a significant savings but we are only in the beginning stages and it could be 3-4 months before we could actually install them. My other appliance purchases from Sears would be the 30" induction cooktop and the Kenmore or Kitchen Aid dishwasher. I could get all three for well under $4000.

I would be able to use the fridge right away but not the cooktop and dishwasher. Does it seem too risky in terms of warrenty and such? Do you think that I'll find that kind of savings on the fridge to combine with the 20% off again in the next few months? I know the 20% off is common but I don't believe I've seen the fridge that low in addition.

Would you buy now or wait and why?

Can you buy now and delay delivery 6-8 weeks say? Also, sometimes you can get the warranty to start when things are installed, not delivered.

If they have been in containers since last January, I would pass. Bare roots aren't dug here yet, so if they are bare roots, they'd have to have been in cold storage since last November. I'd pass. In CA, if you can buy fresh bare roots in late November, that's terrific. But there is hot weather yet to come in CA. You don't want to be messing with bare roots when the temperatures top 100 degrees. :-) Jeri

The authors are now at work on a new book that focuses on whole grain and multi-grain breads. I got their first book from my public library and copied out the recipes that I thought I might want to try. I may still end up buying the first book, corrections and all. But I'm looking forward to their next book, too! Teresa

Prices in some areas are at or near what they were pre-bubble. I believe that general rules of thumb that were in place before housing rabies took hold of this country are still good measures. One, if you stay in the house at least 5-7 yrs it may make more sense to buy, depending on the local market. If you're moving around a lot, rent. Not only could we still be in a falling market, but moving and selling before that rarely makes sense. I believe most areas still have a ways to come down in price, the exception possibly being areas that never saw the wild price inflation. But even those areas could lose value, they just have less distance to go to make up for it when housing "recovers." I would not buy in an inflated area. Most of those prices are still WAY out of whack w/reality and w/incomes. They may come down slowly and painfully, or it may be fast, but they have to come down because people are unable to afford them and many (responsible) lenders have tightened up standards. Any lenders who'd still approve a loan for too much house is probably clearly a crook, and to be avoided. Second: Old rule of thumb on how much house you could afford was, never finance anything more than two or three times your annual income, and only about a quarter (to a third at most) of your income per month for a mortgage pmt or rent. Many variables including your down payment, debt you still owe other creditors, years til retirement, etc. But never let anyone tell you that buying some overpriced house that requires a toxic loan to get into, is ok just because someone will lend it to you. And never let anyone tell you housing only goes up. That was the industry's justification for telling buyers that a house is an investment instead of just a place to live. You have to live in a house a long time and sell in a favorable market for it to have been an investment and even then many people 'forget' all the money they paid out as a homeowner that they won't get back like maintenance, HOA dues, and so on.

If you decide to purchase now, schedule delivery for as far out as possible, then reschedule (due to construction delays).

If you are really sure those are the appliances you want, I'd purchase them now. If you wait, those appliances may not be in stock and could delay remodel. (When we remodeled, I/we did not want to be the cause of delays and so made sure fixtures/appliances were on site when needed by the G.C).

We purchased a range and dishwasher from Sears 3 months early because of sales/rebate + coupon and purchased the extended warranties for them. We had bought appliances through that sales clerk before and so at her suggestion, start date of extended warranties was date of installion.

We did not delay delivery because we had room for them in the garage...actually we were anxious and also wanted to be sure appliances weren't damaged.

Like others here, we didn't want to delay the remodel because our appliances weren't onboard. I knew which ones I wanted and where to get them cheapest if not on sale, and also what the delivery turn-around time was. Fastest would have been HD for what I wanted. However, we managed to order a lot less expensive through a sale. Though one took a week longer to arrive than expected (told 2 weeks, turned out to be 3), it didn't delay the remodel at all.

If I had it to do again, I would have ordered BEFORE the remodel began, though, to ensure that they'd be onboard when the GC needed them. As it turned out, my range was delivered the morning he was ready to install it!

Sears does have a sale like that every once in a while, but never when you need it, it seems. And the fridge deal might not come up again...I think you'd be OK to buy now. And see if there's an additional discount for using or applying for a Sears card. They don't always advertise that as loudly as they ought, but it's a frequent perk too.

And you'll still get it installed before the warranty is up--usually if stuff is going to break within the warranty period, it'll be soon after installation. You'd still want to delay starting the warranty as much as possible of course.

My appliance person told me to order the appliances when I order the cabinets and they would deliver them when I needed them.
