'Save image as' function broken. Please help!

This is my first post on this forum. Someone at the Quilting Forum suggested I ask for help here.

I have WinXP media edition and have been using FireFox as my browser for a long time.

When I want to save an image, I right-click on it and choose "Save image as", then a box pops up and I can tell the computer where to save the picture. So far, that happens as usual, but for the last day or two, nothing actually does get saved, no matter where I try to put it. Other right click functions, such as the "Scrapbook" add-on, still work.

I have even gone back and deleted a picture previously saved from the Internet and then asked to save it again as described above, and that function just doesn't work anymore.

Thinking it might be due to a recent automatic update of Windows (KB936357), I removed that, but still no good. Then I did a System Restore back to July 5. Still no good.

So I am wondering if it is just my computer, or if someone somewhere has decided to make it impossible to save *any* pictures at all to our computers. I know that some pictures are protected from being saved this way, but not all--or at least, they didn't used to be. Not only can I not capture GardenWeb pictures, it doesn't work for other sites, either.

Any help greatly appreciated.

It might be something as simple as deleting the things in your temporary internet files folder. Click Start/All programs/Accessories/System tools/Disk cleanup. Tick which items you want cleaned up then OK

Or you could install Crap Cleaner from the link below which does a much better job. Download the third choice, the slim version that does not have the Yahoo toolbar with it.

Biwako,I use Crap Cleaner all the time. Dont know if that will solve that particular problem but its a great program..

Whether the plant lives or dies depends on several things, but the most important are A) a root system that is viable and at least a fraction of the lower stem that hasn't been too badly damaged by frost and that has a still functional vascular system B) enough energy in reserve (stored in roots and cambium) to push a new flush of leaves. Normally, you would not want to cut a plant back in the winter, because the demand on energy reserves needed to push new foliage can easily leave the plant critically weakened and vulnerable to insects and disease, but in this case and since the foliage appears incapable of providing the plant any food (the plant's leaves are where its food comes from), there is no harm in cutting it back as hard as you see fit. Cutting it back now, will have no impact on its viability, but repotting it will. I would refrain from repotting at this point because repotting is an additional strain on the plant it really cannot afford. The advice to be very careful not to over-water is good. The soil should feel dry deep in the pot before you water again. Increasing the humidity in the room the plant is in so it's between 40-55% would be helpful once you see signs of new growth, but misting won't do anything for the plant. Check the plant carefully for pests - the grower might have tossed it due to an infestation of mites, mealybug, scale ..... If so, it will be important to bring the infestation under control asap. As a precautionary measure, I would flush the soil to make sure it does not contain a high level of soluble salts. If you DO decide to take that precaution, the additional precaution of making sure you remove as much of the residual water left in the soil after flushing should be taken. theaceofspades, Thanks very much for replying. That sounds better than letting the entire branch just die...but is there no way I can root the entire branch (as one giant cutting)? I was thinking maybe it could be brought indoors, put in a bucket of water...with something in the water for nutrients and then try the rooting thing where you make a cut, put a little stick in it and put rooting powder in the cut, then damp moss/plastic around it (haven't done it but read about it) - which I know is meant to be done when the branch is still attached to the tree, THEN cut it off after it roots but maybe in this case if the branch is getting water with nutrients in it it would stay alive and root inside the moss/plastic...which would be a bit up the branch from the end that is in the water? :/ :`( *Sigh*

To post photos, you will need to join (also called signing up) for free a service like photobucket.com so the pictures are always accessible. When you upload the pictures into photobucket.com, you need to get the photobucket address where the pictures are stored so you can use them here in GardenWeb. This photobucket address looks like a long folder addresss in your PC, except it does not start with "C:" but something with the word photobucket.com. There are security settings in photobucket; make sure the settings are set to public or only you will be allowed to see the pictures and we will be blocked. Once you puload the pictures and get their addresses, you need to post a message in here -as usual- and, to keep things simple, type the URL address or addresses in this part of the message like so: http://i150.photobucket.com/albums/s111/llluch/100_4191.jpg Other website that some people use are Yahoo, Google, etc. They work in the same way. You take digital pictures and save the pictures in your PC. You upload the pictures from your PC to the website that you join, get the folder where address where they store your pictures and paste the address in here.

The clues that the images appear smaller and you can no longer save them makes me think you've somehow landed on a Houzz URL instead of a Gardenweb URL. Does it say Gardenweb or Houzz in the address bar? Testing with the image posted above... I'm sorry for not answering sooner; had to go away over the weekend.
First, let me thank the two of you for introducing me to CCleaner. I downloaded it and expect to find it useful. I'll explain what I did in detail, just in case anyone else ever has the same problem.

After getting back last night, I was successful in saving images in IE, but FireFox was still no good. Figuring it was something wrong with FF, I found a disturbing entry in FF's Tools>Error Console, calling a certain path in the computer "Not well-formed," but there was no explanation of how to deal with it. Removing FireFox via the Control Panel and reinstalling it did no good, nor did disabling all my add-ons and deleting temp files and cache.

In the end, getting desperate, I backed up the Bookmarks and Scrapbook folders in my FF Profile, then I went to C:\Documents and Settings\[my user name]\Application Data\Mozilla, and deleted the entire Mozilla folder so as to force the new FF install to create a new one.

This time, the new FF--though all my Bookmarks, Scrapbook add-on entries, and all the other add-ons I used to have were gone--worked right, and I was able to capture pictures again.

I re-downloaded all the extension add-ons I had had before, and now everything is fine. At first, of course, my Bookmarks toolbar was gone, and I use it constantly, so that was a bit scary, but after moving the backup folder from the CD to my FF Profile folder, I got the toolbar back, and I was able to do the same thing for all my Scrapbook entries.

If anyone else tries this, be sure to make a backup of your Bookmarks and Scrapbook (if you have that add-on) and also make a list of your add-ons and be sure you have a record of all the passwords FireFox has been remembering for you.
