quick question for hospital patient

Can I send flowers to someone who has just had a double lung transplant or is that a huge no-no? The last thing I want to do is to compromise his new lungs.

No flowers in the ICU. My cousins DGD has a double lung transplant TWICE I didnÂt send flowers just contributed to a fund to keep the family going when her mom was off work to stay with her. ItÂs been over a year now since the last one and she is doing great taking some college classes and even working part time.

Best wishes to the family for a good recovery.

It depends on the VA hospital. The one in Boise ID seems to be great. My brother in law was in it before he passed away with Huntington's Disease. We did go and see him several time and he (and the hospital) were always very clean, room excellent, personal just great This was several years ago. Friend taken to VA hospital in AZ near Cottonwood, treated so bad, discharged to crappy nursing home in Kingman AZ, lasted only few weeks. Not sure why. Another BIL was in VA hospital in Tuscon and he got good service, but he would not cooperate with either Dr/s or staff etc. Got out and really caused the family problems. Because of staffing cuts, money cuts, many of the VA hospitals are just not as good as they use to be. It is like dealing with a HMO , you take charge, you make the decisions and stand tough.DO NOT let them decide what Dr. There is always someone above and they will do anything to just medicate the person to """make""" the problem and people go away. Yes I have seen this done in some VA hospitals. Who ever goes with FIL, take a notebook, write everything down, names, titles, times, attitude, etc. If necessary record conversations. Has he had a complete medical work? If not, make sure he does. Just keep pushing. Sorry to be so adamant, but if we do not stand up for the veterans who will.

Thanks for the heads up, Donna. This is a first and I just finished backing up everything. Thanks to Ravencajun the on-line storage site was perfect. I just dread trying to put all those files and folders back together. I should have set up folders first but didn't think to do that so all the zillions of files are mixed. Live & Learn! Kudzu9, you are right. Although I paid for unlimited storage, the photos were smaller. I had checked to upload at high resolution, 2mg file but they were not the true size. I believe the A-Drive uploads were full size. I'm sitting here picking through Windows Explorer making sure I didn't miss anything. I was able to burn the drivers on CD's on my husbands laptop. So far, so good. This is the best forum on Garden Web. I have received so much help over the years I'm beginning to feel like a 'pro'...not quite but this should be fun. Thanks everyone again. Jane

it is taking a big risk, the one safe way she could use it would be by using a linux live cd in the cd drive and boot the laptop from that, then she would be accessing the net via the linux cd and not her hard drive so her hard drive and all info on it would be untouched. There is no need to install anything simply one of the free versions of linux that has the live cd would work, just choose to boot from the cd and she is good to go, she would be using the firefox browser that is on the live cd. Very much like sandboxing. the linux live cd can be downloaded as an iso and burned as such to CD or DVD and used so it is free. Another quick way to get one of the cd's is any magazine store that sells linux magazines will usually have a free cd included in them and most of the time it is one of the live cd versions of linux like ubuntu or mint etc, there are many distros. I always have a linux live cd with me when I travel, many banks are now recommending this method for transactions online to banking sites

I don't understand this at all, and frankly would refuse to help out my neighbors if our hospital had this stupid policy. What if you come by taxi? Does the cab driver have to stay? it makes no sense at all, and I would not do it. I can understand if there's a special reason for the colonoscopy and it's an immediate family member to be there in case it's bad news, but for a routine test? Do these hospitals make you wait if you drive someone for x-rays or an emg or a cat scan? This is nuts. ETA For my first MRI they told me to take a valium beforehand and have someone drive me, but he sure as heck didn't have to wait around.

Jo, I'd think about sending a card to let them know you're thinking of them and then sending some flowers to his house when he goes home.

I know when my mother was in the hospital, there wasn't a lot of space for flowers at the hospital nd really she just wasn't that into them at the time.... sleeping a lot etc.

But she sure loved the ones from a friend that were waiting for her at her room in assisted living when she was released!

As has been mentioned, I'd probably skip the flowers for now.

Right now a card would be nice, maybe with an IOU for supper or baked goods or errand running at such time as he is out of the hospital and recovering?

I had a hospital stay in ICU a couple of times. I think any flowers that were sent were donated (by my DH) to the adolescent psych unit where they would be enjoyed by the children.

Here flowers are not allowed in the ICU or on some Oncology floors :-(

Flowers just get in the way in the ICU. It's all business in there, although I have seen some. They usually end up shoved somewhere out of the way.

Send flowers when he is moved to a regular room.

My sister had a bilateral lung transplant. As others have said there are no flowers allowed in the ICU. Also, before her lung transplant she was very sensitive to scents and smells, so she would not have appreciated them. Breathing on her own felt so weird she didn't want anything that would compromise/interfer with it.
She was really not in the hospital very long. Because after the transplant you are severely compromised flowers might not ever be a good idea. One person sent her cookies in the shapes of fruit and flowers which were really cute
