Using Laptop in Hospital Question

My sister is in the hospital. She has her laptop up there with her...but is a bit paranoid about using the hospitals wifi. She has all her CC information,etc. on her computer.

Anything she should know or do before she goes online??

I would be hesitant about using it with a public wifi too. Just saying.......

I used mine the last 2 times I was in the hospital with no problems.

Just curious does the hotel tell you that when you check in? We mostly stay at red roof a lot and I watch Netflix on my tablet or laptop all the time at their hotel with wifi and other hotels and never ran across that situation. Netflix is streaming only so you can't download from them to watch off line. Someone else will help you with downloading as I stream all my movies while traveling and staying in hotels. Mary

I used to take the battery out of my old toshiba and it lasted at least 4 yrs before I broke the laptop. I'd store it at slightly less than full charge when removed from the computer. New toshiba I replaced that broken laptop with the instructions say leave the battery inplace all the time as it only charges when its capacity is something like below 94% of charge. Its really rare that I see its charging light glowing. It's a year and a half old and still always shows and acts like it has full capacity as when new. I don't often use it on battery but when I do I try to let it run untill it warns me its low. The battery placement in the new laptop is located in a very cool to touch section of the laptop so heat certainly shouldn't be an issue degrading it by leaving it plugged in & the lith-ion type batteries do not self discharge and leak down as quickly as some types will. eBay usually has some new replacements at auction that if you inquire, usually they will have a date code that's about a year old but certainly less moneys.

Doing a power cycle should sort that. 1) Make sure the touch pad is enabled (still not working? Go to step 2) 2) Turn off the computer 3) Unplug the power cord from outlet or laptop 4) Remove the battery 5) Press and hold the power ON button for 30 seconds 6) Re-insert battery 7) Plug in power cord 8) Turn on the computer After doing the above is it working? Thank you for your replies. Here's the scoop. I was working full time & went out on short term disability on 1/27/16. On 8/1/16 my short term disability ran out & I went on long term disability thru my employer. On 8/1/16 my employer fired me & said they can't hold my job anymore. BUT I still keep my long term disability. The long term disability company has a 3rd party vendor to assist in getting social security disability filed & approved as once social security disability starts paying that will save the long term disability company money. So this 3rd party company has an 85% success rate getting people on social security disability the first time because no mistakes are made & they also have attorneys on hand if necessary. My current status is on long term disability waiting for social security disability to approve me. But it's still a fixed income & I can show the hospital my approval letters if necessary. I'm not on Medicaid. My disability check is $20 more than their maximum allowance so I don't qualify. Fortunately I have COBRA insurance. But here's the blessing in disguise. For the first year on COBRA my employer is still paying their percentage & I pay the same as if I was an employee which is $60 a month. That price only lasts for a year and then the COBRA goes to $599 a month. I've looked at the Obama coverage and the premium for a good plan I need is $700 a month. So I'll have worries next year. But for now I'm enjoying my discounted 12 months of COBRA.

it is taking a big risk, the one safe way she could use it would be by using a linux live cd in the cd drive and boot the laptop from that, then she would be accessing the net via the linux cd and not her hard drive so her hard drive and all info on it would be untouched. There is no need to install anything simply one of the free versions of linux that has the live cd would work, just choose to boot from the cd and she is good to go, she would be using the firefox browser that is on the live cd.

Very much like sandboxing.

the linux live cd can be downloaded as an iso and burned as such to CD or DVD and used so it is free.
Another quick way to get one of the cd's is any magazine store that sells linux magazines will usually have a free cd included in them and most of the time it is one of the live cd versions of linux like ubuntu or mint etc, there are many distros.

I always have a linux live cd with me when I travel, many banks are now recommending this method for transactions online to banking sites

As long as her personal info is password protected under a different password than her one for her computer or social sites she will be fine.

Sites like credit cards and banking are encrypted and secure when you are not logged in.

Just have her stay on social sites and general email and she will be fine.

Never use the same password everywhere.

When I would stay the night with my sister at the hospital I used their Wifi. I picked up a password and username in reception. I don't do banking on line or have any real personal info on my computer though.

The concerns expressed so far are about uing the wifi. My first concern would be theft. If the computer is stolen by anyone with even mediocre knowledge could have access to a lot of info.

Cynic brings up a very good point. Computers, especially laptops have a way of "magically" disappearing from hospitals. Leave the room to go for a walk, go for a test, go to sleep and anyone can come in and "lift" it. Hospitals are not responsible for personal belongings. Unless a visitor brings it in and takes it back home when they leave you do take your chances.
