Why not build your own niche? our guy just nailed 2x4's between the studs and then made the walls of the niche out of cement board. I waterproofed it myself. I didn't use kerdi, but I think that would probably be best. I had a hard time finding a place that would sell me a small bit of kerdi, but you may be able to get some.

That's the Kerdi membrane? I will try and see if there is anywhere that would sell me a small amount. I'm seriously doubting it though. What else can one use to waterproof?

Yes, the kerdi membrane.

I used Laticrete's Watertight and painted that on, then you apply a fabric strip on the corners then another coat of Laticrete on top. Let it dry and then do another coat. I don't know what the fabric strip is called they sold it to me at the tile store. I think Bill V. called it an antifracture.

Laticrete's watertight, their 9235, Custom's Redgard, Hydroment's Ultraset-- any of them will work.

We used the plain inexpensive Lenape ceramic corner shelves, two placed one above the other. They worked just beautifully, held a surprising amount of stuff (I could put three 1-quart bottles of soap/shampoo/etc. on one shelf, with room for toothbrush, toothpaste and razor) and I thought they looked very nice. Were I to do it again I'd put a third just for grins, because threes look nicer than twos IMO. They were only about $15 apiece at HD. Daltile/American Olean makes similar ones for about the same price but I thought they were "clunkier" looking than the Lenape shelves.

I'm feeling like I'm missing out because I'm not getting a built in shower niche. I just can't imagine putting soapy bottles directly on limestone without staining it. Does that sound crazy? From what I've read limestone and soap scum do not work well together.
Below is a link to what I'm installing. You have to scroll down to the "soap dish and vanity shelf". It's the wider one. I'm only going to put soap and bubble bath there. My shampoo bottles will be kept in my vanity.

That looks really great Donna. I like the look of the recessed niches, but wonder about soap scum and what it will do to the grout. Your idea seems to be a really cool alternative.

I put Ginger Baskets in all my showers and have been very happy with them. I do put the soap on one of those plastic thingys as that is easier to clean then the wire but the corner baskets hold a ton. I am sure that someone makes them cheaper.
